Hello everyone... I'm new to the forum. I'm not a professional mechanic or even close but I love tools and appreciate great quality. I prefer US made tools as most on this forum probably do, which leads me to my first post. Earlier today, I was using a brand new SK 5/16 12 point socket to install hex head masonry screws to mount a security cabinet. All was well for the first couple minutes and then I started slipping. At first I thought it was me so I made sure the socket was firmly seated on the bolt. Didn't make a difference and the bolt head was intact. So I inspected the socket and to my great disappointment it had stripped out. What's up with SK? So I used my trusty Craftsman USA 6 point set to finish the job. Recently I had seriously considered ordering the SK 48 piece 1/4 socket set but now I'm not so sure. I don't know when this particular SK socket in question was actually made. I've had it for a couple years but never used it. So it wasn't worn or damaged. All my other SK tools seem to be fine but this has really put a bad taste in my mouth... Especially when I've cranked the hell out of some Gearwrench tools and never had a problem! Ugh... Has China taken over the tool scene? Maybe I just need to gradually replace stuff with Snap-On. I can't afford to dump $30,000.00 in all Snap-On tools but all I hear is praise for them - never really heard any complaints. Anyway, sorry for being hyperverbal... I know it's a small matter but it makes me wonder about the big picture with SK and their quality. Ok, I'm done. Any feedback is definitely welcome!

You wouldn't happen to have a photograph of the offending socket would you? Also, have you contacred SK about this? I've been in touch with their customer service people several times and it has always been a pleasant experience.

sounds like maybe a bad one got out, this is why they have customer warranty.
I am always skeptical of people who on their first post they are complaining about a particular brand of tool. I always think "TROLL"

I'm sorry to have struck a nerve and I mean that sincerely. I'm not a troll - I promise and I didn't join the forum just to complain. I just have been reading this forum for a while without being a member and there's quite a bit of knowledge here. Just wanted to know if SK had a bad run or not at some time. I haven't contacted SK because it just happened today in the late evening and then I had to get in to dad mode once my son got home. I plan on contacting them tomorrow and I thank you all for posting feedback.

Please let us know how it turns out. My guess is that you'll be pleased with their response.

12 pt. sockets **** for the most part. probably a poor choice to begin with. were you turning it by hand or with an impact? hardened concrete screws are tough on any socket. I would have used an impact socket myself...but I bet S-K makes it right.

Where did you buy the brand new 5/16 12 point? Did you contact the vendor? If you need a warranty replacement? Go here, and we'll take care of you.

Agreed all the way around! I've only had to contact SK once but their customer service was great....
