Welcome. I am a fan of sk. A lot of guys here will now post about their bad warranty service. If you are a weekend wrencher and not a pro the sk will last forever.

I've got both and prefer SK's impacts. I never checked but IR sockets appear to be Taiwan made if that is a concern. I just never got past the shine or the printed markings on them. The SK sockets are black oxide with a good stamped size on the socket in addition to the printed size.

I'm sure either will be fine. My preference would be the made in USA tool.

If you're open to other manufactures, dont overlook Gray Pneumatic. Their bread and butter is impact sockets. I recently got some and from what I can tell so far they are going to be excellent.

Here's my thread on my recent purchase of 1/4" and 3/8" impact sockets...

On a side note, my IR2101K came with a small set of IR impact sockets and they have a very nice fit and finish to them...

The website makes me nervous. Stick with a reputable one...Amazon, tooltopia, etc.

IR sockets used to be Genius which are damn fine sockets, I bought a set back in 98 from northern and they were Genius brand, But in IR packaging I still have them and I have never broke one, I used them on heavy diesel repair for 12yrs still have them and use them daily, look on amazon for Genius if you want a good socket at a good price

First, if you're going pneumatic, think very seriously about going to 1/2 inch. Much more power and a bigger choice of sockets.

Last, look at Chicago Pneumatics for your sockets. I've been using them for years. Great prices and excellent quality.

Nothing wrong with IR sockets. I have a small set, used them hard and never had a problem. Go with what ever sells in your area in case you need warranty. Sunex impacts are another good brand.

Look to be similar if not the same as Matco. Tend to doubt they're made by Snap-On since i believe Lowes main supplier is Danaher. Very good deal in my opinion.

GP or Sunex are definetly the best bargains for large sets. Both brands and SK can be found on tooltopia.com if you're looking to purchase via the web.

My only worry with SK is they would appear to have one foot in the grave. Though they're just impact sockets so if you break one say, 5 years from now, its not exactly the end of the world either.

Also SK deep impacts use to have a stop built into the socket which could cause problems with some fasteners. Not sure if they're still doing that but i saw it as a negative.

They're not Matco, they are JH Williams. These are old stock but still a good deal for US made impact sockets.

I used SK 1/2 drive impact sockets professionally for years without issue. As long as it's not a wobble or a thin wall, I don't think you'll have any issues with a medium quality brand. I've used GP as well. I would try and get as much as you can in 1/2 drive if you haven't already.
One thing I've figured out....
Matco wobble sockets > all others
SK G Pro wratcheting wrenches > all others
Ingersoll Ti impacts > all others

Skip SK, in the event you do break one you man never get a warranty replacement.

Have you had any problems getting a SK product warrantied? I haven't yet because they rarely break. When they do, I will either find a local supplier to replace them or pay the cash and send them back to SK.

When you consider that a set of SK impacts is about 1/4 the cost of my Snap-on set, I can afford a LOT of "five dollar" replacements. Just how often do you see anyone break an impact? Yeh, me too..... I think I have seen maybe 5 broken in the past 10 years that were not cheap chinese ****.

Haven't broken an impact socket, but I got some defective punches from them. I'm 6 or 7 months out on a replacement and they don't even have a timeline to get me one.

Might as well get harbor frieght tools if the warranty on "good" tools is meaningless.
