My previous garage had a wall of pegboard and I loved it, but you need proper size hooks or ways to fasten certain versions to keep them from pulling out easily. My new garage has one wall covered with panels (Gladiator) and a 4 x 8 section on another wall and a 4 x 4 section above one bench. It is a finished garage, so I did not really want peg board everywhere. However, I have a 60 inch rolling toolbox/bench with pegboard and a small rolling work station with pegboard. That pegboard allows me to hang basic wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, etc. that I use all the time. I like having both pegboard and the slat walls now. One nice thing about the pegboard on the rolling benches, using the little black retainers does work on some types of pegs on the front just like on the walls, but after arranging my pegs I rolled the benches around and use small zip ties or the small black peg retainers on the back and was able to tie down more pegs than I could have otherwise. You could probably do the same with pegboard on a wall by putting some pegs on the board before attaching it and securing them from behind where possible.
