Slat Wall or Peg Board?

I am going back and forth on whether to use slat wall or peg board to hang tools in my shop. Slat Wall is more attractive IMO and appears to be more durable, but Peg Board seems to have more accessories/hooks available, which tend to be cheaper than Slat Wall accessories, and a sheet of Peg Board is about half the cost of a sheet of Slat Wall.

What would you recommend? Thanks

I have a small area (3'x6') that I'm thinking of using peg board. My thought is if it's rather small area then go with peg board, whereas a much larger space, use the other.

How's that for sitting on the fence?

Neither, French Cleat wall. Stronger, possibly cheaper, and if a wood worker (even a beginner one) much more versatile. I personally hate standard pegboard, always warps, hooks only work for specific items, ect. The steel square hole panels are better but costly.

I used slat wall in my attached garage. I'm sure you can buy from these folks and have item shipped...but they're local to me. There's no shortage or baskets, bins, shelves, hooks....

I have found the slat wall to be very strong and versatile.

Never, ever been a pegboard fan- it’s just a mess! Plus, not one to “show off tools”- they stay secure in tool boxes, chests, cabinets.

Slat wall panels are hit or miss when it comes to mounting/weight capacity. I would much prefer a “hybrid” of French cleat wall (like a slat wall- but French cleats).

Having used both at one time or another, my vote is neither.

Cabinets and tool boxes or using french cleats are better storage solutions.

I have 3 walls in my shop from 3' up covered with pegboard. I love it! Use the heavy duty stuff and buy the good hooks. There are many different types of hangers and I like having many of my tools on the walls and then several workbenches all on casters. My shop is 26x38 and the only use is as a shop so at night the projects can stay right where they are.

Here is an older picture of my commercial slatwall on one wall before I finished it. It has aluminum in each of the slats. That's Smartsiding on the upper and lower wall.

My previous garage had a wall of pegboard and I loved it, but you need proper size hooks or ways to fasten certain versions to keep them from pulling out easily. My new garage has one wall covered with panels (Gladiator) and a 4 x 8 section on another wall and a 4 x 4 section above one bench. It is a finished garage, so I did not really want peg board everywhere. However, I have a 60 inch rolling toolbox/bench with pegboard and a small rolling work station with pegboard. That pegboard allows me to hang basic wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, etc. that I use all the time. I like having both pegboard and the slat walls now. One nice thing about the pegboard on the rolling benches, using the little black retainers does work on some types of pegs on the front just like on the walls, but after arranging my pegs I rolled the benches around and use small zip ties or the small black peg retainers on the back and was able to tie down more pegs than I could have otherwise. You could probably do the same with pegboard on a wall by putting some pegs on the board before attaching it and securing them from behind where possible.

anybody knows of ways to keep hooks from pulling out easily in pegboard, I'm all ears - tried several things over the decades

I'd go French or slat but would be a major project with 25 years of stuff hung on 2 walls worth of space

I've heard of using a very small dab of hot glue to keep the hook in place. Put the glue where you can easily get to it.

Cut the glue with a razor or fishing line / dental floss if you want to move the hook.

I like the slatwall/french cleat hybrids; quite a few examples on Youtube where people build their own. So the gaps are made to take your own custom fittings, but the whole look is like slatwall. Basically french cleats that are close together. For me that means neat to look at and less cobwebs and dirt catchers.

I have peg boards in my garage and kitchen! I painted the kitchen one and it has my measuring cups, spoons and small gadgets! Love it.

I grabbed a bunch of slatwall from a store that was closing near me, guessing about 8 years ago. I have been slowly replacing is with plywood. I found the slat wall very limiting. With the plywood I can put things were I want, not where the slatwall will allow it.

Commercial slatwall, just about every large city has a retail fixture store with really good prices, most open to the public. 4 x 8 color slatwall is $30 a panel here. If you can't find a store, just ask a cop, there usually located in areas where most of the homicides happen
