I did a quick search and didn't see much on this subject.

So tell me some of the good and bad brands, attachments, and such. I've had to rent one only a couple times in the past. The next time I need one, I think I'll just buy one, so I'd like to do my homework now rather than the day I need it :lol_hitti

Price is definately a factor. It is not a tool that will be used much at all. A couple times a year maybe. NO Snap-On or other overpriced brand please.
OTC seems to stand out initially with a quick Google search. How about KD, or Sunex?

To make it more versatile, make sure it has an SAE thread on the emd. I believe it is 5/8-18. This way you can add different accessories.
The Harbor Freight one is metric, which limits the attachments you can put on.

There are knockoff brands with a standard thread, you just have to look at the specs.

I have a KD and Kent Moore 2619-1. I bought the KM from ebay. It has the 5/8 - 18 threads mentioned earlier. One other factor to consider is the weight of the slide. The KM I have is heavier than the KD. Frank

I have a tool aid and the attachments are cheap quality just bend not really help. I got a snap on one last month when they were on sale. I love it so far. Really stout and the attachments are strong.

I almost got one not long ago, ended up borrowing a nice Proto model.

Did a little research and ended up thinking KD was the best bet for me. Doubt it's as nice as my buddy's Proto, but it's an inexpensive kit that covers the bases from a brand I'll trust. I'm not positive, but Mac's slide hammer looks to be the KD re-branded.

One of these days I'm going to get one of my own; if you think about it report back with what you got and how you like it.

I've kept an eye out for one when at the swap meets and haven't come across one yet. I guess once guys buy one, it stays in the tool box for life.

That'd be my luck...find myself in situations where one would work better than regular pullers fairly often. Get one and those instances mysteriously disappear.

I've found two at flea markets and such, but they've not been in great shape and both lacked accessories. Oddball tools like this are hard to find second hand at pawn shops, flea markets et al.

I bought one at Napa autoparts. It looks like either a re-badged OTC Silver ******* or a high quality knock off of an OTC Silver *******. It came in a case with a bunch of attachments.

The key is whatever one you buy, get one with the industry standard 5/8-18 threads. That way, you can put all kinds of attachments on it.

My favorite attachment is the inner CV axle puller. That makes pulling CV axles a piece of cake. Another nice attachment is the one that you install the threaded end of a pair of Vise Grips. Then clamp the Vise Grips on the work piece, and start hammering.

This is the one I use
I didn't make it, I've always wanted to make it prettier, but it works very well.

It has a bit of angle welded on the end with a hole in it, you just put a bolt or a stud through and put a washer and nut on, makes different threads and fittings easy

Its 19mm (3/4") bar with a nut welded on the end, 600mm long (2ft) and the weight of the hammer part it about 3kg (6lbs+-)

Here in Australia, I've never seen a slide hammer that was not built in the workshop.

OTC is about all that's affordable and decent quality, so that's mostly what I have. I have a large kit with 5/8-18 thread and a smaller setup with 1/2-20 threads. I think it's all made in Taiwan. just go to tooltopia and search for slide hammer or OTC slide hammer

if your a professional tech snap on is the way to go. the pullers are interchangeable with the slide hammer. the slide hammer is super heavy duty and the screw is thick and will last forever. I bought two used ones one is from the 50's and one from the late 70's they still look new and perform great! For occasional use and home use the otc silver ******* is great its cheap and the whole kit comes with a bunch of adapters.
