Just doing some spring cleanup....

Just used this the other day on a very small metal barb fitting - removing the plastic sleeve off of the tube that was connected to it.

Can't think of the last time I used this before them.

Curious is this a useful tool in your toolbox or not...

I sold/gave away most of mine. I might use one maybe once every few years. IMO, there are better options.

I have an old pair of fleet brand slip-joints, use them everyday at work for various things.

What do you use instead of slip joint pliers?

I use them to grab things, to hold things, to grab things and pull until the slip off and smack me in the nose, to get those factory spring-type hose clamps off things, etc.

They are like vise grips and adjustable wrenches...good for minimalist tool kits, good when you don't have the perfect tool for the job.

They're a substitute for my fingers when I need a bit more torque, or if something is a little too unpleasant to handle. Like undoing stuck garden hose connections, stuck stopcocks, turning nuts and bolts when you dont mind marring them up. Similar uses to a really small pipe wrench or small channellocks... I guess I kinda use them like a pair of pliers... :p

Many uses working on small engines, I use the wider section to break hoses loose, and then for hose clamps as well, along with many other odds and ends, I only have one pair though, You dont need too many sets, they are just good to have.

I use them to round off bolts for people I hate...... Oh wait that is what happens to me when someone else uses them!! Mine sit in the box more than anything I have very few uses for them other than a few already mentioned.

Mostly to hold small parts when wire wheeling. Sometimes to squeeze something into place. Never for a fastener...

Slip joint pliers is that one tool everybody has along with the other tool, a hammer. I rarely use slip joint pliers, but I have them in a couple of my tool boxes. If I didn't have any I'm not sure I would buy some, but I'm not about to get rid of the ones I have. As to what I do use more often, it's usually Channelocks, Linesman pliers, or needlenose. I also have a pair of Knipex combination pliers I have been using a lot more lately.

They have their uses, but also have their limits. I like them for twisting loose stuck vacuum lines and fuel lines. They're ideal for small squeeze-type clamps. They're also handy for pulling off those stupid rubber inserts that always get stuck on GM brake caliper bolts.

One thing I never do is try to use slip-joints as a "wrench substitute". A rounded bolt/nut and a blood blister do not add any fun to a job. I do love my Snap-On Vacuum Grip slip-joints, wish they still made 'em.
