Small 3 Porsche Garage - Before & After Makeover

It's been several years since I've visited GJ, though the lock-down has freed up some time to browse the boards...

I realized that I had never posted pictures of my latest garage... We moved to a very cool house on a beautiful chain of lakes connected by the Huron River near Ann Arbor Michigan about 5 years ago. It was a project home that needed several updates as it had previously been owned by the proverbial little old lady. Luckily we didn't need to sell our old house until all of the interior / exterior remodel projects were complete.

Of course the most important project was the garage! Unfortunately when the previous owners built the house they only wanted enough room for 3 cars - I will eventually build an extension for a further 4 cars and create an 'L' shaped garage with a chill out area in the middle. But, to make it livable for now we threw some money at it & opened it up so at least it 'feels' larger than it is.

This is what I started with.... Note the gusset wall that supports the door tracks & openers - I knew this would need to go so that we could enjoy the high ceilings:

Bare stud walls & definitely void of any thrills.

I realize now that I really didn't take any 'in progress' pictures - probably due to the fact that each time I visited during construction I was bombarded with questions about how I wanted things done.

We all like instant gratification & pictures though, right? Here's what we ended up with in just over 40 days - including doubling up the ceiling joists, running a gas line for the heater, all new electical, lighting, insulation, drywall, paint and flooring:

Still need to hang my latest piece of garage art - the V10 skull!

I'll post up some pictures of the other cars that will eventually join these 3 once the extension is complete next year.

Very cool. In the top left corner, is that a mirror or a little alcove built into the wall?

Yes - it's a storage loft that extends the full length behind the wall to the right of the opening. I have a winch / platform that I can attach to lift and lower parts easily with.

Ann Arbor! I have a scone from Zingerman's in my mouth currently... they ship anywhere.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I really like that gray color on the board and batten exterior. Any chance of a wider shot to see how the whole garage looks?

Absolutely stunning garage.

I love your collection, all beautiful cars. Is that a E500?

Random question. Is the color of the Turbo Bordeaux?

Love the Spyder! The garage is great too; the high ceilings are great.

The Boxster Spyder is one of the best kept Porsche secrets... An incredibly capable car - and I was never a Boxster fan before owning it.

I really like those round edged craftsman lockers.

Actually my least favorite thing in the garage! Looking at alternatives for the extension.

Absolutely stunning garage.

Thank you.

The Benz is actually a 500e - the e500 was the face-lifted model in 1994. IMO, these are one of the best engineered cars ever built.

The 993turbo is Arena Red with a black interior (rare combination in the US). I spent a long time looking for this combination....

Where did you get the wall-mounted Porsche crest? I’d love on for my shop

Nice garage and set of Pcars, but you are missing the best - an early air-cooled 911.

We have similar taste in garage art. I'm still working on painting my walls.

I have your turbo's younger brother, 996TT in Arena Red out of the Brumos dealer. My brother in law used to own one very similar to yours, but with gray interior I believe. He even had he die cast painted AR just like you!

Very cool - I don't think I've ever seen a 996tt in AR and you rarely see any PTS 996's... It took me over 2 years to find my AR with black interior, they are rare in comparison with the gray/cashmere interiors.

Love it...great makeover.

Were you on Rennlist? I was back in the day...there was a great bunch of 993 foks on there. I miss the camaraderie.

I sold my 1996 C2 10 years ago. I have to find a picture...found this:

Thanks Bruce..

Yes, I'm on RL but it's not what it used to be. It's still the best resource for information, though the camaraderie has regressed since IB purchased the site from JohnD.

So it was allready widened when you got it? Would love to have a longhood but prices are way out of reach for my budget. Think in The States it's not that crazy as in Europe?

Keep up the good work!

Yes. I purchased the car from a Porsche restoration expert in NorCal - he had owned the car for over 30 years and in the mid 80's decided to 'modernize' it, which was quite popular then. Luckily he had amassed some pretty tasty original parts - including a full set of steel ST flares that he **** welded on properly.

During the purchase process we had a great conversation about my plans for the car (re-back date it to a street ST look), which turned into - well, its already there so why don't you handle the project. 18 months later I flew into Oakland to collect the car and drive down to Monterrey for classic car week. Such a great experience. A couple of the pictures earlier in this thread were taken at the inaugural Werks Reunion just a couple of days later.

I most definitely was lucky to find this car when I did - probably 5-6 months before the longhood market exploded. Prices have come down in the last 6 months, though you still have to pay $$$ for a solid car with no rust.

Is the arena red Porsche a 993TT?

Yes - it's the exact combination Arena Red / Black as the launch car displayed at the 1996 London Mototr Show, where I fell in love with it.

I am new to the Porsche world. I started out with a 2018 Macan S and just two weeks ago I purchased a 2018 911. I really like the engineering and the technology of the cars. I really like your Porsche emblem hanging next to the door.

Thank you - the crest is from a Porsche stand from a few years ago at the NAIAS

Wow that is an amazing space and the cars are incredible.

Thanks Mpower - I recently sold my gray market M635csi but have a E70 X5M as my daily driver. It's the most incredible SUV....

Very nice collection! Always fun to see the cars that were the cars to own when I was younger (I am 55 now) — I mean the late 80s to mid 90s cars, not the 67 or boxster.

Very nice garage and collection of P-cars. I notice a distinct lack of the red headed step child of the bunch, no 928, Lol. More of a red headed step child then the 914.

I'll be selling my '88 928 S4 5 sp this summer, its been a great car. Fortunately its been getting some love from enthusiasts so I'll be doing pretty decent on the resale, although that wasn't part of the equation when I purchased it.

Slowly picking my jaw up from the floor and mopping up the mess. Amazing selection of vehicles, no wonder you need the extra space. Even as more of a temporary solution, that's a great space. Collection goals right there, well done sir.

Agree - the 944 turbo & 993 turbo were both aspirational purchases carried from my youth. I thought I'd get bored with them & move on to other cars but I love them more today than ever. The 944 has been highly modified and is an absolute blast to drive.

Awesome cars and garage!

Garage? I'm sorry. I can't see the garage from the SEA of German Engineering.

Nice collection.

Thanks - the Germans definitely know how to engineer great cars (or at least they did)...

I like to 928 - especially the GTS, though I've never had the itch strong enough to buy one.

Thanks! Wish you were closer - a couple of the cars could use a detail...!

Sorry - missed the SWB car.

So, this one is my latest purchase and is currently in LA awaiting the transporter. It's a 1992 C2 with an Ed Pink built 3.8 motor & very nicely dialed in chassis. The color is mint green & very hard to find as very few were ordered by dealers when new. Highly sought after now. Still trying to figure out where to put this one but I couldn't resist!

Mint green is a great color.

I am partial to blues (Gulf Blue '75; added a silver boxster S briefly; now down to one 911 - a hotrod '73 in Gemini Blue). I also "de-redified" the '73. Nothing says "Arrest Me ! I'mon coke" like a bright red car.

never got a ticket in a blue car...
