I'm looking for a small toolbox to put in my office closet with general tools for around the house. I already have a number of large boxes that hold most of my tools out in the shop. I have a shelf in the closet I'd like to put it, but all the small boxes have that thick top lid that hits the wall and pushes the box away from the wall a couple inches. Does anyone make a box with this style lid but in a 22"-23" width?

Looking for something roughly this size.

Interesting conundrum. I'd be surprised if it exists since a small box is made to be portable and wouldn't normally encounter the issue you are having.

The something like the second box would work except for the lid, maybe look at hinge options at a place like McMaster? I bet you could rivet on something that would work

My local auto parts store has these little sit on top tool boxes with 3 drawers with a screwdriver rack on the back. Probably not what you are looking for. Performance tool brand.

All of the small boxes I've seen always have a bit of the box corner that pushes back when opened. Maybe make a custom lid if you don't need the height?

edit: or a mid box like larry_g suggested

I considered that, but I have a few items thay won't readily fit in the drawer. Like a multimeter. I was hoping to put them in the top portion. I could always set them on top, but then I lose the option to pack the box up and take it to some part of the house I'm working on. I just bought that smaller craftsman box from my first post from Lowes. Gonna open it soon and check it out.

The new craftsman box fits on the shelf perfect! Below it is my Hazet 190 I used to use. I had to set it on that fold out dinner table since the style of box wouldn't work on the shelf.

I got some drawer liners installed in the new Craftsman box and moved all my tools over. It filled up quick, here's some pictures of the layout.

How do you like that Lobster adjustable wrench? I just got one and it has slightly less slop than my old Crestalloy wrench. But the Lobster is 10" and the old one is 12". They open to the same size, and the Japanese one is probably 1/3 the weight of the American one.

It's good quality, but I haven't felt like I need to buy more of them. That box used to be my junkyard scrounging and roadside repair tool kit so I tried to set it up light weight. I got caught up in the specs and bought the lobster with the widest range, but didn't realize it doesn't close all the way shut. That kind of bugs me even though it hasn't really limited me as I have a smaller adjustable in the kit. That being said, I'm seriously impressed with this little Bahco adjustable and have bought a few more. It is the smoothest, least sloppy adjustable I've ever used.

What about a Tstak? Modular so you can add what you want. The pull out drawers let it sit tight to the wall

Well I already bought one, but I wish I would've known about those. I actually prefer plastic when loading into a car regularly. The metal ones get scratched up and the corners tend to damage/scratch upholstery and whatever else they are near.

My days of junkyarding and roadside repairs are over for the time being so I'm less concerned about it now. Those look like they have good latches though. The portable boxes with lids weak link is when they're loaded down heavy all the weight is on the latches. Where do you find those?

Edit: I see now that's dewalts modular system. I didn't look at theirs, but looked at Milwaukee. I can't really explain why, but they didn't seem that practical to me. You'd have to have multiple units to get drawers and deeper space. They seem more suited to construction sites rather than mechanic/minor home repair tools which is what I need for this set.

I have the Toughsystem for carpentry tools. I dont have any of the drawer boxes however, just conventional deep tool boxes.. Ive played with the drawer boxes in store and they have nice slides and lock closed real well. Ill say the conventional boxes are very tough, I can stand on them like a step stool but I probably wouldnt stand on the drawer style, but they should be OK. I think there was a revision a couple years ago on the drawer style because there were issues with them jaming when the drawers were overloaded, but I think they got that fixed now.. . Theyre waterproof and can stay in the open box of my truck through rain and driving and still be dry inside. Theyre built like Pelican cases if youre familiar, even a bit heavier construction than Pelican. Latches are almost too strong they really snap closed.

I got mine through the local lumber yard, but they are available anywhere that sells Dewalt, just google Toughsystem. I have a couple of the Milwaukee boxes too. Theyre nice, but the Dewalt is tougher IMHO. Both above are Dewalt products, one called Tstak, one called Toughsystem. The Toughsystem is larger and heavier duty. Id compare the Tstak to something like a Festool Systainer or Sortimo; lighter duty.

Theres a new Toughsystem2. Im not sure if theyre compatable with original TS. Need to confirm that.
