I am back in business. Craftsman Block Grinder, flea market, $25.00. No repairs needed. Runs perfectly. Just will do new wheels and refinish. I have looked for one like forever!
Stay tuned for hopefully a great restoration. Finding one in this great of shape for $25.00 is a real treat!
Especially since very few parts are still available. The little black shield on the light is original to the grinder but I had thought someone added it on. Anyway, I am very happy!

Best Regards
Herb

Good to have you stop by. I am mulling colors for the refinish:

Red or Gray or Red And Gray.

Congrats on the block grinder, I know you've been looking for one for a while and very happy you were able to finely get yourself one.

Thanks for looking in. I am sure the seller has never heard of Garage Journal, or the grinder would have been $125.00 instead of $25.00! I did see one today on ebay in worse shape than mine that actually was $125.00. I want to get drivesitfar to look at it, as I know he has written a lot about them on the Block Grinder thread.

Thanks again and
Best Regards
Herb

Herb: that's too funny cause i had just logged on to GJ and was reading your thread and saw you wanted to know more about your block grinder and you PM'd me asking me to look at it. i'm far from the expert on block grinders even though i own maybe 5 still and have owned maybe 10 or more. i did spend a lot of time on the BLOCK GRINDER thread cause i like the members that post there a lot. the members that know more about these great grinders are Torqueman2002 is my go to guy when have any questions about a block and i actually named him DOC (blockhead). ExMaxima, JZiggy, and several others have all torn these all down and rebuilt, restored and used these.

your 1/2 HP craftsman is maybe an early 70's built (date built on bottom plate usually) and we call them a flat top block. it has plenty of power and probably equivalent to any 3/4 Hp grinder sold new today cause they changed how they rate HP now. i actually like the round tops better cause of the look that were made in the 60's, but the flattops are built just as well.

i see some aluminum on the one wheel and if you ask DOC or some of the other guys on the block grinder thread they will all mostly agree to just spend the money to replace the wheels, but you can clean some up that will work fine for years. one thing that might have some of them replacing stones is i found information where stones exploding on a grinder can kill, hospitalize or shoot holes in your roof or walls of your garage.

i also recommend full face shield when using any bench grinder.

if you want to know more about your grinder i'd post up pictures with questions over on this block grinder thread that i haven't spent a lot of time on lately, but i see posts on there all the time so guessing the guys are still there to help. if you have specific questions just ask here on your thread or on that thread and post up information you learned over here too if you want to.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=249539

nice buy and most likely you could probably use that grinder as is for 20 or so more years, but if you change the bearings, clean it up and change the wheels it might work better.

here's a picture of my 1/2 Hp industrial "round top" block and if you want to spiff your's up a bit Doc's 1 HP 'Flat top" block is something that i've always liked. I think Doc's 1 HP in the picture looked maybe like it should have been thrown away when he bought it and it certainly doesn't look that way now. these old block grinders were built OLD SCHOOL and built to last!!

Block Grinder is done but waiting parts on new eye shields. Chose metallic blue to match my craftsman vise. Grinder will mount on this bench. New grinding wheels. 36 and 60 grit and a new wire wheel. This was really a fun project! I have already found a commercial Block Grinder on a pedestal. Getting a price on it tomorrow.

Best Regards
Herb

Thanks for stopping in. I do have heat in both my garage and back shop/office. I prefer to paint outside on a warm, calm day, but that failing, I rig up a cardboard and plastic sheeting temporary paint booth near an open door.

These block grinders take us back to the "American art-deco machine age". The quality is fantastic. I think we have really lost a lot in that area. Thanks for your comments and I always appreciate your input on the thread.

Best Regards

The universal eye shield kit comes with hardware to fit most applications.
All I needed were the basic mounts and eye shields. I liked the kit and think it would fit most grinders.

Hi Herb,
Glad that you are back in action! Nice job on the blockhead. It's no surprise that you've found another one. That's one of the primary rules of old machine hunting; when you've found a quest machine and bought it, another one will show up immediately. That's the way it goes :bounce:

Thanks for stopping in! I talked to the guy who has the Block Grinder on the pedestal today.
His machine must have come from a big shop as it shows very abusive use, and I am sure it has been run very hard. Even with it pretty rough looking he wants $150.00. I offered $80:00 but he turned that down. Having some experience with them now, it is hard to get parts, and you can put another $50-$75 in one during restoration. I know the pedestal is worth around $25-$30 even if rough. Doing that one would take a long time and probably some new bearings at least.

I am just thinking on that one right now----He has my phone number and the $80.00 offer.

Thanks again for your visit as always!!!

Best Regards
Herb
