I always thought Rainfall improved River Fishing when Fly Fishing. At least in what I have experienced on our rivers (all of 1 that I have actually been on) it seems to be the case. I'm still fairly new to the whole Fly fishing endeavour. I do enjoy it. Havn't quite got to the point of tying my own gear yet... Which species do you target Primarily? (sorry I know this isnt really Garage Related)

Knyte Tyne

we have had some pretty serious flooding in this month, which does change the whole dynamics of the rivers and streams. I am NO expert on fly fishing, having just taken it up since I retired. I don't do any fly tying, just use the off the counter flys. I am learning a lot about it, and love spending some time matching wits with the Trout. Those are what I am after.

Don't worry any about not garage related as I talk about everything anyone wants to discuss, and fishing is certainly in the top ten here.

I enjoy your thread, and try as keep up with it and many others.

Best Regards
Herb

Great looking place Herb. Enjoy fishing and come back with a good fish story for us.

rmalkow2

Thanks for your comments on my efforts on the place. We enjoy it a lot and try as hard as we can to keep it up. I can't and wife can't do what we used to do but our health is pretty good for those in their 70's, and we are very thankful for that.

I hope to report some good taking on the river Trout soon!!

Herb,
I regularly check in on your thread but have not commented in quite some time now. My apologies for that. Just want to say how great everything looks at your place. I know it doesn't get that way by itself. Your hard work and efforts have really paid off. I appreciate you posting pictures; it gives me more ideas of things I want to do here at our place.
Great work!

impala4speed

I am very pleased you find something interesting here. I try and only post something that someone may find of use, or interest. I am not great in photography, but I am getting better with taking pics with my new Galaxy Tablet, and wireless transfer to my laptop.

I am pleased you come by and hope to see you here very often!!

Best Regards
Herb

Spa Maintenance

Our Sundance Spa is now 20 years old. We have really enjoyed it and it just keeps on giving us a nice start or end to the day. It was time to drain the tub, scrub it up, and refill it. In the past 20 years, I have had only one pump seal go bad, and one flo switch. Both were pretty easy to repair myself. After your first service call, you are MORE than anxious to fix everything on your own. These guys who work on them charge more for a service call than heart surgery.

I change the water three times a year, and keep the water balanced well. We enjoy a good soak especially in winter, but like the summer season as well.

Best Regards
Herb

More Spa

After a good refill, you simply use the chart to balance the water, and we like the temp about 94 degrees.

HS: i love that you actually USE YOUR HOT TUB and maintain it yourself too. I hope you get a chance to take a few pictures of your fishing trip cause some of us that aren't even fisherman would love to see the settings you'll see. as a bonus i hope you catch some fish that probably taste a whole lot better than what you can buy at the store. STAY SAFE cause a lot of rivers in our area are at flood stage and with all the rain you've gotten lately i bet yours are too so the water will be a bit higher and running faster than normal.

cheers and good luck!!!

Great job on the spa Herb. My wife and kids have used our spa a fair bit. Now that Winter is here maybe not so much.

Aaron

I have seen your spa on your thread. I am really glad your family is enjoying it.

It is very good for soaking away the day in my old age.

I will indeed try and snap a picture or two of the Trout over 5 lbs. Sadly I don't see that many on my hook, and I am probably the king of "Catch and Release".

Granite Desk Top Done

We finally got the granite back from the shop, having it cut and bullnosed to fit our antique desk in the office. They did a wonderful job and joined the two pieces to the point you can barely see the center seam. They routed out the back side and put steel rods to secure the two pieces together. I was very pleased, and so the granite is now a desk top and not a bench top in my shop.

Wife was also pleased with the desk.

Best Regards
Herb

That desk looks great Herb.

And so does the spa - we have given thought to getting one, but have never "got serious" about it - maybe we should :dunno:.

Enjoy your fishing trip Herb. :)

HS: very nice use of your FREE (or almost free now) pieces of granite. it looks awesome and especially with your laptop sitting on top queued up to GJ's main page.

cheers and best of luck with the fishing and hope you catch a few even if you do release them so they can live another day.

Herb,
That granite top is perfect for that size and style of desk. It was a good use of the piece of granite and it's still serving your garage interests as well I see with the computer ready to read GJ!!!.

Thanks I am very happy with the use of the granite on the desk. That desk is very old, and for a long time it was my dad's miter saw stand. I brought it home after he passed and stripped it down, repaired all the joints, and refinished it.

Thanks for your visit!

Thanks for your kind remarks. I think you would enjoy a spa, and they are much cheaper to buy in the USA now than when I got ours. You do experience some costs in chemicals and a slightly higher electric bill.

The best news is that the entire project was FREE. The granite shop is the one my Son in Law uses on a weekly basis, so they just "did" it for him as a courtesy. (Free is my middle name btw).

Thanks for your visit and encouragements with my little operations!!

Thanks for your comments! The two halves of the granite, joined together, became pretty heavy to lift. I couldn't have done it alone. Son in Law is able to do it but we used a two wheeler to roll it in the house. We did not glue it on the top, as I promise you (excepting an earthquake) it isn't going anywhere!
The desk itself is solid oak and pretty heavy on it's own. I place the desk over a hundred years old.

Thanks for your visit as always.

Desk came out great. Looks like a nice comfy place to sit back with a adult beverage and check on all the shenanigans going on in everyone's shops and garages.

Well done on the desk Herb, you are correct on the joint, I tried to look for it and wasn't able to find it. Do you mind sharing a photo of the joint, you have my curiosity peaked.

I really liked the look of those granite pieces on my workbench, but just wasn't practical. The desk looks and works great, and it pleased the wife that I wasn't using the good stuff for my shop. She is happy with the look in our home office.

If you get it in just the right light, the seam is visible. Just sitting at the desk you don't notice it. They acutally routed out three places underneath and put in a mini rebar, with some metal covering and cement. I was amazed.

HS: i like your desk even more now that you mention it's history. over 100 years old and and it was in your dad's shop/garage as his miter stand or workbench. i bet your dad is smiling wherever he's at knowing how you saved it not to mention how nice your shop/garage and shed work areas look.

it's suppose to be 80's here in the PNW today with 0 MPH of wind and no bugs or humidity. pretty much a perfect day for me to ORGANIZE my garage/shed/storage.

cheers and hope you are catching fish or just having a great time out at the river.

Damn Squirrels!

My suposed "mouse" problem turned out to be a squirrel problem. The little @@^**@ tore up my crawlspace vent screens and was helping himself to shelter under my house. He was ratting around and clawing the floorboards in the dining room sending us over the edge!!

He tore up the vents, so I had to seal them up. I tried to compensate for the lack of vents by building a crawlspace door made of cedar and heavy rabbit wire and screen wire (to sheild mice). I am now going to make frames with close knit rabbit wire so I can reopen the vents.

This little @@@***%* has just about drove me up the wall!! Best I can tell he is gone as it has been silent under there for two days!!

Best Regards
Herb

Good luck with that squirrel Herb. He's definitely not gone, gone. He's still scampering around your property somewhere but you've managed to modify his prior learned behavior. If you make a strong enough vent/barrier to the crawl space he will be kept out. If not then more permanent action may be required.
They can be real pests sometimes.

Herb, I feel for you. A squirrel chewed through the screening on a soffit vent and turned our attic into her nursery/sauna. I put a black sunflower seed buffet out for her and while she was gorging on that I installed welded 1/4" mesh in the hole before covering with a new soffit screen. It's amazing how much damage they can do. I'm feeling much better about sending Bob Jr. to meet his maker.

Herb: yep Squirrels are just rats/mice with fuzzy tails that have not been killed on site like rats/mice have. they usually do damage to roofs and houses exteriors, but not surprised that one likes your basement. since you showed a mouse that you'd caught it sounds like a party was going on under your house.

i agree with your process of closing it up and then putting on better screening as you are doing. WELL DONE!!

not sure if you are using bird feeders or leaving food out for birds or other animals, but squirrels are the bi product of excess food supply as are rats/mice and flying rats (crows & starlings up here in the PNW) so we are reluctant to feed the birds. i'm planning on hanging some hummingbird feeders cause we've got them all over the place here and not sure how they survive in the winters. if you do have bird feeders making them inaccessible for squirrels isn't easy, but cleaning up spills and excess on the ground can help.

good luck

Thanks for the encouragements. This was the first morning that my defenses have not been defeated. I can only hope the little animal was OUT when I sealed the last vent last night. I have also ordered two cages to trap him under the house if need be.

Thanks for visiting!!

Thanks!! I now have to make special vents that will attach to the house, have stong wire and screen and bolt them in place. I will then have a cover of wood or metal that will install in winter. Drilling holes in brick with a masonry bit gets old fast! I find that if I drill a while, and then put a center punch in and loosen some brick, the drilling goes faster. I have a LOT of holes yet to drill.
