your winter project looks good by cleaning up arranging all the craftsman tools in one box.How many memories did they bring back from 1968 when they were new and the whole world was ahead of you?

how many suprises did you find that you had not seen in years?

Keep on posting your projects here.

Thanks for your comments captian14. I was just a pup indeed when I got that tool set and box. I have used it pretty hard over the years. Your very right about the memories.
Found quite a few things in it I had totally forgotten about!!

Thanks for your visit

Spring shop clean up and remodel. I installed a couple of Craftsman wall cabinets. These are of great quality and easy to assemble. They hold a lot of things for great storage. General straightening up and working on bench and cabinets this week. Shown is my poor man's buffer guard, made at no cost from an old plastic tub. Works great. The twin rotation of the buffer wheels pull the lint and dust into the back of the guard. Cheap, free!

More pics in next post!

Best Regards
Herb

More shop cleaning. Table Saw/Router set up after rebuild of saw. Some pipe wrenches I saved. I will be next rebuilding a radial arm saw that is coming in the shop next week. It is an 8 1/2 inch saw. I will go to Tulsa on Saturday to get it from my friend who no longer wants it. Not sure where I will put it though.

Anyway, it feels good to have the shop straightened up!!!

Best Regards

More Pipe Wrench Hospital. Brands included are Rigid, Keen Kutter, True Value, Irwin, Crescent, and two MCC (Japan). One of the big Rigid wrenches is shown in the cleaning soup. I guess I have become obsessed with pipe wrenches!
I really like the big Crescent wrench, but it has a slight bend in the handle. I am going to try heating it with my torch to see if it can be straightened. One of the pipe wrenches is a "Dunlap" which was one of Sears cheaper branded tools. It might be a collector like the "Keen Kutter" is. Some of these older tools are in hot demand.

Will that work as a spray? I got purple power so is your mixture stronger than that? That old chest has years upon years of grease and crud in it. I'm going to restore it in next few weeks.

Have a good one, Gerard

Simple green works best as a soak. I would make up a strong mix of it (or Purple Power) and wearing rubber gloves I would sponge it on a few times. Let it soak if possible. It needs a little time on there to work best. Keep it as wet as you can for as long as you can. Then you could rinse it with a light power washer if you have one. I had good luck on the siding of my Travel Trailer by doing that. Just remember Simple Green can eat your skin and crack your fingers if you don't wear rubber gloves.
Good Luck!!

Herb

How do you renew rounded, worn teeth on the jaws of pipe wrenches? I have a 36" Rigid to restore and was just going to take time and hand file them sharp again.

Hi rmalkow2

I am enclosing a link to amazon whereby you can purchase the jaw and pin for a Rigid Pipe wrench, plus other items of that nature. I have replaced one jaw part, and it took a lot of drilling to get the pin out. Here is the link to the parts if you go that route: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_pg_2...s=rigid+pipe+jaw+parts&ie=UTF8&qid=1398912882.
Otherwise, you could try and hand file the jaw serrations but I have never done that. I might suggest clamping jaws in a vise and using a 4 in hand held grinder, but be very careful and wear eye protection. Hand filing might work if your jaws are not that bad. I would use a rat tail file and see what it does. Let me know if you have any luck. Disclaimer: Me and another guy on here can testify that those hand held grinders are very dangerous!!! Please be careful!!

Herb, you must not have any more tools to clean! your workshop is immaculate and looking great.
If a crate of tools from Australia is delivered to your door, you will know who they are from, just apply your magic and return to sender.

Thanks Herb,
I had not thought about looking for a replacement jaw and will save the link. I may try the low buck approach first with the hand filing. I agree with you about the hand held grinder and safety. Honestly while its slower I think I could control the finished look better doing it the slow way by hand filing. I appreciate the good tips.

I think you may be a bit disappointed when you open the crate , I have NO SO, MAC, Williams, S&K or Proto.
Basically its just Sidchrome, Dowidat and Minimax to be shipped. Sorry...
They funny thing is you see them advertised here as "Antique" but they have stood by me through thick and thin.

Cheers:thumbup:

I am interested in all brands of tools. It is a secret I have, but I am actually an antique tool collector in a small way. Most of my collection is in more of Carpenter tools. I haven't shown them on GJ because I am not sure anyone is interested in that subject.
I would love to have "any" tools from other countries. I do have some German made tools I bought while stationed in the Army over there.

Thanks for visiting my thread again!!

Herb

Herb, IMHO you should show them on the GJ. I think you will find heaps of members that would be interested, myself included.

That said I have a few antique tools that I have collected over the years myself that I will post some pictures off in time..

Cheers.

Herb, on post# 352 you mentioned you had some antique carpenter tools. Feel free to post some photos. At some point in time I have to start going through my fathers tools and I am sure some were my grandfathers. I know he used to go to auctions in his day for tool shopping. I am sure there will be a something I cannot identify.

Thanks

OK I had been thinking of posting my collection of 1920 - 1930s tools. Since you also have some, we should show some and invite other members to show theirs as well.

Cpt14, I will do so and I would be most interested in seeing what you have as well. Some of those older tools are real treasures. There is also a very specific market for them. The collectors frown on cleaning and repainting, but I just have to clean them up!! I don't plan on selling anything though.

Best Regards
Herb
