Well I have gotten two planes done so far. The shop is an absolute mess but I don't care! All I can think of is getting that "next one" done. The Dremel tool is a must have on this work. 1/2Cup was right about this being so addictive!

Herb,

Just fantastic.

It is incredible what you have achieved in such a short time..

I have never seen any thing like your 409 with a blade that has four sides:thumbup:

Take things slowly and enjoy the moment it is very satisfying to see something come back to life like that.

You've been a bit busy I see

Those planes are very nice pieces to add to your office
You really put the Herb touch to them

I'm staying away from the planes (I have too many saws) :willy_nil:willy_nil

So where did you come across the wilton vice??
congrats..

Hooray, Herb found his Wilton. That's not a bad size and surely more mobile.

Have a good one, Gerard

Gerard

I am totally happy!! I was beginning to think I was the only person on GJ who DID NOT have a Wilton Vise.

While this one is smaller than I want, it will do for now.

There is a "Wilton 4 inch Bullet" out there somewhere with my name on it.

do ever have any "free" time? seems you always have a project in the works.

WarrenJ

Well us old retired people need to keep busy or we will begin to fall apart.
"If you rest---you rust" is what my dad taught me.

I do like having a project in the works, and I like to keep about three or four things on my work order list.

Nice to have you drop by again!!!

Thanks for your comments on the planes. I was very pleased at how the first two came out. Something about doing them really brings a great deal of satisfaction. They are a lot of work, and very detailed. Prior I would not have given a raggedy dollar bill for a plane, but now I can't get enough of them. I am now on the binge looking for a Record, a Bailey, a Sargent, and the coveted Lie Neilsen.

The little Wilton vise was at a flea market my wife attended. She is trained to scout for a "Wilton" when she goes shopping with the daughter. She usually asks up front at the desk if they have a Wilton Vise. Usually they look at her like a White Faced Cow, with hollow eyes. This time the clerk knew they had "some" but not the brand. The wifey brought this home to me for $15.00!

Thanks as always for your interest in my thread and for dropping by!!!

Best Regards
Herb

I had never noticed the four sided blade either. I think in the past, I used the plane once or twice, but never paid any attention to it. It is pretty novel in application.
Thanks for your encouragements!

Four planes done and sitting on top of their home. Two to go. Even the little cheap block plane came out looking good. I just had to paint it gray and red. Two to go, but the Wilton new/old vise is taking a bath first. I can't wait to get it done!

Best Regards

I was a little disappointed with the Wilton Vise. It is a Wilton and made in the USA, but I don't see a lot of Wilton quality in it. The castings are rough, and the guide rod and screw are loose. It seems to be a lesser quality vise than the main Wiltons are. It is a good little light duty homeowner's vise, but not at all what I was wanting. I will do it up, and relegate it to light duty on my electronics bench. I am still on the prowl for that elusive Wilton Bullet!!!! But anyway the price was right. ;)

I have one of those as well... Bought it because it was a Wilton. Definitely light duty and not worth more than $20

allinon72

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!! I visited the Wilton web site and they have not much like the one I have anymore. Everything on their site is highly expensive, and well made. This one almost looks like it was made in China.

Herb, from what I learned from the GJ is that exposed screw vises aren't the strongest and meant from light duty. Now that's not to say its a bad little vise. All vises aren't perfect in their castings so I wouldn't let the be great concern when it comes to this one. I have some US vises and some Chinese vises and as long used within its limits they work just fine. I would paint it paint it, lube it and put it to work. Best of luck there.

Have a good one, Gerard

Don

Thanks for stopping by. I am very amazed at Wilton even putting their name on this POS. When you look at their website you see some less expensive ones but nothing this flimsy. I saw (as you probably know) some bullet ones that are upwards of a Grand in cost. Yes, I will eventually find one, but the name of the Garage Journal game is that you must get it for a "steal" of a deal to be politically correct. Most people I know of that actually have a Wilton Bullet (Machinist's vise) and want to sell, know the value of them. There is no free lunch on these!!

The soaking solution (brine) is a mix of Simple Green, and heavy duty kitchen degreaser. I usually soak something like the vise overnight, then take out and dry well. It is strong enough to remove most old paint, or at least soften it up.

Thanks again for your visit.

Best Regards
Herb

Thanks for the visit. I will paint it up well, and grind the guide rod to better fit it's slot. This will smooth up the action. I will use a heavy white grease on it that turns clear when it sets up, and that fills some play, and makes a smooth screw action. I will use it for a light duty vise. I did not expect the moon on it, but I was counting on the Wilton name, which has let me down.

I got the little Wilton vise done. It is working pretty well now. I reground the guide bar and changed some washers and spacers. It will make a nice little light duty vise.

Herb, none the less you have still achieved a great result on the vise.

It think Gerard is on the money with his assessment.

Out of curiosity what brand and type of grease did you use??

Actually I was pleased with the little vise after I worked it over. I used a NAPA brand grease which is intended for hinges and latches on vehicles. I works really well in the vise.

My next project is this heavy "no name" vise that is probably an import. I have had this vise for about 25 years and it has taken anything I have thrown at it. It is a good one, and it deserves a tune up!! Clean and paint and lube. Only markings are "100" on one side and "4" on the other.

Should be done and mounted by the weekend.

Best Regards
Herb Spencer

4 on one side and 100 on the other? :headscrat
Would it be a reference to the size Herb - 4"/100mm?
(It's a bit hard to tell in the photos).

I've had a little no-name vise that I've had for more than 30 years - apart from having to repair a jaw-pad that broke (after a lot of abuse from a very large hammer), I've had no problems with it.

I'm sure that yours will be spectacular.

Mark Thanks for stopping by!! I have scoured the vise and find no ID on it anywhere. Your references to size are most likely correct. It is a 4 inch vise. I have had it too long to remember where I got it. I can tell you that it sure does not "seem" like an import. The castings are fine, and the action is very smooth. I have pounded on it for years without any problems. I am thinking it may have come from a farmer's sale, as I often bought things like that around here. It was sure not new when I got it, so it could be much older than 25-30 years. One would think something on it would ID the maker, but so far----nothing. (LOL--maybe it is a "shadow" Wilton?? ha ha)

Thanks again for commenting and visiting!!

I now have two vises done. The last photo is my Craftsman vise awaiting it's turn to be redone. The large vise will replace the Craftsman on my main workbench when that bench is re topped with oak. The small Wilton will go on my work bench in the back shop.

Nice work on the vises/vices as always! Want to do a couple for me?! What did you use to strip them down? Apologies if you mentioned it and I missed it...

Herb,
I always like to see updates from your shop. It looks like an enjoyable place to be. Your projects are well executed and organized, I'd like to get my garage to a state like yours someday. Maybe when I'm retired......

By the way, I did find a Wilton bullet, and yes it was "steal" of a price. Guess what. It turned out to have been broken and rewelded! It works OK and I think I can get it to turn a little smoother when I have time to fiddle with it, but it's always something. You'll find yours too.

Same here for the cleaning and rehab work.

I have seen one on CL for a while. I have to post a link to it so I can get someone to ID it for me. It's in a used shape and green and worn. It would be bigger than my 4 inch I have now.

Thanks so much!! I thought they both came out well. I am posting a product I use to clean things, and I have had good luck with it. I am not sure where it is sold though. I get it through a wholesaler who does service some parts houses. I have not seen it in the usual places. It works great and can be diluted as you wish. (Rubber gloves recommended).

Thanks for your visit!!
