Somehow have missed this thread, you have a really nice place going for you Herb. When going through this thread, it is actually something from the very beginning that stuck with me, when you said something in the lines of, that it is small, but you are very appreciative of what you have. I think it's true, that when one looks up at all the garages here, we sometimes should just stop and appreciate our current situation.
Regarding the riding, just wanted to pitch in about the course. I try to take a course every spring, which in Finland we call the "ruosteenpoisto", which translates to Rust removal
I think it's a good way to get the basics back together, especially here where we have half a year of break during winter... Also, I would say that major part of biking is the scenery and the company. Just getting one that feels ok and easy to handle, and you will enjoy your trips. You can always then swap the bike later on when you find out more requirements during the trips.
On the tool tote side, I have one which I specifically purchased for one purpose alone: keeping it always empty. It's surprisingly hard to do some times... Having it empty below my tools, allows me to take in 30 seconds all the tools I need for a job. Usually I would need the cordless drill, some screws, tape measure, level, etc. and it's a hastle to carry them. Just to be able to take the drill and a selection of screws anywhere has helped me when working outside for example.
