Ya I know the deal, I was wondering if they had been awarded to you. That was someone's pride and joy at some point in their life, how did you end up with them?

I can't find info as to if its gold plated 14k 10k or 24k I'm not quite sure and I don't know if they were purchased by chrysler for snap on and then gold plated by another company cause they went 3rd party for the pouch as well

I have a set, Chrysler gave them to Master Technicians who had completed all the requirements.
I have a small Snap On tool box that is a gold tool award

Can you actually use those wrenches for work? Does the gold coating stay on if you do?

You can use them and it's about the same hardness as chrome.

I have a tote full , from a small Snap on tool box to sockets and wrenches.

Thank you. These threads always made me curious about that. Now I want to find some… just to have some gold tools. I would only buy them at estate sale prices though… I would not buy them at collector prices just to use them…

I guess that I have always ignored them thinking that they were for display only…

I want to make another point about these sets…

When I first started going to estate sales, the people running them often did not see the value in tools. They were often sold for virtually nothing. These sets were often an exception because the award packaging (often a pretty wooden box) made them stand out…

Anyways… these days, the real estate sale companies not only see the value in tools… but they often google values… with the packaging… that gives them an easier place to start… it is easy for them to find values on these award sets…

I am just saying that every year, they are probably less likely to be found at giveaway prices…

Does anyone find it ironic that the award was inch wrenches in a metric world? Maybe they didn't want to risk the awardee using the wrenches for actual work.
Yeah dont use SAE very often anymore I wouldn't ever want to use this set for working on anything it's pretty rare wish there was a way to find out how many sets were given away on the other hand my MAC Racers choice wrenches get used and they work great SAE as well not used as much but most of the collector stuff Is perfectly fine to use as any 9ther wrench socket etc

Pure conjecture, but I'd guess in 1996 when the wrenches were awarded, automotive wasn't nearly as metric centric as it is today. That's been more years ago, than it feels like...

Unfortunately rare does not necessarily mean valuable in this case. Looking over sold ebay listings they used a couple tool companies for these award. Some of the snap on stuff sold for below market value if anything.
Across all the tool brands these awards are sub $50 most of the time.

Find me a listing on eBay for this 1996 set or a sold listing. There's not a single one 1992 93 94 95 97 are all that's listed some older Bonney stuff this is the set to have as well as 2003 and 2004 good luck Even finding one for sale if I had to guess there's less than 10 left in the USA if you can find a sold listing for the 1996 set I'll give you 20$

Its interesting how many of the tech awards were handed out by GM & Mopar over the years. Peronally, I've been collecting the Chevrolet version for the past couple of years. I've got 1/2 dz so far but am looking to complete the initial series 1988-1998. If anyone here has one they are looking to unload, PM me please. I'll pay fare market value (but not bloated Ebay through it at the wall and see if will stick prices).

Speaking about auto industry awards, my older brother hung-out with some talented kids. One won the national Chevrolet All-American Soap Box Derby, in Akron OH and one won the national Fisher Body Guild competition. This was in the 1950's.

My friend who's retired from GM Design & Tech Center in Warren MI where he was a stylist, said a number of his co-workers won honors as kids in the Fisher Body competition.
