I have a chance to buy a brand new BRA7180VEM for $3200 out the door. Worth the money? What are some comparable compressors of different brands?

By whats strong inyour locality. Up north, Saylor-Beale. Gulf coast, Champion.

Actually, there are lots of better compressors for less money. Too many to list really.

So..."not worth it" is the consensus.
I don't know where to begin on finding a better compressor for less money. I suppose I need to do some research. Thanks for the help.

Lots of good threads on GJ about compressors. www.tptools.com carries Quincy. Spend the savings on the Snap-On truck for things they actually make and not relabel.

I have the same unit (got it nearly-new for around a grand) - it's got the Italian-made Chinook brand K-30 pump on it, and is comparable to a Bel-Aire compressor. Oh, mine also has a Baldor 7HP (not 7.5HP, a special value-engineered 7HP one) motor and no true motor starter like they claim in their marketing materials. They use a contactor along with a thermal-magnetic circuit breaker (that doubles as the on-off switch) instead of a NEMA motor starter.

But if you're going to spend over $3K, as stated above I'd look at a Saylor-Beall, Champion or a Quincy.

If you're not running a blast cabinet or continuous-use air tools, you may not need that big of a unit.

Sealor-Beall or Champion. The lower end Quincy and IR are trading on their old reputations.

Lots of choices. Pick a 1800 rpm single phase motor. That weeds out the low end machines.

I don't think it's a terrible price, but there is for sure some markup for the Snap-On name since they are definitely not the ones producing it.
For a bit less money you could get a fully spec'd 2-stage 7hp unit from Champion, Quincy, BelAiee, etc. (Fully equipped = auto drain, aftercooler, mag starter, etc).

What are some thoughts on the Quincy 271CS80VCB? Around $2400. Even after buying hose and fittings I'd still have less invested than just the compressor from snap on. I only need one for home use and I'm aware that a high dollar 80 gallon is overkill. But anything worth doing is worth overdoing.

I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for snap on just simply because they look awesome. But I won't pay $800 just for some paint and a sticker.

I have the older (mid 90's) version of that Champion 5hp unit. It is fantastic. Low RPM makes for a pretty quiet unit. Has worked flawless for me for the last 10yrs. Picked it up used for a song.

Well the snap on man came back today and I scored the compressor for $1900 total. I'm quite pleased with it myself.

1900 for a 1300 dollar compressor. Interesting. Reminds me why I don't visit the Snap-on Truck. I guess if you are a pro and you feel you need that insurance in a name I can't fault you. There are other tools you could have spent far more money on. I wonder what Cost is on that if Home depot can sell something similar for under 1300 bucks... Dewalt brand even, http://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-80-Gal-Stationary-Electric-Air-Compressor-DXCMV5048055/204068487

5hp vs 7 hp. A $2600 ir is a better comparison

Well, I know its not quite the same comparison but if you are holding the same PSI, tank size, and same CFM ratings I am unsure if you would miss the extra 2 HP or not. I guess it might come down to run time? I'm no compressor expert by far. To be honest I am stuck using a crappy HF piece of garbage until I burn it up or blow it up (and lord knows I have put it through the ringer but it just won't die, lol).

Snap On has a Baldor motor and runs at 72dB, 23.5 SCFM @ 175psi.

DeWalt no-name motor, 84db, 17.0 CFM @ 175 psi.

The SnapOn is worth every penny more, he got a great deal at 1900.

I'm super happy with it. It will most likely last as long as I do and at $500 less than the Quincy I was looking at, I couldn't pass it up. It was a cash deal too. He showed up and said he'd make me a deal. 2000 plus tax on the truck account. Cash got it down to 1900 out the door.

 sounds like it went to a good home. My dad bought a 60 gallon from wal mart 25 years ago and it still works like a champ. Never had any sort of maintenance.
