So I picked up this KR555 today. It was wicked cheap but I noticed a few drawers were kinda wonky the way they sat. I figured a few of the drawer slides were messed up, no big deal. I got it home and started pulling drawers and did find a few drawer slides were broke but... some of the channels that hold the slides on the cabinet and the drawer itself aren't broken but worn all the way through!

Will they cover anything under warranty? Being this box is older, how does that work? I didn't get burnt on this deal but kinda more than I thought I was in for. I can weld so with the parts I could make it work I guess. Any suggestions?

Here are some pics. Sorry but I can only attach 1 photo per post on iPad for some reason.

****. I don't think attaching new ones is the biggest concern, I'd drill holes in the replacements, plug weld and grind then sand smooth.

I think the bigger challenge will be getting the broken ones off unless you can clearly see every spot weld.

Sorry not more help but please post a follow up if you tackle this.

I have a 1958 box. A buddy of mine welded those for me. He used a TIG. Do you want me to get some pics? Also I have two new slides I can't use. Not the part that goes on the box but the silver colored part that connects the drawer to the box. I will get the PN for you if you can use them

Oh yeah I forgot this...

The bottom drawer, the big one with the double slides had this. The spot welds busted off.

I'll update if I can get a response.

Where did you get the new channels from? Did you just weld the old ones up?

He just welded the old ones up for me. Broke just like the ones in your pic. It's was because my dad always over loaded the bottom drawer and left it hanging open

I got the slides from snap on. The guy from snap on took a swag on the sliders but he was wrong and I never returned them

Yep, snap on warranties a buddy's box and mine, mine was new but his was bought in the 90s the spot welds around the wheels popped , district rep swapped it for a similar new box,
He ordered a new krl656 as it was the closest to his old box

People can say what they want about the prices of snap on but they know how to take care of a customer, and their boxes are truly lifetime warranty unlike other companies

But in the OP first post he admitted he wasn't the original purchaser...

I guess I can see the reason for the investment, if you keep the box forever. If the warranty doesn't follow the box, then it does not seem smart to buy used.

If you buy used Snap-On will usually help you with something along the lines of a worn out drawer slide or busted lock. A mess like this will more than likely have the warranty applies to original owner card played real quick.

Again, who has a receipt from 1983?

Prove I'm not the original owner...

Out of curiosity, what is "wicked cheap"? Did you get the matching top box? How many drawers out of the 8/9 have an issue?

A few options, as I have been down this road before and the reason why I always carry a flashlight and drawer removal tool when going to look at a friction slide box.

A) You can try the warranty route. Good luck.
B) Cut the spot welds, take measurements, drawer it up and go to a sheet metal shop, have them fold you a new one and then weld it on in place of the old one.
C) Convert it to ball bearing slides. This gets pretty expensive and tricky as you need to use thin ball bearing slides and getting them mounted coplanar so they won't bind. I have a trick for this if you do go down this route.

Depending on the overall condition of the box, your need/plans for the box, how many drawers have problems and initial investment option C would be my choice.

The new year seems to have brought you a plethora of boxes.

I already had the matching top from my last deal (different year), so I thought it would be nice to have a top bottom combo unit

2 drawer guides are messed up.

3 of the slide guides on the cabinet are screwed.

I paid $100...

But I found a couple screwdrivers, a wrench, and a $20 bill when I took the bottom drawer out.

I also got a KR-274A side cabinet with it and an ATD TOOLS 26" top box and middle riser.

Option D) send it packing on CL to somebody who want to have a Snap-on box in their garage for cheap.

Even if S-O is of limited/no help, that is not that difficult a repair to make. The spot welds look fairly obvious, so you can drill them with a spot buster and remove that channel. Make new ones using flat stock with bevelled edges as an anvil. Plug weld in place, paint and you're done. You probably won't have to grind away your welds (lots of clearance). Use a least 18 Ga.

I'm not afraid of a little metal work. I was honestly just curious as to how/if SO would do anything or if anybody has had this happen before.

I'll probably end up making some as you suggest. I'll still need a couple slides however.

What is the length of the slides?
