Snap-on Dual 80 or High strength ratchets?

First off, I have to say that I am really psyched to have stumbled onto this forum. I'm currently in the middle of planning a career change and will be wrenching full time come this fall. It is great to see that there are a lot of others out there that are passionate about their careers and hobbies and enjoy discussing them in their free time. It also just so happens that I have a tool fetish that needs to be sated on a regular basis.

So anyway, down to business...

I've been doing a lot of research and am putting together a shopping list. My biggest goals are to buy quality tools that will one; last many years of daily use, and two; increase efficiency and productivity as much as possible. I know that I want some new snap-on ratchets but am currently debating between the Dual 80s series ratchets with the 4.5 degree action and the high strength sealed ratchets with the 10 degree action. I know that many of you use these tools on a daily basis and am hoping that you can give me some feedback.

Thanks,
Pete

I have a lightly used F936... and I would love to trade it up for one of the new 80s (if that tells you anything).

I knew that I would find others on this forum that operate on similar wavelengths.

No seriously...I'm looking for a tool with a quality action and longevity.

Snap-On's 80 tooths are king right now. I have a F80, FX80, and FHL80. I also have their 1/4" 72-tooth version of their 3/8 ratchets. All excellent.

I just bought the F80 and it is nice, you almost can't feel it click the clicks are so small. I was surprised to see the cover was not sealed like my F830.

I recently purchased the FX80 and after a few days with that in my toolbox every other 3/8ths drive ratchet came home. I wouldn't want to use any other ratchet now.

Thanks for all the input. I'm definitely going to put the Dual 80 on my list.

As for the avatar...
Audi Quattro it is. I think it's one of the earlier spec B cars before they came out with the full aero body kit. I can only imagine catching big air in a 400+ horsepower all wheel drive monster. Here is some classic footage for those of you that like high speed action and don't mind a little **** rock.

The F936 is the same way; it has always puzzled me as to why they would delete the cover seal.

Because they do not leak thru that. They do tend to seap around the ratchet head though. All of them f830 f936 and f80.

Here are some pictures I took of the inside of my F80. I did not get all too ambitious and take it fully apart yet but I will eventually.

That "bird" spring they have in there is the key, I think. I haven't opened up many different branded ratchets. Is other brand's floating pawls use this same spring design, it's just SO optimized it?

I love my f80. My two other 936s are alwyas kinda of a let down when I reach for a ratchet and grab one of those. Makes me search for the f80 to use asap.

deafautotech talks about his flf80 all teh time. He really makes me want to get one!

none of my 936's oozed.........maybe i wasn't stroking them right :lol_hitti

I agree, mine has never oozzed and I stroked the hell out of it last night. I did however notice it got a little stiffer than normal.

Seriously, mine has never leaked any lubrication.

When I got my new FLF936, grease would ooz out from around the square drive; so I'd say it's normal.

PS. I don't get to use the word ooz very often. :)

My 936 did the same thing. I called someone at Snap On corporate and they told me it was normal... mine probably was just a little "overgreased" from teh factory.

Anyone have a pic of the Proto Big Dawg innards handy taht we can compare to teh F80?

I haven't bought an 80 tooth ratchet yet but have tried them and really like them. I did buy a 72 tooth 1/4" drive ratchet the other day and love it. I think I am going to trade in my 3/8"s ratchets and buy the 80's next week.

Weren't tryin to ruffle anyone's feathers about bimmer dudes in here. just noticed a "couple" of the names. anyway its the "tools" that matter right. about the F80; is the non sealed cover a big concern? ive always heard the Snappy guys will rebuild the ratchets if u have a problem. do they make a special lube?

No problem. Spoken by one of the Corvette guys,

I wouldn't hesitate to buy that Snap On ratchet - seal or no seal. And yes, any Snap On rep worth his salt will rebuild that ratchet for you.

Are there certain ratchets that will take more abuse/torque going through them based on the tooth count or does that come mainly from the materials the parts are made of ?
