If you want the best of all worlds check out the Matco zero degree long ratcheting box wrenches. Snap On does not offer these yet, but they are coming.

Makes sense; that's what I figured.

That would be nice, if you don't mind. We do not have any SO HP pics on this thread yet. The pics on SO's website are not very good. :(

Sure, I understand, I wish all the brands had high res shots of their stuff. As much as the Sears site *****, the zoom feature they have (when it is working) is nice.

Let me know if there is anything specifc you want to see...I can throw in some other wrenches for comparison as well. (like a standard SO combo to compare the HP box beam to a standard SO beam and have the cornwell there too.)

rgates - At least in my 07/08 catalog, they are only offered in 10mm-15mm in the high performance long beams...and the fixed end is 15 degree offset.

Any word on when the SO version is coming out?

I have the GearWrench branded SAE set. I believe the Matco's are the same exact wrenches, just stamped with a different logo. Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

All three wrenches would be great. I would like to compare beam width and box end thickness. Also, do the SO's have sharp or rounded beam edges?

Are the handle edges nicely rounded? :D

Yes. There are some members on this site who have commented on the Mac Knuckle Savers and how they are slightly thicker that the Snappys and that is why the like them. I do not have any Mac KS2. The Cornwell wrenches are a little thicker than my Snappys and that makes them slightly more comfortable on the hands.

Even though the sale has passed, do you think he would still consider selling the metric set for $250? If so, I think I would have to jump at that deal. At $250, the Cornwell set is not only more complete than the SO set, but also less coin. And they are longer. :D

I sent you a PM with my dealers info. I will ask him on Monday.

* Extra long beam for increased access
* Sizes included are 10mm-19mm

Snap On has some new engineering they are putting into there new o degree set. No word on when, but it is coming.

Hmmm...I wonder if a Cornwell dealer would do a group buy on these...perhaps also the XL metric combos?

If there was an interest I would ask my dealer. BB26 appears to want a set and I am going to ask on Monday if my dealer will do the 250.00 on the metric set for him. Let me know if you also want me to ask for you.

Thanks rgates, those are not in my 2007/2008 matco catalog. Guess I need to get a new one Monday.

BB26....let me know if you need some measurements from my calipers on beam width or box diameter.

Some observations...

The cornwell, I think, in my hands in the nicest to handle. It doesn't seem vastly thicker in the beam in this size (the difference more noticeable in the larger sizes IMO)

Notice on the higher performance wrench, where the beam terminates into the box the beam flares up higher on the box end. This may have some advantages strength wise. This is really noticeable in the next to last picture.

Makes me wish that we had a Cornwell dealer here in Sonoma County, last time I saw a CornWell dealer here was in 1993....... I was in sixth grade.

Not a GearWrench brand, nor does it have any affiliation with Danaher. As far as I can tell, any ratcheting wrench utilizing a set screw for the gear pawl is a product of Kabo. Their products are also found in Blue Point/Snap-on, Mac Edge, and SK.

I originally thought rgates was referring to the top set in this Matco link, which is a Danaher product and the same as my Gearbox set.

My GearWrench set: http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/p-2714-k-d-tools-85998.aspx

I have the SK XXL flex sets in SAE and Metric so I am familiar with the design he was actually talking about.

When I pulled up the page from Matco with Part#: SRFBZXLM102T two items show up and I was referring to both of them:

Your SK set is also from the same company. Nice set BTW.

This set looks like it is more of a direct comparison to the standard HP box / box. I think they are 0 degrees on both ends of the wrench rather than 15 degree on the fixed box end.

sgrbzxlm102.jpg

The matco webpage doesn't list the lengths, but I would be curious about how long they are:

Zero degree offset box end for reaching hard to access fasteners.
Extra Long Beam length helps reach where standard wrenches will not
Fine tooth ratcheting box end provides small swing arc for fastener engagement
Sizes: 10mm - 19mm

Part#: SGRBZXLM102 Price: $318.45

http://www.matcotools.com/Catalog/toolcatalog.jsp?cattype=T&cat=2539&select=&page=3

SAE:

9 PC 0 DEG OFF RATCH WREN SET

Zero Degree offset box end for reaching hard to access fasteners
Extra long beam length helps reach where standard wrenches will not reach.
Fine tooth ratcheting box end provides small swing arch for fastener engagement.
Sizes 5/16" - 3/4"
[set details]

Part#: SGRBZXL92 Price: $286.05

I contacted my Cornwell Dealer this morning and he said that he would sell the metric set for 275.00 and he could have them drop shipped to your home. He also said that he would have to charge sales tax. I do not think this is much of a deal. If it was me I would wait for them to go on sale again and buy them at the 225.00 price. If you are interested in SAE that set is on sale this month for 150.00, normally 200.00. Sorry guys, I thought he would do much better on the price.

I am going to hold off until they go on sale again. IMO, a $50 savings is worth waiting for. A big thanks to bushhawg for checking into this for us. For now, I still live in envy of his wrench set.

I have only been dealing with the Cornwell guy for three months now. He said these sets go on sale at least once a year. I know this ***** but I will post a thread when I see these and other good deals go on sale from Cornwell. There website is pretty up to date and from what I have seen the sale flyer comes out once a month right on time.

It is taking all I can do not to pick up the extra long combo set that is on sale right now.

bush, thanks VERY much for checking on this for us all. I agree that it's unfortunately not much of a deal, so I'll wait. Thanks!

So BB26...this thread contributed to you selecting the cornwells over the SOs?

Absolutely. I have always known that Cornwell makes great tools, but I have never handled them or even seen close up/ high res photos. You guys have made me a believer. I even have an avenue for purchasing them now. :bounce:

In the meantime, I am considering complimenting my future Cornwell set with the 15 degree offset SOs. Or perhaps I should purchase the SAE Cornwell set that is on sale now and sell my Gearbox set. As you can see, I have some serious thinking to do... :)

Figured I would post an update on this. I picked up a lightly used set of the Cornwells last month. I also bought the 15 deg offset SOs from 10-20mm shortly after I started this thread. Some quick comparison notes:

- The SOs have thinner box ends. Thus, they will fit into tighter spaces.

- The SO shanks are wider and thinner than the Cornwells. The handle edges on the SOs are also rather sharp, versus the nicely rounded edges on the Cornwells. IMO, the Cornwells are far more comfortable to use.

- The SOs are shorter than the Cornwells by an inch or so in most sizes. Depending on your perspective/use, you may prefer more or less length. I say the longer the better.

- The box end ring is centered on the Cornwell wrenches versus extending completely below the shank on the SOs. Thus, the SOs may provide a little more knuckle clearance.

- The fit/finish is slightly better on the SOs. The Cornwells have some slight imperfections that are purely aesthetic and in no way effect tool function, however, the SOs are completely flawless.

- The SOs are more expensive. The 7 pc. Cornwell set is $205 on sale, while the 6 pc. SO set is around $270. The SOs do not go on sale (to my knowledge).

My Conclusion: They are both great wrenches and you will not regret purchasing either one. IMO, the Cornwells are the more comfortable and stronger wrench, but the SOs provide better access in hard to reach areas. If I had to pick one, I would go with the Cornwells, but I love having the SOs in 15 deg offset to go with them.
