I posted this in the vintage toolbox thread, but since posts tend to get buried there, thought I'd post it here as well. This is a Snap On KR 562E I picked up the week before Thanksgiving. 1984 date code. This taco box has been repainted at some point with a darker shade of paint. Not a bad job. I've taken all the drawers out of the box, cleaned and lubed the slides, replacing some where necessary, and put it all back together. All the drawers slide well, though some a bit better than others. This one has ball bearing slides on the bottom drawer of the side, but all the other drawers are friction slide.

The inside of the ball bearing drawer had a lot of surface rust so I cleaned that up and resprayed Sunrise Red which came out nice, but havent made up my mind about repainting any more of it. Right now it's in excellent usable condition.

Lookin' good :D

How did you do the touch up, spray or brush? How did it turn out? I have a few spots I'd like to touch up on a otherwise really nice box but was unsure of how it might look side by side.

How do you plan on using that box in a garage? Being 3 sided it kinda limits accessibility I'd imagine. Kitchen island maybe?

Just used a Rustoleum spray bomb for the inside of the drawer. Came out really, really nice. I figured I'd go ahead and do it b/c taking the ball bearing drawer out is a little bit of a task. I may do the insides of the other drawers then eventually do the whole box. Just depends how industrious I'm feeling and how much time I can devote to it.

Best use for one of these boxes is either in the middle of the garage, or parked up against a wall where you have access to the side drawers. Of course that will limit your access to the back compartment though.

I have a KR562 from around 1983. I have a KR537 and KR547 plus a KR533 and KR541 on top of my KR562. A friend of mine used to call it the Condominium.

Yea that is why I was curious how do you plan on using it at home? Will you be putting a top box on it?

I thought you were done buying boxes:headscrat

I'm not sure yet...I have the Rick Mears box without a partner. But I like having the workspace on the 562 to set things on. Not shown is a 1/4" thick plastic piece cut to fit for the top that came with it. Little warped, but I'm straightening it out.

Good luck on that, box specific components like drawers and panels are usually best sourced from a donor box or custom made.

Yeah, if I needed replacement doors I'd probably try and fab something up. Even if, and that's a huge if, they're available from Snap On, I'm sure they're an arm and a leg.

Very cool boxes.

How come they were called the "taco wagon"

I think that's the reason. It's an odd configuration, having drawers on the front and side. Throw in the secret compartment in the back, and you've got a very unique toolbox.

From what I've heard, it's meant to be moved aroun a shop and be used as a sort of service cart, a big heavy one at that.

Yes, you are correct. It's not intended to be up against a wall. Though you can do that and access most of the box if you have clearance on the left side for those drawers.

These were also marketed as an aircraft mechanic's box.

I have one of these. It was issued to me at work in the early 80s. We worked in two large experimental garages, the biggest had 120 stalls, so it was needed because we moved around a lot. It had relatively soft wheels and once loaded, it was hard to push, so we changed them out to harder ones. It has a towbar eye on one end. I was lucky enough to be able to take it home when I retired.

I have one of these KR562E roll cabs. I bought it in 1984 used for $1700 and it included several Snap On tools with it. It had a Snap On vise installed as well. I cut a piece of stainless and removed the vise, put down the stainless, and remounted it. I used this box over a 20+ year career as an Airline mechanic and it moved from hangar to hangar several times. Now it sits in my garage at home. I think this summer I'll restore it. I'd like to strip it down, sand, prime, bondo, and paint with automotive quality paint in original color. The slide is broken on the large lower drawer in front so I'll need to seek parts for that. It would be great if roller slides were available as an improvement from Snap On. Maybe someone knows?

I have two kr562b models and am currently looking for a ball bearing slide option as well. Let me know if you find something before me! Also what thickness of stainless did you put on top? I have one butcher block top I like but would really like to do the other stainless like yours.

I had the stainless cut back in 1984 and have no idea what the thickness is. Probably about .100 or so
