When I started out I ran up a high balance on the truck account and slowly paid it down at $50 a week. Now I only get something off the truck if I can pay for it on the spot. I like the whole living life without any debt thing better.
At this point in my life I would never recommend borrowing money, yet I don't really see a way around this starting off as a mechanic. You must have tools, period. Do whatever you have to, to get the tools you need to get you by (aka craftsman) then as you start making money, slowly upgrade and take those craftsman tools to the house
