I have already narrowed down to possibly between the Verus Edge and Solus Legend to buy. My last scanner was the Solus Pro. Yes I know its been fallen off the chart a long time ago. I have been borrowing my dad's for a while and now his scanner is outdated as well. He is now retired from his own shop and I'm still continuing my own business on the side elsewhere. I'm ready to buy a new scanner and get all caught up with technologies. I couldn't find the reviews on any of the Snap On scanner to help make better decisions so I'm trying to gather people's experiences and opinions over the phone and online. Please provide your feedback with your scanner and also what is the most Snap On scanner model that you have seen / heard others have and bought?

I bought a Legend last fall on sale for 2300 dollars off the truck

It is OK, but for a hobbyist like myself it was a big hit

Wrench97 mentioned some stuff about windows based scan tools here. I have "heard" the windows platforms also have more issues with failures, but that's hearsay.

Do you have a scope? If not, what is the cost of a scope/laptop? IMO you "need" a scope, but do you use one? If you're comparing scanner function alone, the Verus graphs more PIDs and is wireless. The scan software is incidental between the tools. Verus is a "legacy" platform, although it shares all hardware I can tell with the current Zeus platform. Parts should be available. When I discussed the above deal with my dealer this week, he stated the solus is supposed to stick around a while as the entry level tool to those who don't want or can't afford intelligent diagnostics. Again, hearsay.

Matco / Launch will run circles around Snap-on.

All scan tools will always let you down. Having multiple seems to be the only option. Issue with the launch/autel route is until recently with the 909+ models, Autel had a rep for a mediocre add-on scope, launch didn't have one.

I run a Solus Legend, Autel906, and a laptop with a 4425 Pico. And my old gen1 4 channel lab scope Modis mostly for quick scope use, and rare OBDI.

How so? Every scan tool has pro's and con's. My experience with Launch has been nothing but negative beyond their basic code reader.
The most glaring problem with Snap-on is that they’re a couple years behind in terms of vehicle coverage. That might be OK if you work at an independent mechanical shop, but it’s useless for dealerships and bodyshops because they regularly see brand new cars.

Anecdotally, I haven’t found any bidirectional controls that my Launch tool lacked but were present in my Snap-on tool; in fact, I have only ever found the opposite.

All this and the Snap-on tool will cost significantly more in terms of both upfront cost and update costs.

Interesting. I've been out of the shop environment since 2019. The newest vehicle I've touched since is probably 2017. So I've not experienced a lack of coverage for newer models. I do have the earlier 2021 update (21.2) on my Solus Edge though.

I've been wanting to try the more expensive Autel scanners, the MK808/MX808. I don't care about Bluetooth or any of that ****.

Launch has just left a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak. Last tool I had from them was a CR129 or something like that, cost's about $250 and besides auto VIN not working, the first time I used it I thought it fried my PCM/ECM/TCM. Far as I can tell it didn't cause any damage but I never used it again.

I've been meaning to talk to my dealer about upgrading to the Apollo, or maybe just selling the Solus and buying an Autel. Not sure yet.

Why get an apollo when you already own a solus? It's the same tool just with intelligent diagnostic added.

Usually my autel kills snap on in EVAP system control. Autel is faster to reset CBS (and easier to read) on a BMW, but the snap on auto ids faster. IMO snap on graphs better than my 906, but beware of auto ranging scales. Obviously snap on has troubleshooter in its favor, but for euros like VAG autel will have built in test plans and more code data right in the codes.menu.

Snap on is "easier" to navigate as they make all the menus between brands similar. I dislike this.

IMO, if you want/need full 2022 coverage it wouldn't be a bad idea to just rent OE diagnostic tooling with a J box when needed. My autel and snap on keep me new enough for aftermarket repair, but I dont fix stuff still under bumper to bumper warranty either.

I was talking to my dealer this week about scan tools. Now I know he likely does not know all of the ins and outs, but he did say some interesting stuff that I have not been able to research.

Part of what he said is the newer vehicles, the manufacturers are are starting to go to a cloud based system of some kind. He said you would still have the ability to look at data and codes, but being able to do anything with that will not happen.

He mentioned that most Chrysler products newer than 2018 are doing this already. He mentioned you will not see troubleshooter listed for them. I can not say I have tried to get into anything that new on the dodge platform, but I didn't see a troubleshooter listed in a 2016 nissan versa that I hooked up yesterday.

He talked about snap on having an agreement with some company that the major manufacturers all dealt with. It was something about a $50 fee to be able to access this cloud to be able to perform procedures.

I get it, he is a tool dealer and likely may not know exactly what he is talking about when it gets into scan tools. But when you sort of start thinking about it, snap on owns mitchell. Which is one of the biggest players in the information systems, you could see where they would maybe want to have a better path of diagnostics for the professional.

Snap on, launch, autel, and Bosch all have subscription available for about 50/year to bypass the FCA secure gateway.

Not sure about the nissan gateway. For FCA, there are other ways into the system if need be. But for 50 bucks just pay the fee and move on.

It sounds like you don't use a scope. If you are not interested in or have plans to start using the scope features, then I would go with the Solus.

I have a SnapOn Solus Edge at the school shop. Bought it 6 or 7 years ago. Just got an update card for it from the commercial/education rep. Why not just update the scanner you have?
