Is it just mine or do all of these 1/4" SO ratchets not actually lock the socket? My common use THRLF has pretty much gotten to the point where its weaker than a non-QR as far as retention goes and my seldom use TRF/TR72s also let you pull the socket right off without touching the button.

Its not my sockets, tried Snap-On, MAC, and SK and they all do it. Looks like they designed the QR mechanism in such a way that when the ball is forced down the button also auto-depresses. Basically its worthless.

3/8 and 1/2 drive are unaffected. I was going to get a second THRLF and one of the new THRLLFs but now im on the fence.

It all depends on how much slope is in the quick release mechanism. If there is a lot of room (sloppy machining or tolerance standards) on the post that moves up to allow the ball to fall in, the ball will fall in without even pressing the button to actuate the bar. I've seen these on a few quick releases before.

Only solution is a new rebuild kit/ratchet.

For all the hoo-ha about Snap On and paying for better quality control (or them being the standard for quality), they have their own issues just like every other tool company. I dislike the T72 Snap On ratchets because of their mechanism in general, but love the F80 and S80 (and variants).

I have a TR72 and the quick release works fine. I've used it with Craftsman, Ko-ken & Facom sockets with no issues...

Not unless there was some issue that was corrected. As stated I have 3 of these of various production dates and all do it.
They all did it new, or after a time of being used?

I had one I bought used that wouldn't hold on to sockets. Put a rebuild kit in it and no issues since, use it every damn day.

Maybe Skin got unlucky? 3 bad ones in a row..... Seems like something their QC should verify before leaving the factory.

So you two have 1/4" drive T72s and when the socket is on you absolutely cannot pull it off without pressing the button?

Yes, the socket/extension locks on and doesn't come off without the button being pushed. Mine works fine between sockets and extensions I have from Snap-on, Williams (USA & Taiwan), Craftsman, Gearwrench, MAC, etc.

I'm sure I could get one off if I really wrestled, hammered or pried at it, but nothing comes off with it locked in with regular use.
