I ordered a couple of cans of Snap-On tool box RED paint 3 weeks ago from the local Snap-On dealer, and it still hasn't come. No excuses or explanation, just said that it is on order and they haven't shipped it yet. I want to paint the boxes while I have time now, but haven't been able to find the correct color paint. If you know of a substitute for the Snap-On RED paint, please let me know. My wife went to Sherwin Williams today and picked up can of what they call Safety Red, but it is too deep of a red. The Snap-On RED has a orange tint to it. I am even toying with taking a ride into the big city and seeing if any of the auto paint stores can match it and put it up in a few spray cans for me. I was told of one place that does this, but they have a 6 can minimum. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Junk

Junk - I found the PPG paint code for the Snap On red was (PPG 73219). I never bought any or saw the actual paint in person, as I sold the box I was going to use it on to a buddy of mine.

A couple of weeks ago, I did redo a little SK box that I picked up in the Safety Red, and it turned out pretty good. I just shot it straight out of a rattlecan, and the only prep I did was to remove the hardware. Not Snap On red for sure, but not a bad shade either.

"car-nut" here on the board is a paint tech rep for PPG - maybe he can find out how to get that PPG color for you.

I don't know where in Northeast, CT you are - but he's in Suffield or West Suffield.

Any paint jobber that sells PPG can mix that paint for you. Most likely it will be in a 2 part single stage urethane, and will need to be sprayed with a paint gun.

My Snap-On RED paint arrived this morning, and I decided to do some painting. The color match is perfect, which in itself surprises me, since the box was made in 1973 and the paint was just made in March 07. So far, I have painted 3 small drawer fronts and it looks good. Will have to spend a lot of time preparing the rest of the drawer fronts, since they were all covered with masking tape. Once I get them cleaned, primed, and painted, I will post a picture. Painting the actual box itself is going to take a lot longer, since it will need a lot more work first.

I got the part number from Snap-On and ordered it from the local Snap-On dealer that stops at a friends shop. They are 12 oz. rattle cans.

I have been making slow progress on the box painting. After a lot of fighting, I got all the masking tape off the fronts of the drawers, and have started painting them. After I paint a drawer, I put it back so it doesn't get scratched. Once I get all the drawers finished, I will start on the box itself. That is going to take a lot of work, since it is in such poor condition. I am inclined to just painting it and leaving the battle scars in tack. Somehow, I don't think that it is worth spending a lot of time doing body work on a 1973 tool box. Here is what it looked like when I picked it up. I found some casters for it while digging around in the garage. I hope to finish it by the end of the month. I have the $10 box that I got last week that also needs paint, so that one will be next.
