I don't understand what the big secret is, it's really simple, if you have friends who are tool truck drivers for a living, have them over, grill out, give them some awesome micro brewed beer, and after a few, they will tell you what their cost is on tools!

For hand tools mark-up was 30% but that was a long long time ago. I think they're down to 20-25% markup now. You can see why the guy isn't in a hurry to make 5-10% profit, doesn't matter if its on $500 or $5000. You may not mean to but it gets insulting once you start trying to deal the guy out of profit almost entirely especially if you start flinging threats of buying from ebay or "finding another dealer".

The business model is catered around financing and big ticket diagnostic equipment/tool boxes which carry much healthier margins which is also why there is more room to deal.

Nobody said anything about SO credit. The big discount for cash is what the driver would be saving.

CC transaction fees are down to a mere 2%. There is no incentive to give someone a "big discount" for cash anymore.

Listen to this guy, closest thus far out of all the posts. margins on scan tools and tool boxes are less than hand tools, although they are on promo more often.

On a side note to those that buy Snap On outside of a dealer network. I returned some items to Snap On via the USPS. I was asked by the person on the phone if I was the original purchaser. I am and everything was ok. I wonder what would have happened if I said no.

That's what I meant, margin for Snap-On hence why they offer steep discounts to dealers to move big ticket products and other incentives for customers who finance directly.

He forgot! He is in his 70's, worked as a mechanic in the 60's he says! look at his other thread. I already told him I see it all as fake.... He won't so, I guess ignore feature may be in order soon. :spit: I have not even been on here long, alot of good posts, and alot of this........ oh well!

I am NOT in my 70's, and I did turn wrenches in the 1960's, started out with oil changes, distributor caps, rotors, alternators, radiators at age 7

I would climb all of the way inside the engine compartment and sit down to work, my Dad gave me cheater pipes he made to fit flex handles, as there were no long handled ratchets back then. I had to have the cheater pipes for some of the large fasteners.

There is nothing fake about me whatsoever, I am in my mid-50's, and I stand behind anything I have written on GJ - you probably should not categorize people you don't know, it can make you look silly after the fact! ;)

1960 was 54 years ago! Even if it was say 1965 instead of 1960, you were 5, and smoking and wrenching! lol Age 7.... you said! Sure thing!

100% markup? What are you drinkin'?

I bet he got that info off one of his intellectual forums that he visits... Sorry Cowboy I've been waiting to use that one, ever since you posted it up.

and I said "everyone smoked" (but not me, of course, although I did get a ton of second hand smoke!.......ugh!)

I am spending FIVE THOUSAND freaking dollars for tools and you are saying I have to kiss the tool truck guys ***? SCREW THAT! To the OP if you want to spend your time traveling to far away localities sucking up to tool truck drivers so that they will take your hard earned money, I say enjoy.

I would strongly recommend that you look at purchasing some high quality German tools, online, that you could have delivered to your door at a significant discount. Tools like Hazet, Stahlwille, Gedore and others for a start.

Absolutely Not.. No ne is forcing you or the Op to shop with a snap on truck, He can either pay full price via the web, buy from the secondary market or simply choose another brand or avenue.

Most everything I'm buying is 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive standard and metric impact sockets sets with a couple of the odd larger sockets, and couple of puller kits. If any of you in here are within 50 miles of Wilson, please shoot me the name and number of a dealer please. If I get them from your dealer I'll take your pizza order and have pizza delivered to your house or job if that's an option, I'll call it in and pay with a CC. Works pretty good. Does that sound fair? Don't say anything to your dealer as some do swap info with other dealers from what I've seen.

Exactly my point. The guys that think they can wave a fist full of dollars at a dealer and demand big discounts are dreaming.

I started to purchase a Snap-On franchise about 4 years ago. I'm glad I didn't. There's no way I'd have the patience to deal with some of you.

To get 10% off on hand tools is a fair deal. Trust me, I've purchased enough to know!

Well you sure didn't learn much in that time... I call BS on this ****. Your attitude says 16 maybe 17 years old. Might be time to start another account. Maybe someone will take you seriously again. A grown-*** man doesn't spend every waking moment complaining about how he couldn't get a 20 year old wrench warrantied for cosmetic reasons. He doesn't then sell off every perfectly usable tool he owns made by that company just to spite them. That's childish. Sorry man...

Sorry, but speaking for myself and probably several others on this site, it is very tough to believe someone when, in one post that person says:

"About 20 years ago I decide to treat myself to some Snap-On sockets and wrenches -even though it is 8 to 10 times the price, they also have the lifetime warranty and perhaps are made better."

and then later in the same post, contradicts themselves by saying:

"Naah - I won't be loosing any money at all, I bought them at pawn shops, flea markets and ebay originally, and they have appreciated over the last 15-20 years."

Why do I want to believe you now?

For those who are nore sure what I am talking about, go to this post:

I wish you guys understood the difference between margin and markup. 100% markup is only 50% margin. I don't think the SO model could survive a 20-25% markup (16-20% margin).

On another note, I can ignore Cowboy Wilde, but I am not quite ready to ignore all the people who quote him and bicker with him, it's not worth it guys! If this keeps up I may have to ignore the whole forum.

33% markup/25% margin, at least in the OP's case. There are other untold variables that affect these numbers, but that's what you all should assume it is on most everything thats not on active promo.

I respect your efforts to explain the operations of a Snap-On Dealer...... I am totally amazed at the mass of people who consider themselves "better acquainted" with your operation.
