I am no longer a professional automotive technician. I do however perform lots of different repairs for myself and paying customers. I currently have a cranberry snap on krl 1001 with a stainless work top and matching cover. For a 16 year old box,the thing is in great condition. Unfortunately, it is packed to the gills.the top is covered with tools and so is my cart.I have a good snap on rep who offered me $5,500 trade value. I was surprised that he valued it that high.He suggested I upgrade to an epiq in some configuration. I'm more interested in a masters series with a hutch and locker.any advice would be appreciated. I'm.only considering snap on by the way.

I would make sure to that the snap on dealer is screwing you on the sale price of the new box before I would be bragging on the trade in value.

Re- posted - my advice is to consider another brand of box..

$3,000 shipped.. Only $2,000 w/o the lockers... I'd find that pretty hard to ignore considering you can sell your current box. The fleet mechanics at Verizon are given Extreme boxes. They have no complaints.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
I'd give you $350 for it. After all, its Cranberry, and you KNOW they have no resale value whatsoever... ESPECIALLY being SO. Gads and heavens...

I would love an Epiq and I'd love a Positive Tool Control System (maybe I'd stop losing tools!!) but being out of the trades, into others (for now), if I had a good box, WHY would you think about getting rid of it. It's a legacy to pass down!

There's an old saying - if it works, DON'T fix it!!!!

Just my thoughts!!! (And personally - I like SO Cranberry... Just saying....)

I would get a vidmar or lista locker or something like that. I picked a few up locally on CL. I would not trade it in and get a new box and a new payment when your box is nice.

If you have some more room you could add like a KRSC46 cart that adds quite a lot of space or some sort of KRA box. If you wait till the big discount on the KRL or EPIQ boxes come and they give you $5500 it is not a terrible deal, they are still making money on it of course that's why you need it in their eyes, but an 84 EPIQ has got a lot of room

It's more a personal decision, do you want to spent a few thouand on a new upgrade or spend a couple thousand on a new cart, obviously you could also wait out craigslist for another cranberry box used when one shows up and add to your collection

Sounds like your dealer is willing to deal. Of course he's going to make a profit, that's why he's in business and you want him to stay in business. If you do trade up, don't get a box that is as big as you think you need, get one that is a lot bigger than that. If you have the room for it get the biggest bottom you can and down the road if you need to you can put a top on it, end cabs etc. I'm with you on buying snap-on, your 15 year old box is still worth 5500 on trade, one of the cheaper box's would be worth zero after 15 years. You'll never regret buying a quality product, you might grumble about the price.

If you are working out of your own shop, I would get a couple of lockers for the big bulky items. If you need more drawers buy a good tool cart. If I moved into my own shop again I would do just that.

It sounds like it's only worth $5500 towards a trade in on an epiq....I don't think that box is worth much more than $1000 outright.

I've seen several people get rid of them for snapon boxes. They aren't really on the same level.

You can get an epiq for 5 grand off the truck of you twist their arm enough

If you trade for new I would buy an epiq over master series, second I wish I still had my 1001, good chance down the road you will also. Have you considered buying another box and putting them side by side? Would be nice to find another cranberry to do that with.

I went to the web sites for Extreme retailers. The boxes look nice, but before I'd spend $3k on a new set of tool boxes, I would want to see, touch and feel

Any snap on box pretty much looses 50% of its value the day it comes off the truck. The prices of the box can be artificially inflated if someone is buying on credit. Check out ebay and craigslist for the box you want, then sell what you have. You wont get 5k for it, but you wont be paying 20k or more either.

That is a nice trade in value. However, have you considered keeping what you have, you say it is in good condition, and adding a second roll away. I also struggled with the decision to get a larger box. I had outgrown my KRA series, but knew I would not get a great price for it. I found a very nice KRL 791/761 on Craigslist. I don't regret keeping the older boxes. I have tons of room now.

IMO, not being in a pro shop everyday making your living off the tools, I would just add-on. Maybe a side box of drawers, or even 2, or just get a top chest to go with it. Color would not be an issue to me - I'd buy a neutral color that looks okay with the existing box and just move on.

Don't get me wrong, 5500 trade is great on that box. Pretty close to what a pro mechanic would have paid for it new (not list price, mind you), but we all know that's the whole shell game they play on new boxes when your are buying something worth more than twice that trade number. New large box arrangement is 20K list, less "good customer" discounts and any promos going on and then a nice fat number for a trade-in that is about double what the box would sell for on the street as used, and you get down to a reasonable price that is a lot less outrageous. That still leaves you shelling out a healthy chunk of change to move up to a bigger box.

I don't think your actually getting $5500. I was just in the same situation my 1001 was worth $2000 in real money. They are inflating your trade in and selling the box at closer to full retail.

I got out of full time wrenching last year and sold my krl7022 on craigslist for a little under 3k. I then got a 68 epic off clist for around 4 I think. Cant really remember. The epic gave me a little more room and knowing that I wasn't doing it for a living anymore I knew I wouldn't be buying a lot more tools. I still buy some but nothing that is going to overflow the box any time soon. I would just add a hutch or sell it yourself and buy something on ebay or clist.

I will say that if I wrenched professionally still I would get rid of the epic and go back to master. I am not a fan of the drawer latches, it would really bug me going in and out of it all day. I prefer the master series. If you are only going to be working on the side I don't know if it makes much sense to get a whole new setup for thousands more when you have a decent base, just add on.

I prefer the KRL to the Epiq just because of the drawer release, but they're both really nice. I like the drawer layout of the KRL1032 the best. There's plenty of room especially if you plan on adding a hutch and locker. He's giving you a nice trade in value at $5,500 so I'm sure he's gonna make you a good deal on the new one too.

When and where are these deals? Online or on the trucks?

People will upgrade for any number of reasons. Many times it's from the peer pressure at work with the, " your stuff ***** cause mine is snap on". Other people will tell you they love the extreme boxes.. It's a great buy and won't cost you as much as a used car. Verizon uses them, and the mechanics aren't exactly know for being easy on tools since they are all paid for, and supplied by the company. They just email what they need and a few days later it shows up. If they can survive a fleet enviornment they should be fine for a non pro too.. You don't always need to buy the most expensive option of everything, but to each their own..

i'm in the "keep what you have and add on" club.

locker for blow molded cases,
side box with drawers for tool space,
cart for added mobility and storage of commonly used tools.
or a top box, doesnt have to be a matching box, but it will add some needed space.

i always just added onto what i already had

If you have not done so I would go look at an Epic and see if you like it. If you do like it go for it, you only live once. I'm going to upgrade one of my rollers someday and an Epic box is at the top.

As others have said look at the total deal. It's kind of like buying a car. They give you such a big trade in to make you happy then you end up paying more for the car, may be a wash in the end, maybe not. If your box is filled with blow molded cases maybe get some cabinets if that's appropriate for where you're using it.

Just last week the rock n roll toolbox salesman offered me 4000 for my krl1001 and 1500 for the top chest for an epiq. I think 5 or so is there magic number for trades and he wouldn't tell me where they even go.
I tried of course to just buy dual used lockers but he only makes money on new ****. It's up to you but those epiqs are nice.

I originally wanted to add a hutch and locker to this box.I still really like the cranberry color and am told it's no longer available. It ***** because I think it's an awesome color. This 1001 is packed full, the top is covered with cased tools and my snap on poly cart is also packed. I still prefer the masters to the epiq series. Really not sure where to go at this point. Thanks for all the input so far.

Get a locker, like a gladiator or something for the cases. I was finding them on craiglist in not perfect condition for less than a hundred bucks. Cut some sob to reinforce the shelfs and bingo.

Buy a used hutch and locker and have them painted. I believe snap on uses standard paint numbers and can be gotten in a automotive paint supply store.

Stick with Snap On I have a taco cart close to 40 years and can still get the slides. All the drawers lived overloaded and it was a great box, now it just has fabrication tools in it. I am trying to overload my KRL 1033 & 1032 and even my SO guy was shocked at how many c-clamps I hand packed in drawers.

Had tried other boxes and none held up. And there were not in commercial shops. I own the Alum Montuzuma travel box but that has no drawers but makes an excellent track side box as it weighs 41lbs empty.

An alternate reality in a parallel universe.
My vote would be to buy aother used cranberry KRL1001 or KRL1003, I've seen three ised KRL1003's on craigslist in mint condition in the last year. Having KRL1001B in black and bave been looking for a KRL1201 in black, I think your biggest bang for the buck is buying used.

I'm taking the context of this to mean you're in your own shop/garage then? If so, get creative with the storage ideas, it doesn't need to be locked up in a toolbox. Wall storage, or racks, or a home built toolbox riser. Put all the blow molded cases onto a shelf. Condense your sockets and wrenches.

Pictures of your setup might help us give more suggestions.
