The forum hasn't "turned into" anything. Web forums are fluid, flowing this way and that as members come and go. This section has always been about tools, which is a broad topic covering all types of implements. We've got plenty of people walled-up in their fortresses of preference, and plenty more who take-up position in no-man's land. Which side is the most vocal at any given time is bound to change, constantly. Some guys freak out about that and steam off to more familiar-feeling harbors. Oh well.

Can I bash HF if I say my daddy's, uncle's Northern Tool salesman saw the manager of the local HF store banging a goat behind the store after getting drunk on a Friday night? Not only that but the 2 ton cherry picker he was using to hold the goat in place leaked down and let the goat escape?

Lucky for him the HF security cameras didn't work so the regional manager couldn't prove anything despite the fact that the Northern Tools guy saw the whole thing and swore on a stck of chinese translated manuals (that no one could understand) that it was true?

And you heard it from your Matco Dealer right?

Interesting discussion.

I'm all for buying American. I'm also all for spending your money any way you please, and buying the best tool for the job that you can afford. Combined, I think it creates dilemnas for many of us. But when you make your living with tools, I think 'buy American' takes a back seat if there's a better (or better value) tool to get the job done. How many of us would buy a Snap-On 'toolbox jewelry' item when a GearWrench, Williams, Facom, Toptul, Wera, Craftsman, Blue Point, etc. would get the job done and leave enough money in your pocket to also buy dinner for you and your significant other?

The wristwatch tie-in is only somewhat related (do any of us make a living with our wristwatches?), but it's spot-on as far as quality and value is concerned. I've had the same Omega Speedmaster automatic on my wrist for 15 years, and it's been through hell and back because the only time I remove it is when I shower and when it gets in the way of me getting my hand somewhere (say to reach a header fastener). It's been hit with hammers, slammed in knuckle-busters, scraped brutally on concrete walls when moving heavy objects in and out of basements or garages, etc. It still works, keeps execellent time and mostly looks like new. Stainless wrist band is the original. It's only been serviced once, when I was in the ocean with it on for too long untangling a fishing net from a propeller (it's not a Seamaster, it's not waterproof). Omega serviced it for free. I had to wait for it to go to Switzerland and back though; that wouldn't be acceptable for say a torque wrench I use every day.

I don't fuss too much over small drive tools. I like Snap-On's ratchets, but there are many others I like especially when I factor in the cost and the convenience of nearby brick and mortar stores. For me, the only important rule for many drive tools is that I have to have at least 3 working ones at any given time. Two because I need to get at both ends of a fastener, and a third in case one breaks down. Then there's the portable sets I always have with me versus the ones that never leave my garage. Then there's the emergency sets in my vehicles, which, if I'm doing things right in my garage, should never see the light of day. That argues leaning toward the value side on some tools, but the flipside is that for most of us on this board, there's little more satisfying than using a very high quality tool. I'm more likely to be inspired to tackle the honey-do list if I have a tool I really enjoy using versus one that's going to put up a fight.

I have a Snap-On Racing Edition ratcheting screwdriver handle (with the original shafts) that I think is going on 30 years of age. It has been my go-to for decades and still works like new. I can't be alone in finding that I don't know if I really love a tool until it's been through hell and back with me and is still my go-to tool that's never let me down. I'm 44 years old and I still have my Estwing straight-claw framing hammer from my teenage construction years and still use it regularly. There's almost a child-like wonderment at a tool that serves you well for decades and will get passed on to the next generation and probably serve them well for decades.

A related personal tie-in: I don't wrench for a living. I wish I did, but I'm an electrical engineer by degree and have been doing software engineering for almost 20 years. I have been buying Apple pro laptops for about 15 years, even though their operating system has never been a target for my employment. Why? Because versus everything else, they are built like tanks and the operating system just works, always. A tool I use to make a living, so I'm inclined to spend the premium to get something that's very reliable and a pleasure to use. When it comes to your job, time is money. Downtime is loss of money, and frustration has its own costs.

I'll also confess that there are Snap-On ratchets in my chests, and I have the 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" Techwrench torque wrenches (two of which I bought on eBay for a steal in new condition). But I have maybe 5 Snap-On sockets, out of hundreds, and 3 of them are specialty sockets. I have several other brands of ratchets, some of which are as go-to as the Snap-Ons (including the GearWrench teardrops without quick-release).

Tool fetish is a disease, but I can think of worse ailments. :)

A little contrarian thinking here:

While Snap-on hand tools and toolchests are excellent-- industry leaders-- Snap-on often ranks behind other brands outside those two specialities.

For instance, most serious weldors would easily favor a Miller, Lincoln, Hobart or Esab welder over a Snap-on welder.

When it comes to pneumatic tools, Top Cat, Chicago Pneumatic and several other brands will go head-to-head with Snap-on any day.

In the realm of cordless tools, Makita, Dewalt and Milwaukee will hang tough and/or out pace most of Snap-on's cordless offerings.

None of this denigrates Snap-on's quality, but it's naive to make a blanket statement that "Snap-on makes the best tools" period.

There are a lot of good tools out there, and the term "tools" encompasses a diverse range of equipment.

I think the welder is a point of who they chose for as a OEM; I believe they are made by these guys.... Systematics! http://www.800abcweld.com/ The welding industry is a whole world unto itself; with everyone having their favorite brand: Miller, Lincoln, Hobart., etc.
Every company has its great things that they actually make (not by a 3rd party); this is becoming less so as time goes on, many companies such as Mac Tools are making less here..... in general, I think what Snap-On offers are good quality, proven tools. Thats not to say other brands can't compete or in many cases offer the same or better... 3rd party OEM tools for cheaper prices. I think ultimately; Snap-On has strived to be a "total solution" brand and offer everything that the automotive repair industry needs (plus, gov't, aerospace, military etc.); they can sell you electronic manuals (Mitchell1), hand tools, even make a special tool for you that you need to your specs (http://www.snaponspecialproducts.com/standardmod.html), all the way to full customized tool inventory, storage systems and shop equipment...
I agree with the above; hard line/toolboxes are excellent.
Air tools; I've found their classic and newer designs to be great.... FAR25, FAR72/7200, PDR5A, PDR3A, PH3050A, etc. Impacts; seems allot of the older ones were ok but newer models seem to get good reviews.... I really like my IR with composite body, very powerful and light! :)

Snap On makes a smoke machine to check for evap leaks that is way over priced. It also uses special oil which is not cheap.Redline is the better one over the Snap On for a grand and cheapest to use.It uses mineral oil sold at any grocery store which is cheap.Redline is the most popular model out there for smoke machines.Snap On has a hydraulic flaring tool and does not make it.Mastercool makes it for them with the Snap On brand on it

The Date stamp at the bottom is pretty much a dead giveaway, If you look at the Yacht master II you will see that there is a (2nd) Second counter it that location. Can we see a picture of the Back of the Watch?

Fake Yacht Master II

Real Yacht Master II

I hope the guy didnt own you any more than $81 bucks. LOL

Good catch...as soon as I saw the picture I identified it as a fake, too. Plus, there was something fishy with "I haven't worn it in a few years" considering the watch was only released at Basel in 2007...

I own four Snap-On tools, or is it three...

Two GOEX SAE wrenches, 7/16 and 5/16 that has been trimmed down to fit GM side terminals in tight spaces. The other is a TMC-105A medium screwdriver socket with 1/4DR.

The wrenches are nice, and I am trying to amass a complete set now, but the socket, I just picked up today and haven't used.

With that being said, I have used Snap-On tools from ratchets, sockets, screwdrivers, etc and haven't found them to be that superior to other, cheaper options. If I find them at a good price, I will jump on them, but I won't go out of my way to pick them up.

Nah.. 3 appraisers looked at it. Lol... .
I certainly don't claim to be a Rolex expert and I;m not crazy about them, I do trust the three jewelers I took it too. They each took the back off the watch to verify it as real. Wheather it's real or fake I still made money off the deal on the car. I personally don't know much of anything about them but being as I've now read it off the internet I must be wrong about it as well as the three jewelers (one of them a Rolex dealer). I like my Citizen more but I'm sure you will call it a knock off as well. It doesn't matter to me. I made enough on the car to cover the loss on the watch if it was a fake. I'n any case I'm not sweating it. Maybe I should post a photo of my wifes wedding band so you can tell me if it's real or a CZ. Internet experts, lol

Whatever Dude... I do know a little (very Little) bit about Jewelery and Watches as my Aunt owns a Reputable Store and has been in business for around 30 years. I couldnt possibly tell you if your wifes wedding ring is Real or fake over the internet but Bring it in and ill tell you. Im curious to how you made money off a Fake Rolex? Did the guy owe you $80 dollars or $30K? Its all about Credibility Man... Its amazing how many people try to be something more than they are on the internet. I find it hilarious that "Everything" you associated with is Bigger than Life, whether its Tools, Big Blocks just lying around rolling on HF Dollies etc.. etc... etc... Im Done talking about it, but restassured Your Rolex is Fake and you should be contacting a Lawyer to recoup the money you didnt lose. There's a Reason they didnt put Date's on Seamans watches and theres a Nautical reason theres 2 Second hands if i Recall.

I haven't made any money on the watch, i made money on the car. How can chevy blocks be bigger than life?? They are bare blocks I use for spare engines for my race car on cheap HF dollies. They are not completed engines but even if they were what what be bigger than life about that. How can my Duralast ratchets be "Bigger than life"? You really need to go back and read things more carefully before you read so much into them. I've never tried to be something I'm not over the internet. I'm just a retired wrench who is currently in poor health. I can think of a lot better things I would want to portray myself as. As far as the watch goes it really doesn't matter. If it is fake I got hosed just a little but it's nothing in the grand scheme of things. How you come up with this Bigger than life thing I don't have a clue.

Your problem is you assume to much and read to little. You see the worst in everyone without reading what was really said. That type of mentality just makes you look like some high and mighty know it all. Just because you feel superior to everyone else doesn't make it so. What you lack in reading comprehesion you more than make up for in your self righteous attitude. Like a preacher once told me. "If you dig for a booger long enough youll find it".

That is the Biggest Load of ****, I dont feel superior to anyone here, I sure and Hell dont know it All and as far as Reading Comprenhension i Never said a Damn thing about Duralast Ratchets. My Knowledgable subjects include Hydraulic Jacks, Tool Values and Railroading all of which i glady trade here for Other Knowledge from Other Members. If i dont know something about a subject, I keep my mouth shut and try and Learn, I dont run off at the Mouth just to hear myself talk. How you can go from:

I took the Rolex as partial trade on a 67 GTO I built some years ago.

To being its Ok that its only worth $80 bucks ?

Im just gonna let this Die because obviously i didnt learn from the Nolatoolguy ordeal and i pushed to hard. Thats all i have to say on the matter, Im not gonna argue anymore. I think you should contact your Jeweler and send your watch into Rolex to get it Authenticated for down the Road. I posted your picture in a Popular Rolex forum for some further Clarification and maybe these guys can assist you.

Again you didn't read I said I made money off the car with or without the rolex. Why should I sweat it now? It's a done deal and nothing I can do about it now even IF it is fake. I have bigger thinngs to worry about. I guess you need to spend a bunch of your spare time to prove me wrong. Even if it's true it was my mistake and the mistake of others I consulted. I wasn't here trying to sell it or rip someone off. Anybody who would even consider it's purchace I would insist they have it authenticated before buying it. If it in fact was only worth 80 dollars it won't be the worst thing that ever happened to me. Maybe you need to go back and read your own post to see what I was talking about. You made it out like everything I say is blown out of proportion. I guess you come to judgement so quickly you don't even realize it. I still don't understand about the engine blocks on dollys. I buy used big block chevys strip them and prep the blocks and have them ready to build. Don't understand how that could be "Blown out of proportion". I guess I don't understand such a superior mind, lol

snap on makes the best ratchet in my opinion but when something is broke and you cant get it fixed it is no good a broken snap on is still worth more than a craftsman to me

"Anyway is there any good on-line Snap-On dealers that you can recommend and would ship stuff to Australia. Even on a bad day USA Prices are at least half what they try and charge us down here..."

Hello. Newbie here. I pasted the comment above someone made because I may be ending up with a truckload (literally) of Snap-On, SK, and Mac tools and tool chests as a result of a tools plus cash trade deal. I don't need all that I will be getting, but am thinking of doing the deal and accepting that it may take some time to get all my $ out of the deal by selling off the tools. I will keep some, but already have a respectable set of tools. An older guy who spent a career as a shop owner passed away and has his life career's collection of tools being traded, along with cash, to me in a multi-party deal. My wife and I are very likely going to be moving from here in Arizona, USA, to Brisbane or Hervey Bay. If it makes sense and there is a need for the tools I have, I will get quotes on shipping all of them when we move. I would also consider shipping tools people are interested in purchasing prior to our move this summer. Tomorrow I will be previewing the 5 chests of tools, scan equipment, a/c equipment, etc. Any serious interest? I am told it is a 21 drawer roll cab, a couple of 15 drawer roll cabs, and 3 smaller "portable" top chests, chalk full. Plus the electronic and A/C and "other" misc things that won't fit in toolboxes.

To me the value of Snap On is the service. For a pro, it's probably worth it to know if you break something, Snap On will come to you in the form of a Snap On truck, and warranty your broken tool.

Snap on hand tools are generally the best money can buy. There are a number of Snap On tools that are outsourced from other companies.

Are there Snap On trucks Down Under? If there isn't and your source for warranty is through the mail, then I would look at something other than Snap On...unless you just have to have the best tools money can buy.

Lol Han!

Swill the Koolade much?

Snappy has good stuff and a few average items in the line, just like most of the better brands.

I like Snapper for the easy profits in resale. Using it has not proven to be a life changing experience.

I can buy two to four of the tools I prefer to use for the price of even used Snapper here in Mexico.
I don't worry for service or warrranty because nothing seems to break anymore.

Everybody is entitled to an opinion but after even my short carreer spinning wrenches I have found good stuff from every source. Hands on use and experience only, no hang tag WAGging or youtube veiwing.

But I hope everybody finds the best in thier own hands one day, makes the day go faster when the worker is happy. Whatever thier "best" may be.

Are Snap On tools really that good? Simple answer yes. 30 years ago I was one of those techs who thought that there were other brands out there that were just as good for less money. My family owned a hardware store that sold SK. Almost everything in my toolbox with SK. Still love SK and have many of their tools. However, one day the local Snap On dealer put a Flank Drive Plus wrench in my hand to try for a week. That was the day I learned that Snap On is better. There are other tools that will get the job done but they are NOT just as good. If you want new SO tools at USA prices, hit me up. If you will pay my cost off the truck plus shipping I will be happy to send you all you want.
