As I understand it the Williams brand is Snap on's industrial line. If so, what is the difference. Is it just the finish? Do they carry the same warranty?

Do a search there is all kinds of posts on this subject...depends on what you are comparing, sockets and screwdrivers are supposed to be the same(USA Williams).

You can not warranty Williams on a snap on truck you have to mail them in to Williams.

Things are changing. Some items are the same, some are very close and some are quite different. Design, finish and COO.

I've heard that some of Snap-on's older stock get relabeled as JH Williams (e.g. 2013 Snap-on tool X becomes 2015 JH Williams tool X). Any truth to that?

Not causing trouble but what could they relabel? Most of the tools are stamped.

Williams ratchets are the equal to the older snap on 936 series.

I have the standard and flex head in 1/4 and 3/8". All of them are smooth as butter and built like a tank and were right at $75 shipped for all 4. Both of the standards are so nice that one of the scum bag neighbors decided he wanted them after a night in the garage.

Has williams always been part of Snap on??

Snap-On acquired Williams in 1993 and changed the name to Snap-On Industrial Brands in 2011.

The reason I brought this up was that I acquired a Williams 1" wrench and I can not find another to compare it to. It may be old but it is NOS.

That is a superrench, I got a 1 inch like yours,a 5/8 and 1/2. Might not necessarily be nos, the satin finish of the superrenchs is great, no chrome to chip or rust. Idk when they stopped making them but it is a shame they did. I got some Jh williams older than that but they look like **** in comparison.

AceofSpad3s, They are nos, they were in the tool crib where I worked and were never issued out to anyone.
On another note, Ideal Industries bought SK tools and built a new factory about a mile away from me. I don't know anyone who works there so I don't know if that is their only factory or what they make there.

Scooby, Great site for sure. But the 1170 wrench they show is not the one I have. Mine is also 2 inches longer.
Is the 1170 just a number for a 1" wrench for all brands? The reason I ask is I was looking through my stuff and found a "Fairmount" marked 1170 which looks a lot like the Williams but it is shorter. Also I found a "Armstrong" 1170, it looks more like a Snap on wrench.

That is a JH Williams wrench (pre Snap On). The logo and the wrench shank design is different than the late the 1990's Williams wrenches.

The metal in Williams USA wrenches don't have the same Rockwell number as Snap On. Not saying their bad, just an observation that they are different. Not sure on sockets and extensions, as i don't have any newer Williams sockets.

Sockets are identical, ratchets tend to be older generation (like the 936 series) but still high quality. Screwdrivers are the old style hard handle, which is OK (I prefer the Instincts). Wrenches are different but still excellent, in fact they are my favorite due to the thicker beam profile.

Main thing with Williams is they don't have nearly the selection of Snap On and some of the items are Taiwanese, so if you want US made verify COO before ordering (the catalog will ID US made items). Also expect that warranty may be more difficult.

I have a lot of Williams tools under the Cat label. Good stuff.
