Snap-On will this be warrantied?

I have this Ratchet that the gear slips and you bust your knuckles once in a while.

I don't know if it was my brothers or fathers. I have never delt with snap-on tools and wanted to know what I can do.

As you can see the top has some bangs in it. I am not sure how it happened but will that be a problem with getting it warrantied? Not sure if thats from dropping it or using it like a hammer :( But either way I did not do it. :)

I don't know if I have any snap-on trucks around me but if I see one will they exchange it or do I have to go to their website and or call them up?

You could def call snap on and at least get a repair kit for it to replace the stuff inside. If you aren't sure where you got it then they may refuse the warranty on the whole thing.

shouldn't be an issue. if you don't have a truck you deal with you can contact there customer service thru there website. always works for me, never an issue.

Will not be an issue, more than likely its dirty inside though, take the two screws out and watch for the spring loaded ball.. Disassemble, clean thoroughly and reassemble with a light lubricant ( not WD 40) so long as the racket palls on the racketing portion are all sharp still. This is quite often what the Snap On dealer will do from his truck when he tells you he's "done" the repair.

It looks like that ratchet was made between 1970-1978 and I have one just like it and like it very much. And it's very cool that it has family history behind it.

If those are the years then it was my Dads and he probably bought it when he was a Machinest at Wilsons sporting goods or GM.

Since you're not the original purchaser, the most ethical thing to do would be to buy a rebuild kit for it. And to make the rebuild operation go a lot easier, get the SPP744 special service tool.

My dad is still alive but I doubt he has the receipt and or know where he got it from.

What I do, since i don't have a Snap On Guy. I give the tool to one of my friends that work at a dealer or factory that has a truck stop by. Since these friends spend money regularly with the SO guy they receive top notch service from the salesperson who wants to keep the tech happy with his service. These techs don't get asked for receipts for warranty, at least in my area they are not. Last ratchet that I gave a friend at the dealer, i stopped by a week later and he was given a brand new ratchet.
Now I don't feel bad about doing this because I spent a lot of money with Snap On years ago when I was a dealer tech.

RKRA380 is what you need

For $10.00 + $1.00 for taxes and free shipping not bad for a repair kit.

What is included? everything in the head? If not what else usually goes bad from it slipping?

I am not a ratchet repair man so I am not sure if I will know whats bad inside unless I see something broken :) I know I can swap out the parts no biggie but diagnosing it is another story.

Just call customer service; it will include all the parts except the cover plate. Call them first; if they refuse to send you a kit for free, then buy it. They most likely will send it to you for free; just emphasize that it is your fathers', he bough it off a truck in the 70s and you do not have a dealer that you deal with.

I use a small flathead driver in place of the special tool. I've done 6 or 7 with no problems.

Does anyone know if they still ship in oversized boxes? Like I read they did a few years ago?

If they do I want to place seperate orders I always can use the extra box and packing and need to teach these 100K & up Head of "Whatever" that doesn't care about the company and just his or her wallet.

I wonder why a basic Snap-On ratchet costs around $100.00

I can't even get a job at Walmart but I sure wouldn't waste money shiping stuff like Snap-On does.

My 2 cents. :thumbup:

They have a contract with UPS; probably costs them next to nothing to ships stuff... I believe it is is based on "pieces" rather then weight. That being said; they do have big boxes to ship small things; I can always use the packaging, so I won't complain.

Take it apart and clean and oil it. That cures 90% or more of ratchet probs in my experience.

I just did a 1/4" drive SO rat a couple of days ago. Slipped before, works perfect now.

Alright, let's now talk about how to install the new parts:

1. Dust cover goes in first
2. Bushing goes in on top of duster cover
3. Spring goes in hole
4. Ball goes against spring and is held in place by SPP744.
5. Pawl goes in
6. Gear goes in
7. Oil everything up
8. Cover plate goes on
9. Screws go in
10. Reverse lever goes into the pawl


Note:

Make sure the bushing is seated all the way down tight against the dust cover. If you can rotate the dust cover real easily, that means the bushing is not seated all the way. You may need to strike the bushing with a bushing driver or an old socket.

To install the reverse lever, stack some washers up on each side of the lever to prop up the ratchet body to keep it level. Make sure the reverse lever and ratchet body is resting on a hard surface. With a 1/4 inch diameter pin punch (or larger), strike the end of the reverse lever stem; this will mushroom the end of it so it does't fall out of the pawl. You don't have to strike it very hard. A 12oz. or 16oz. hammer is plenty heavy.

carhouse, any updates?

I cleaned it up & bought some assembly lube. I have been trying to put it back together but am having trouble keeping the ball in place. I did order the tool today but was thinking I wanted to hold off on the repair kit untill I could see if just cleaning it would help or not.

I have slight cerebral palsy on my left side so its being a challenge trying to keep the ball in place and install the Pawl without knocking off the ball.

I can't use a screwdriver to hold it and use my other hand to slip in the the pawl. I can't hold a screwdriver in that hand and do any good with it. All I can do is hold the ratchet in that hand and even then it's hard to keep it still.

I might need my brother to help me on this but I am going to keep at it.

Or does Snap-On sell the spring seperate for a dollar or less shipped :)

I am starting to get the spring messed up, the tip of it is getting bent :mad:

Just ordered the repair kit today. Hopefully it will come with the spring (I believe it should) but their webste does not say what it comes with. :(


I think it should be here Tue or Wed. I will give it another try then and hopefully I don't mess up the spring this time around.

The SPP744 tool is specifically designed to hold the ball in place against the spring until you get the pawl in place. And yes, the kit comes with a new spring.

By golly I'm going to order one of those installer tool things and frame the receipt just so I can show my wife that everything from Snap-On does NOT cost $100.

To show me how easy it is. :)
My brother & I have been trying to get the pawl back in but can't get it in.

Any tips on getting the pawl back in?
We are using the tool to hold down the ball but still no luck.
