Man, I get cold just looking at these pictures! I guess you guys up north just have thicker blood. I love your build, and the fact you are getting it done yourself. Stay safe and remember those extra few minutes spent doing it the right way mean the difference.

SHOPNUT:
I hope I get the roof on soon too. There is a certain amount of irony about shoveling the show out of the shop :headscrat How is the leg healing. It ***** not seeing continuing progress on your shop. Yours has been inspiring me for quite some time now and I realize that I will never finish my shop if I keep looking at yours :)

mws444:
Thanks for droping in and following along. The weather here is getting colder and I would like walls and a rood prior to the weather in January-March. The nice thing about the cold is you can always put on another layer. I try to be safe but accidents like to find me.

Well I rigged up a boom for lifting the trusses with the bobcat. Ity may not be pretty but it works like a charm.

102_0085.jpg

I put up 3 trusses tonight by myself and other than hating hights and having to climb up and down the scaffold 20-30 times everything went well

102_0083.jpg

102_0084.jpg

If the weather stays good and the wind stays down I might get a couple more up tomorrow.

So no progress on the shop tonight and what a story as to why.

So for the last 5 or 6 nights I have been woken up in the middle of the night by sounds coming from my bedroom wall. Or more specifically sounds coming from the the wall housing the washing machine plumbing. I figured that we had a little friend that was making its self at home but I had not goten around to opening up the wall to sticky trap the little ******.

Came home tonight and the wife had decided to set the trap... but when she opened the access door she heard a hissing noise. She asked me to find out what the noise was or if it was a concern. Well it was a concern.

102_0088.jpg

This is the section of PEX that I removed from below the floor.

102_0087.jpg

and here is what the critter had decided to leave for me. Well I run to the hardware store in town and pick up some 1/2" pex and all of the fittings I needed, came home and worked on fixing the damage. The cheap crimper I had picked up a while back was giving me problems and when i turned on the well pump I had water spraying every where. Back to the hardware store to pick up more clamps. Asked if they had any crimping tools and the owner offered the one he has for rental. Yet again the right tool for the job makes work easier. Got the plumbing done but now I need to pick up some new insulation as the fiberglass is saturated :( Maybe will have this done in one more night so I can get back to work on the shop and my 100 other projects.
and how do you like the way the builder routed the line for the hose bib... I fixed this properly too...

Well today got off to a wonderful start... got up to go to work and found I had no water. Called in and booked a day of leave to get it sorted out.

The 10 month old heat tape had bit the big one and the water line had frozen.

Got a new heat tape installed and insulated it by lunch. Got some more work done on the pex issue from the other night, I might have that all buttoned up this weekend.

And I managed to get my 4th truss up and braced.

That was my day. I hope to have some good progress done this weekend. But I guess time will tell on that plan.

Man I hate those crimp ring pex fittings. My plumber turned me on to the Rehau brand connections a while back and thats all I'll use ever again. A bit $$$ but well worth it.

Is your water line not buried in a deep trench, or is the heat tape just for where the line comes out of the well and enters the trench? I'd always kinda wondered what people did to stop it from freezing there...

I admire your build! An ambitious project, especially to do in the Manitoba winter.

I will take a look at these. Are they an expansion type or are they like the shark bite fittings?

Thanks for the compliments. I was not planning on doing this during the winter but you deal with the cards your dealt.

I live in a mobile home so we have approximately 4' of water line between the ground and the house in the crawl space. The previous owners also had the pressure tank and well pump control circuit under the trailer, I relocated those last year after some freezing issues.

$800 for stamped drawings is reasonable for what you got.

My $0.02 of course :)

-Wardster

Your evaluation is fair. I was just expecting more. They have saved me several hastles along the way and the support I have recieved from the draftsman has been top notch. Any questions I have had have been answered within a couple hours and the Planning District signed off the permit without even heavily examining the plans as the draftsman and engineer both have excelent reputations.

This is my first build that I have been involved on this side of the process so I was somewhat suprised at some of the costs.

Thanks for following along.

Today was productive. I now have 11 trusses up and temp braced. It is a lot slower puting up trusses by ones self than with a crew but they are going up.

I want to get all of the trusses upright tomorrow and start on the bracing. We will see how far I get.

Pictures tomorrow.

No pictures today. Took the camera outside but the sun was down already. :(

Not much to take pictures of today anyways. Really no visual progress today.

Weather was cold and windy. Almost completed the size increase to the front man door. Did a small amount of other work but spent most of the day trying to figure out what I was going to do next, Oh Well. There is always next weekend.

It is pretty cold here today, woke up this morning to -30 degrees Celcius with the wind chill. I am going to do some cutting tonight. I need to get the ridge blocking cut.

We will see how far I get with that before I throw in the towel. Tomorrow is supposed to be above 0 so I might get some arial work done then.

Yeah, I was wondering about your post a few days ago about "beating the cold" !

Maybe you can hire some one to help you get it closed in before Christmas.

It is coming together. We often over come the cold weather by wearing so many clothes that we look like walking snowmen (or the Stay Puffed Marshmallow Man). All told I get much less done on the cold days.

We had crazy winds yesterday. Wind flipped about 6 sheets of OSB off of my lift, snapped on in half and blew 1/2 of the broken sheet 200 yards accross the field. But the building and truss's stayed were I put them

The wind calmed down for a while last night and I got a bunch of bracing done on the mono trusses. I hope to have them done tonight so I can get that sheathed for better access to the main roof for securing and bracing.

Looks like its coming along well despite the weather. Are you planning to do tin or shingles?

I went with tin, now I've given up on getting my ridge cap on til spring, way to slippery!

I am going with red metal. If I can move quickly once I get the sheathing up I am going to attempt to do the metal before spring. I don't blame you for being cautious and waiting for better weather.

Thanks for checking in and welcome to the Garage Journal if you haven't been welcomed before.

Thanks, I mostly just lurk here, looking for inspiration.
Its supposed to get above freezing here today, so I'm going to try tackling my ridge cap today. First though I'm putting a wood stove in and blasting the heat to it. With no insulation, vapor barrier or drywall in the way, I'm hoping to get the tin warm enough that I can get some grip, plus get the foam stops to actually stick down. That was part of my problem when I tried last weekend, they kept blowing away in the wind!

I noticed you mentioned that you're putting tin over sheeting, are you running strapping as well?

Thorkey,
I am amazed that you have only responded to my posts in the last 3 months. Thanks, you were saying that you might be moving to Manitoba next year. Out of curiosity where are you living now? You should post some pictures of your shop.
To answer your question I am not planning on adding purlins on top of the sheathing. To be perfectly honest the whole concept of purlins and or post and beam framing makes me a little queasy. I am used to conventional framing as I did quite a bit of it when I was younger and I am a bit of a creature of habit. Talking with my father he said that Steel Roofing over sheathing works and he seemed to encourage it based on the current price of OSB.
I got part of the lean-to roof framed today and did yet another trip to the lumber yard for H-Clips and Joist Hanger Nails. Here are some pictures.

102_0110.jpg

102_0111.jpg

I would like to try to get this portion of the roof done tomorrow, we will see how that goes.

I was thinking of creating a build thread, but, I'm only building the garage to raise my property value, so I can get a better price when I sell. I almost feel like I'm building it for someone else, which I guess is what I'm technically doing. Once I move back to Manitoba, I'll be building a proper shop and will do a build thread on that one.

I'm not sure if this link will work, but here's its current state,

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hpho...515828281276_540651275_11275098_6096326_n.jpg

I did manage to get my ridge cap done yesterday, had a couple scary moments and the wind was a pain, but I'm officially done sliding around on a tin roof for this year

I'm currently living in Estevan SK, but grew up close to where you are and have actually been looking at acreages that are practically in your backyard.

As for the strapping/purlins thing, I'm goina send you a PM regarding that, just in case I'm way off base, I don't want to start an issue in your build thread, but feel free to post it up here if you like.

Oh yah, forgot to mention, looks like you're making some great progress!

I'll have to double check what you said the size of your shop is, but, its looking a lot bigger then I anticipated.

The size is 32 x 40

22 x 40 has a 14' ceiling and the 10 x 40 remaining has 8' ceilings

You garage looks like it is coming along, I grew up around Regina and am working out here now would like to get back to Sask when I retire.

I am hoping that this will bring up my property value too. The big caveat is if it is done or not when it comes time to move. According to the boss I am here at least another year and a half.

My little friend the pex eating mouse is back.

Woke up this morning to find the kitchen floor covered in water. Found the water line for the dishwasher was leaking. (Will post pictures later)

Looks like a PEX crimping tool is in order... and more mouse traps.

Will post an update tonight.

Todays progress:

Not a lot to show, worked all day but only got a little finished.

102_0135.jpg

102_0136.jpg

-I did finally get the roof on the lean-to sheathed
-I also ground the heads off the nails in my hurricane ties so I correct the curve in my one wall (one of the down sides of working in the dark and assuming that things were straight)
got the wall straightened and did some site cleanup
-Shoveled more snow
-Decided to add 2 x 4 perlins on top of the sheathing for 2 reasons
* to give more bite to the screws for the metal roofing
* to prevent myself from thundering in when walking around on the slippery roof (I do not want that happening and I am already very leary around hights)
- got 4 x 12' lengths of purlin nailed to the roof.

I only have to work 2 days this week :) then I am off for 2.5 weeks so I might get a dent put into things this week <fingers crossed>

If you're goina put up tin in this weather, I highly recommend some gel knee pads and very soft rubber shoes! Also, make sure you keep your feet on the screws.

We have been having a pretty mild winter so far. I am pretty thankful for that.

Did some work on getting the trusses properly alligned today.

Got some more strapping (purlins) added to the roof of the lean-to. That makes me much more comfortable working on the roof in this weather.

Added some of the perminant bracing to the top trusses. The the sun went down. More progress and pictures tomorrow.

By the way thanks everyone for all of your encouragement and positive comments.
