I did some work on a US based company's production plant in TJ. I did it according to the NEC.
(they have no rules).

The most common way to run conduit in a residential slab down there is to take a piece of garden hose, smear it with grease so it can be removed and used again, weight it down with rocks, and pour the "concrete" (mostly sand) and let it cure. Then they come back and pull the hose out. It leaves a prelubricated chase.

You need to get into South America or down island in the Caribbean to really see some dangerous and crazy stuff. Ground rods do not exist, circuit protection is optional, GFCI or anything resembling safety devices are very rare…and home done wiring with whatever is available is the norm in most places.

They used the wrong receptacle plate. They should have used the plate with the hole for a cord retainer.

Somewhere I have a picture of an outlet I found during my home inspection that was setup like that. Real exciting thing was it had 240v on it, so it was either wired REALLY wrong or was some sort of messed up MWBC.

Lots of breakers were left OFF until I replaced everything.

Edit: from my inspection report

If you really want a jolt, ride a bus through any city or town in Ireland. The bus window seat is at a perfect height to observe the way the utilities are wired between buildings.

I still get flashbacks.

Lucky the buildings are of stone or masonry construction.

I just watched them wire a box like this buried in the sand, nothing but tape on the connections. Every knock out will let water and sand in. Buried about 6 inches. Bent the conduit with a torch.

The Comedian George Lopez had a bit where he talked about Mexican workers and construction permits. I haven't been able to find it on the web. Basically when asked about permits, their answer was "Permit?,......you permit us to do the work and we do it", or something like that. Of course his delivery is much funnier.

Along the same theme of how power distribution is done elsewhere, here's an image in big-city south China ten years or so ago. This kind of thing is so common one doesn't notice it.

This is a "Better Class" installation.
