I like to get 3rd and 4th opinions on choices I make so I will be posting some photos of my shop build. All opinions are valued. There have been very hard choices but now I see the light the only thing in between is the money.

He needs all the windows to build his shop like a house. Because after his wife finds out the true cost to build that castle, he will be living in it.

If not, can I move in?

Hey Guys. All the windows...we get a lot of sunshine here from the rear of the shop so I put in 5x3' windows on the rear 8' to the bottom where the after 3PM sun shifts for the natural light. The 8 windows in the front..that is a little overboard however much like Cline mentions that will be living space on the second floor.

The huge Garage doors are needed but maybe not the second 2 big ones. People I met with always told me they had 14x14' doors...turns out they didn't! These things are huge and expensive.

Originally was doing a drain in the center of the floor, but it was adding too many costs being on a septic system so I scrapped it a week or so before the concrete was due.

Cement board siding to match the house as this is on the same acre in a half as the house. The windows are jeldwen v2500, pretty inexpensive and farely nice windows. The side and rear windows at 5'x3' and front 8 are 6'x3'.

Some information:

72' x 50' x 18' interior height building.
60' x 50' shop space.
12' x 50' upper living space apartment.
12' x 50' lower office and workout area.

The siding is cement board to match house.
The roof is copper brown steel (wind blows a lot here and didn't want to deal with shingles).
Windows are JeldWen brand.

WA State Shop Build

For the concrete I went with 6" 6.5 sack with rebar at 16" with 12' crack reducing cuts. I don't know if this was the perfect choice or not..I know I wouldn't have wanted to spend more money.

I really wanted glycol floor heat..however when I was about to pull the $12k trigger it was mid february and it was 52 degrees...and I thought...this is wasted expense at this location. I am hoping I don't regret that decision!

Plumbed for 2 bathrooms, one for shop and one for apartment.

rebar layed out, I chose to go with vapor barrier and insulation since i didn't do the floor heat.

It took 65 yards of concrete. Had to pay for winter mix even though it was 50 degrees...price was around 8300 after 7.9 tax.

This is how the shop sits today. I have the man door frames to be installed today, and garage doors soon.

The plan was to match my house siding and trim exactly however the difference between cement board and cement board shake siding was giant. So I am going to use the cement board above the belly pan. I didn't think it was worth the extra $3200.00, so I will just paint above the belly pan a different color. Cement board was around 750 vs the 3200.

I also have added a covered entry to the main door. The man doors are alliance commercial steel doors.

I am looking for advice on the ceiling lighting. I am interested in LED recessed 4-5 bulb fixtures. Lithonia? has some available through home depot, I will also check the wholesale suppliers locally.

I am running a 400A service into the building.

Any input on heating for the 60'x50 shop would be appreciated. We do not have gas our here, and I don't want a propane tank so It will be electric heat. Brand or style recommendation would be great.

Also I am looking at the ductless heating and cooling for the apt, brands and places to buy? I was quoted too much and am going to install it myself with my contractor.

Rich,
I am located in Moses Lake. They finished up most of the siding yesterday.

WOW, that is perfect size shop !!!

Mini-split sounds perfect for both the apartment and office side (either 2 or one big one with 2 zones).

For the shop side, maybe forced air system since all electric. Your issue will be hanging the duct work that want interfere with lifts, lighting, etc. You need A/C in shop side??

Why are you thinking recessed LED . . . that seems counter productive with such a tall ceiling height?? :dunno: You would be good candidate for T5HO hanging IMHO.

CNG -- I am happy with the size choice. Mini split is where I am leaning. I didn't plan to have so much into the space! Duct work doesn't sound the best! But, I haven't figured it out yet. We have the cheapest power in the country. No not concerned with ac at this time..swamp cooler hooked to a hose if it comes down to it.

Recessed t5 fixtures are an idea because some of the stored items are 16.5 ft tall..

Rich yeah not a lot of reasons to be in moses lake!
