Hi,

Thought id give people the heads up.

I'm moving jobs this week and as part of it i had to move my box, which meant taking out the drawers to lighten it so i could lift it.

So taking the opportunity of it all being out and in bits i gave it a once over and clean.

It's a 40" KRA bought in June brand new. I found like many others several parts of the box interior that hadn't been painted - mainly the lock mechanism at the rear of the box.

I have found another fault however.

EVERY drawer is missing paint on the bottom of it around two holes and smack bang in the middle. I'm guessing they hang the drawers on hooks when powder coating them and the powder doesn't get under the hooks. On my box every single drawer was missing paint in the same 3 spots - obviously a manufacturing issue.

Bare steel is going to rust so get the touch up paint out.

Trade it in for a KRL and you won't have any more paint problems. :)

In all seriousness though, if you bought the box new, it's under warrenty. Talk to your driver. He may be able to exchange the whole box for you, and if he won't then call snap on directly and talk to them.

I'd bet the Krl drawers go through the same process. Id be surprised if they aren't the same.

Uhm, does it affect anything? You do realize the inner wall is bare steel as well?

I've had my KRL Drawers out, she's painted/coated inside & out, top & bottoms...same for the EPIQ Drawer I used for the bench I recently built..

KRL boxes actually use a different paint process. I've had drawers out of a few KRL boxes and I've never seen anything left unpainted.
They actually had a video where they bragged about how well the master series boxes are painted

Not sure SO will warranty for something that hasn't actually happened yet

I think you are being over picky about this if none of the spots can be seen when the box is assembled. I would get a hold of a regenional manger and express your concerns with them. I wouldn't be an *** and push for warranty, but more so let them know your disappointment and see what he says. Maybe this is QC problems that should have never left. I know for a fact SO will scrap new boxes that have paint that is defective.

I'm not making a fuss about it, certainly won't be contacting so for warranty on it a bit of touch up paint sorts it. Just bringing it to people's attention, someone in a wet environment could have issues.

As above the actual drawer is painted, as will the Krl ones but I'd bet around the holes in the drawer base they will have missing paint. I mean how else are they going to paint them !? Do the kra/Krl/master all have different painting processes ? They will have to hang them in some manner to spray them all.

I still think you should let SO knoe about this, it very well could be normal and then again it could be a batch of boxes that got poor coverage that SO doesn't know about.

For what the trucks charge for a metal box its too much to ask for some guy just hit the areas with a rattle can just to at least coat them?

I know its hard to get powder coating into tight areas but there isn't much excuse for the flat panel of the drawer to not have a spray whether you see it or not.

If I'm not mistaken based of previous discussions about this very topic, there is no actual "bare metal" as the box is coated with rust inhibitors/etc prior to paint.

For all the **** I get for buying a pos hf box and pos craftsman tools yes, a little fun razzing is wholly justified. Note from the emoticon that it was all in jest anyway. No need to get butthurt over a joke.

This. ^.

If I hear any more snide comments like these I think I am going to puke:

1. It might be OK for home use but it would never last in a professional shop
2. I'm willing to pay more for "quality".
3. I would never let that (HF, Cman, [fill in the blank]) junk in my shop.
4. (When asked about warranty details) You need to build a relationship with your driver....

If side A pokes side B it's just joking but god forbid side B responds, that would be uncalled for **** that might be interpreted as snide. I swear, people on the internet care too damn much how other's spend their money.

No doubt.. Trust me it took me along time, but this place is much more enjoyable if you ignore the trolls, both sides are guilty, but they will never admit it. Everyone wants to argue that the consumer brand choice they made is correct and everyone else is either cheap or drinking Kool-Aid. I wonder sometimes if some of these people really think we give a Chit? IMO anyone who is so blatantly biased towards any particular brand has absolutely NO credibility with me... Variety is the spice of Life. Some of these members are so Bad, I don't even need to read the post, I can tell by viewing there name/thread topic and know basically what there argument/comments will be.

I'm new to this forum, seems I may be in for a beating. I'm a professional mechanic, and have used Craftsman tools as my staple for... as long as I can remember. I have some Snap-on, and hey, they are great... My problem was I never had a good dealer, and couldn't stand 'payments'. If I could have swung buying the Snap-on tools outright, without the payments, I would have, but... I didn't want to stay as a dealer mechanic, and wanted a house, and a start on my own... I made do with Craftsman, Lisle, GearWrench... I did need a decent box at the dealership. I had a modest MAC, TECH 1000, I bought used. I wanted a Cman pro, of the same size, but the MAC was what I found. I considered buying used Snap-on, etc... But I liked the easy warranty of Craftsman... I had a store right up the street.

Point being, why argue??? I will never say anything bad about Snap-on, if I wasn't needing money for a building, lifts, tire machines, etc... I would indulge, but..........the Craftsman and other counterparts, will work just fine, I have proven that to.... Myself.. Alot of guys poked fun at times, but they are at the dealer still, and I am starting to build my own shop and business. It wasn't just tools, even the car I drove... A Toyota Corolla!!! :shocking: Not the dream car, but I personally had plans, and needed as much of my income as possible. I learned to like my tools for what they were, and I was okay with it. Maybe one day I will treat myself to a Snap-on, or maybe a Hazet set... when I have money to burn on a want...... something I enjoy.

I like all quality tools, and have been amazed at what the basic brands have allowed me to do.

Toyota...You will get no bashing from me. I still have C-man wrenches. I don't use them to make a living, but I do use them at work(machinist). I bought many of them long before the China stuff hit the shelves. I bought them as I could afford them. Now, kids and just plain trying to make ends meet slow down the process a bit. Hang in there and follow YOUR dreams. When someone else buys your wrenches then they can bash the tool in you hand.......

You can relax, here is my resto thread on a 35 yr. old KC 506B S-O box. The last photo in post # 18 shows areas on the bottom, back and inside the panels on both sides that were never painted. After all this poor box has been through there is very little rust forming, just thick solid metal to work with (it weighs over 100 lbs.!). I wouldn't worry about some unpainted areas inside your box, it should be a very long time before any significant amount of rust causes problems.

All snapon boxes are powder coated. The heritage series goes through the exact same pre paint treatment and powder coating as the epiq. They all follow the same exact path through the plant. I've been there and seen it first hand...
