Really? Starts /Stops, excessive cap/penetration, LOF, any other indications that will fail a VT, PT, & RT. Root passes...... Yeah, welders grind. And grind often if they want to pass inspection. Even the guys that are good. I inspect a lot of code work, ASME sec IX, B31.3....ect. Grinding is important. The NHRA weld cages are mostly 4130 (?), and should be GTAW. I don't expect a lot of grinding to be going on during the cover pass, I do expect the s/s point to be free of any indications and 100% penetration through out. Read a lot of film, do a ton of NDT, and inspect 1000's of miles of weld.
Pretty is not always good, and ugly...is not always bad. I've seen welds that were **** stinking ugly that pass code with flying colors and very nice looking welds that that weren't worth .... (you get the idea)
