Good post. The NHRA will not cert
a rollcage in a car if any of the
welds have been ground. The test
for nuclear work can be humbling.

Not sure about other but don't hit my welds with a grinding wheel. Just a wire brush to knock off slag. If I have a large area I put a wire wheel on the grinder and let it rip.

With that said I still wouldn't trust myself welding a roll cage. Just don't throw sparks over the course of a year to feel comfortable doing something like that. After all it only takes one bad weld.

Lol sheet metal is a different beast that's for sure. No smooth line without the grinder.

Would love to learn lead stuck work

Really? Starts /Stops, excessive cap/penetration, LOF, any other indications that will fail a VT, PT, & RT. Root passes...... Yeah, welders grind. And grind often if they want to pass inspection. Even the guys that are good. I inspect a lot of code work, ASME sec IX, B31.3....ect. Grinding is important. The NHRA weld cages are mostly 4130 (?), and should be GTAW. I don't expect a lot of grinding to be going on during the cover pass, I do expect the s/s point to be free of any indications and 100% penetration through out. Read a lot of film, do a ton of NDT, and inspect 1000's of miles of weld.

Pretty is not always good, and ugly...is not always bad. I've seen welds that were **** stinking ugly that pass code with flying colors and very nice looking welds that that weren't worth .... (you get the idea)

Sometimes you can't get a grinder where the weld is. Luckily only pen die test on these.

This is what happens when's your project engineers last job was Starbucks. Fml.

Bore scope, extended carbide wheels, improvise adapt and overcome. If not, rejection is eminent. Practice, destructive test the practice piece, follow your WPS. I'm doing a 20 pc job that I've failed at least once over already. Dissimilar alloys and 100% pen on a weld that is 4 ft from an opening and only on 1sch40 material. Pencil grinder is the only way in. RT finds a lot to fail ...

Those last ones were done with cutting goggles and sunscreen. Saftey guy like I was using SPF 50... If we were talking X-ray or UT would be a different story.
