I thru one together in a hurry for the farm to carry around in truck and out in field. Just osb and dowel rods. Lasted 13 years so far. I carry it straight up and down in one hand and cordless impact in other and sockets stay on very well.

Posted this before, but FWIW here it is again. This is from foamfittools and CNC cut into a laminated foam with red on the bottom and black on the top. I gave them an Excel spreadsheet with the sizes and diameters of the sockets and they did the rest. Sockets are cats-and-dogs; Craftsman, Plumb, Husky. SAE on the left, metric on the right. Have tried rails, pins, blow mold and trays and this is my favorite so far. It isn't super space efficient, but it gives me a good visual of what's missing at the end of a project

I have been using these for over 20 years http://www.mactools.com/en-us/Tool-Storage/Tool-Storage-Organization/917bb9b4-ee45-4f4e-8685-a48301655831/Clip-In-Socket-Organizers/SH444B/Socket-Rack-Tray. If I were to change it would be to the version that lowes sells with the plastic rails and detent ball. I have about four of these that hold the majority of my sockets. For 1/4 inch drive I like the MTS magnetic blocks the best. The great thing about the metal trays is when the sockets started to get grungy I would just throw the whole tray into the Cuda parts washer for ten minutes or so.

I like that alot. Are the ratchet, extension holders also a Magrail product?

Thanks! Ratchet holders are just normal magrails. Used the spacers to provide a spot for each ratchet. I needed these as I bring this toolbox on my trailer to races and I didn't want the tools moving around.

My main box is full of hf trays & use them for the 1/2 & 1/4 in my cart but I just picked up the lowes one. I took the 1/4 off the front row & replaced them with 3/8 from an old hf rail so it now holds 3/8 impact shallow, universal & deep with some extras & frequently used 1/2. I've been happy with the new setup & it really cuts down on clutter.

From my research, the following are the same:

Carlyle
Husky
Kobalt (aluminum rail and 4 row rack)
Performax (Menards)
Mighty Seven
Performance Tool
Capri
Sealey
Koken

Kobalt also sells plastic rails with clips which are different from those above, but match:

Vim
Wright
Armstrong
Matco
SnapOn
Craftsman
Goliath

I just saw your reply. Thank you for the clarification! I was aware of the USA Vim/Kobalt rails; Cripes still has some. Never heard of Goliath Industrial though. I'll have to take a look.

My Gearwrench and Carlyle look an awful lot alike.

I have a rail that came with Gearwrench sockets that is like the Carlyle, but I didn't include it in the list because when you look to buy one individually, you find the type with the clips *in* a rail, as opposed to the ones *on* a rail.

Ahh, I guess I wasn't paying that close of attention. Sorry.

If your Gearwrench rail came with a socket set, you are correct, though. It is identical to the Carlyle/Husky we are talking about. And if not, it may match a different Carlyle/Husky product. One of the things I've noticed is that many vendors sell several different styles of socket rails, so you have to be very deliberate when you are looking.

For instance, Lowes sells both the Carlyle/Husky and the VIM/Wright. They also sell a third kind of rail, a flat, all metal one, that is merchandised with clips mounted onto both sides. I've seen another type there, also, possibly the clips-in-a-metal-rectangle style.

I put a about 1/8" thick piece of aluminum under my rails and drilled and tapped them so I could screw the rails down.

In case anyone was wondering I tried putting the extra lowes clips on the empty hf rail & they don't fit.
