however i was thinking of changing to the socket holders with posts, the only drawback is, the are only made for sockets up to 1 1/4" or 27mm what do you guys use for larger sockets?

I have the same problem! I've been thinking it's time for custom fab. Not to mention impact sockets don't fit in my kobalt holder side by side since they're thicker than chrome ones.

Larger sockets stand up on their own lined up in the back of the drawer.

I am just a DIY'er and don't have many sockets larger than 27MM. Just an axle socket set really. I just store them off to the side and not on any rale. I have the Kobalt metric and standard socket post and I love them. Have a set of 12pt and 6 pt in each drive size and I couldn't be happier with how easy it is to find everything.

but in a snap on anally retentive kinda way, i wanted them all lined up like little chrome soldiers lol

I'm not anally retentive or ocd or anything (I swear :lol_hitti ), I just like knowing where my sockets are. Maybe make your own pegs for the bigger sockets or keep them on the existing rails you have and move them to the back (or wherever they are most convenient). My big sockets do a great job sitting at the back of the drawer.

I am in the same boat you are. I have metric short and deep impact from 10-36mm. I have not found much in that will hold them all. Same with my 3/8. Short and deep 7-22mm. I was almost ready to start welding something up. I have seen videos of the ernst socket boss system. I am looking to see if it has the flexabilty I want. It looks like the closes thing I have found so far.

I personally like rail boards with clips FAR FAR better than hanson post trays, but that's just me.

I don't need a fu*&ing tool tray maker to tell me what size sockets I need to use and store.

As for bigger sized sockets, I just make my own socket rail boards with individual rails and then pop rivet them at the necessary side-to-size spacing to 1/8" sheet aluminum cut to size.

It's the width of the bigger sockets that tends to hamper storage (and is even a problem with the peg trays that you are switching to).

Make your own to fit your sockets and problem goes away.

the hansen type socket holders will take up a LOT more space in the drawer.

looks like what you already have works

I use a mix of rails, trays, and the boxes they come in. I am at max capacity and need a new box, but I think you have a nice set up. I am at the point ratchets and extensions have their own drawer. Everything in the big drawer is stacked 2-3 boxes deep. There's 10 box sets in that drawer along with the rails and trays. Lots of stuff. I need to have a lot of sets for grab and go for work.

Can anyone chime in on the socket boss? Looks like it has detents that keep the clips from roaming around . I want stuff to have a place and not move. This is for my mobile cart.

You guys with Hansen trays - do you actually look at the size on the post before you pick up the socket or do you just grab the socket without looking?

If I know what size I need, absolutely. That only works if you put everything back in the right place though :)

That would seem to be a logical reason for getting marked trays :eyecrazy::eyecrazy:

Check that your impacts will fit... Some have reported that impacts are too thick to fit the Hansen peg spacing...

If you have the room for Hansen style socket trays, they're nice, but not totally ideal. My Craftsman SAE impact sockets didn't fit, so I had to buy SO...:p

What I want is a labeled system with an individual spot for each socket that puts the business end up, without the posts (for quickly sizing unknown/oddball loose fasteners) and sets of sockets removable to take to the job.

I really think I'll have to make my own, probably from wood, but having them neatly and permanently labeled is my biggest obstacle.
