A bonus on the system is that the shop stays much cooler given the shading the collectors provide the roof. We are running in the 90's these days but the shop is staying in the low 80's, which I can manage. Usually getting pounded by the sun the shop runs up to about 92, at which point I decamp. Pretty good!

I had a system quoted a while back before I started building my shop & house, and the ROI was bad. I'm not interested in solar just for cheap energy, but it's a much easier decision if it's also a solid investment. I recently started looking at self installed solar, with a roughly 5 year ROI. That starts to look pretty good, as I plan to stay in the house forever and continue to use electricity.

It sounds like a few of you used Wholesale Solar and were happy with the experience. Any opinions you'd like to share?

I used Wholesale Solar and consider them to be a top flight operation. There was a problem with a "local" code issue. I describe it in post 24 on this thread. WS said, "we will take care of any problem." They did without delay or complaint. Every person I dealt with at WS was professional and pleasant. Having called on Wholesalers for 35 years in my business I have a great deal of experience to measure them by and I rate them as excellent.

I've done self install and I don't think I can get near a 5-year ROI... Maybe your power is more expensive than mine? Or do you get a local rebate?

My 6kw system probably pays for $40-$60 worth of power per month, costing ~$8k, with the federal rebate, works out as a payback in about 10 years (assuming constant power cost).

Most of the installs I've done are ground mount.. I'm more comfortable welding steel on the ground than I am working on a roof or doing a roof penetration.
