With the help (auspices) of the PUC (that’s what the second half of the statement says). That means federal dollars.

You can think that, but it doesn’t make it true. The feds have almost zero say over any local utility, certainly over any Public Utility Commission. PUCs are about the closest we have in local control and governance over utilities. They may not be perfect, but they’re pretty darned far from federal control.

Back to the original post, the absolute best deal is to own your own equipment. Lease deals are essentially enrichment programs for other people - when you look at the fine print you’ll see all sorts of escalators, loop holes and protections for the other guy, and very little true benefit for you. The absolute best deal is to pay cash (for anything), but in 25 years doing solar I know about as many people who’ve ponied up cash for a power system as I know folks who paid cash for their car. Yeah, it exists, but it’s not the majority of us. The good news is there are now multiple options for solar loans, as the economics of solar are real and well understood by financial folks.

Finding a good solar contractor is like finding a good general contractor - the big national companies aren’t always the best, there are good local companies doing work in just about every region of the country now, they just take a little more time to find. Run away from anyone that throws the hard sell mumbo-jumbo at you, and while “FREE STUFF” certainly gets your attention, it’s not a sign of a professional that respects your intelligence or is worth doing business with.
