Sounds like there's trouble in Dodge. Should work smoothly both directions. Wonder if the kit just doesn't quite work correctly with the older RHs?

Ok, so here’s the email reply I received this morning. Glad they’re taking responsibility and fixing it but I’m surprised this issue wasn’t discovered during research and development.

I'm not.

The message does say it was a limited manufacturing flaw. R&D can't pre-correct an error not related to the design.

If someone accidentally tweaked a machine's setup, unfortunately, this is one of the ways an error such as this gets found.

Agreed. Had to have been a production glitch. No way did Ideal design it wrong and then start shipping them. It's just not that kind of company IMO.

Seems to be the 3/8 kit that's the cranky one. That's the one I was thinking about but wanted to hang back to see what others were experiencing. Glad I did, because I don't need to create yet another warranty claim for SK--let those good folks get it squared away first.

Anyone out there NOT have trouble with the 3/8?

Does anyone know if the drop in kit comes with a new "c" clip? Mine has somehow become worn creating a lot of slop in the current gear/pawl unit and would really like to just get a new one.

If anybody got a mechanism with the glitch and I haven't reached out to you, drop me a PM and we'll take care of you...

I don't feel so stupid now. I installed a 3/8 drop in kit last week and was underwhelmed with the improvement. After reading about the pawl issues I removed and re-installed it and got it to work in one direction and not the other. It seems like a nice upgrade if they can get it to work.

Was just reading through this thread and seen that others are having (3/8") the same problem I am. Thought I had messed something up insatalling it and was going to order another from Epstein's. Glad I did not rush into it and read this to see what others thought about the upgrade. The 1/4" works fine. Just PMed Eric to get on the list.

And kudos to SK for stepping up to take care of those experiencing problems with the 3/8" kit.

Sadly, such customer service is a rarity these days.

Pretty much sums up my experience . Great that SK found the issue and is quick to step up and resolve it !

I also appear to be having this issue, didn't notice until reading this thread and going back to listen to the clicks in the ratchet.

Will send a PM.

From looking at my drop in, it seems the flaw is with the spring used under one of the indent balls. One has a lot less resistance compared to other side so one pawl can’t properly engage.

It is actually just one spring pushing in both directions on those two detent balls.

Hmm. I wonder if that single spring is the culprit, not able to apply enough force.

The teeth on a ratchet are just divisions of a circle, so old, new, shouldn't matter...The issue isn't the handle, it's the mechanism. To do what they're trying to do requires manufacturing with a very high degree of precision, and if you're off by just a tiny amount, performance will suffer.

Just curious, has anyone gotten the return label to send in the defective drop in and/or received a replacement yet?

I've also been curious about what the next step would be. I haven't heard anything. I was thinking perhaps the new drop-in might just arrive in the mail?

I received my updated ratchet today, it works perfectly. I went ahead and used it to replace the water pump on my Jeep. The backdrag is slightly heavier than on all of my 45170's, but seems to be getting better with a bit of use. They also threw in one of those small convertible screwdrivers. Great job, SK! Worth the wait.
