Some vise (Reed 4C) advice please.

I think I maybe have been bitten by the big old vise bug after seeing this Reed 4C for sale locally. I recently bought a 5” Wilton bullet vise and it’s probably as large a vise as I’ll ever need, but that 4C behemoth is calling. I have no trouble admitting to myself that I want it not only for the project that cleaning it up represents, but also for the pride of ownership as much as anything else. Its the pride of ownership thing brings me to my problem.
On one hand, the only picture I have shows a vise that while rusty, seems to be relatively free of gross mistreatment. The handle looks straight, the beam(?) doesn’t seem to have been used as an anvil, and there’s no paint to cover any repairs or cracks. Repairs or cracks that the seller has already assured me aren’t present. On the other hand, the swivel base isn’t there and I kinda feel like its omission might end up being a buzzkill of sorts. Not so much from a users perspective, but in the eyes of a person who’d like to have a nicely preserved AND complete example of its kind. What’s funny is that it didn’t bother me that it didn’t have a swivel base until I noticed that pretty much all the 4c vises I’ve seen pictures of here and across the web are equipped with one.
So my questions for those that know more about thes Reed vises are these... Was the 4C even offered without the swivel? If so, was the base the same with the intention being to just bolt the vise down through the same holes that the swivel locks wold have gone through? Seems like three holes minimum would be prudent for something expecting to see such heavy work. And if no to the first, do people ever part these old vises out so that there’d be any chance at all of finding a replacement base?
If this was one of those “I got it for 50 bucks!” type deals, I wouldn’t have hesitated for a second. Hell, I’d probably not have asked these questions if it were a 200 dollar deal, but the guy wants 300 for it. Now I know that in my part of the country really good deals on old iron don’t come up as often as they seem to in areas where a lot of old manufacturing took place, but 300 for an incomplete vise really has me on the fence. What say the vise guys here?

$300 is a good chunk of change, but I think a similar 4C that was Frankenstein'd up a bit just sold for $250 in the classifieds. If the one your are looking at is in good shape, it's honestly just money. It will hurt a little now, but you will soon forget about the pain when she is all spiffed up!

No, they were never sold without a swivel base.

You can use the two holes on each side to bolt it down and it should be find honestly. Until you see it first-hand you don't realize how BIG it really is. You *could* also use the center threaded hole in the bottom to bolt it down too, I think it's like a standard 1" thread?

I found one of the older round-nose 4C's a while back. Everything was seized up good. It looked like it was rusted over, dropped in mud, then a bag of concrete dumped on it. Took a lot of time and patience but I eventually got it all freed up.

Give it a good look over to make sure nothing else is damaged or missing. The older ones had cast-in jaws too, so pay attention to their condition.

$300 is a little on the high side missing the base... Just depends on how much you want it. My advise is to take cash, go see it in person, and haggle then... Trying to haggle on the phone or via email just isn't the same.

I've never seen a 4C parted out, but I guess there is a first time for everything, you never know. Just don't hold your breath...

Like others have stated the Reed "C" series vises were always swivel base. Now a 4C would have the same swivel base as a 206 or 406 but you'd also need the shoulder bolt and swivel lock downs. I would not hold your breath on finding a complete swivel base assembly in good condition.

IMO opinion it's a big vise to just bolt down through the swivel lock down holes but as Jason said you could always thread a bolt up into it also. TBH, I wouldn't be on the fence on this one though, I would pass and wait for a more complete deal. My recommendation would be opposite if it was less money.

If it helps you make your decision or have some hope of finding a better deal in the last 4 months I've been able to buy a complete and in perfect condition Reed 406 for $300, a complete Reed 4C in good condition needing a new handle for $100 and a Wilton 600N for $50. All purchased within a 400 mile radius in AZ and CA. You'll have to decide if you have the patience to keep looking or not.

It also never hurts to just google trying different keywords. I came across two (2) Reed 4C's being sold by some machinery dealer when I lived in Houston. It was an oddball listing on some machinery website.

Try looking for Industrial machinery dealers in your are...

Thanks to all for taking the time to reply. I haven’t made up my mind just yet, but I’m leaning towards going to look at it on Friday if it’s still there. I said it was local, but it’s actually about a 45 minute drive from the house which isn’t bad. I did hear from another seller who has one that’s complete, but he’s asking too much. Also that older one just offers more appeal for me. Here’s a picture of of this second one, but it’s for sure out of the running.
There’s also a fella who says he’s got a Morgan 160 that’s not too far away. This one seems dubious since the pictures he’s using to try to sell his vise aren’t his. He didn’t try and hide the fact when I asked him about it, but he has yet to produce pictures of his actual vise. Still, I feel like I’ll have to see what I can find out about the Morgan.

.

That's a current style "CA" vise, and it does not look interesting at all to me. It doesn't have a monstrous spindle nose, no split thrust bushing, and the handles look wimpy for the size of the vise. In short, it looks like Reed just bought a Columbian and put their brand on it. Hold out for a stout looking older model.

Exmaxima, that’s just what I thought when I saw that one. This is coming from someone who only recently became interested in these old vises, but it just didn’t seem to have quite the “soul” that the older one displayed.

You are correct, towards the end Columbian just re-branded some vises for Reed to sell..

It appears to be missing its pipe jaws too... (Though you said that's not the seller's pic)...

A morgan 160 is a different vise though, it doesn't have pipe jaws?

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding here.... The 4c in my first post has its pipe jaws though it’s hard to tell in the picture. That is a picture of the vise being sold, it’s the guy selling the Morgan that has yet to produce pictures of his vise.

Suddenly it seems to be raining Reed vises. I found these two today. Both look quite rough, but I thought I’d look at them anyway. Some storms moved through the area and the seller didn’t want to mess with meeting me today so I’ll have to try tomorrow. I can see that one is a 3c but can’t tell about the other. Any ideas? I know it’s hard to know from the pictures, but do either look salvageable?

That 3C looks good from what can be seen. If you could get that one for around $100 that would be a deal. The other looks to be the predecessor to the "C" series vises so super old. It also appears to wear some scars of its age.

Yes, I can see the jaws in the first pic... I was talking about post #6, but since that isn't the actual vise for sale it doesn't really matter... ignore what I said before... lol.

The 3C looks to be in decent shape, hard to tell from just one pic and only a portion of it...

The other one is an older reed, I can see it's missing a jaw, and is also missing its pipe jaws...

All depends on the price and if there is any hidden damage... Got to look them over from top to bottom, don't be afraid to set it on its side either to inspect underneath. Make sure the big fat swivel bolt is there and nothing is cracked.

Well I bought the big 4C that was missing it’s swivel base. Hit it with a wire brush to spiff it up a bit and I’m quite pleased. The other two Reeds got away from me in a frustrating manner though. I’d replied to the ad almost immediately after its posting offering to make the 1hr drive that day and leaving my phone number. I could tell that the seller wasn’t exactly a “people person” by his terse one sentence replies to my emails, and his seeming reluctance to call or text rather than email, so there was significant communication lag. I thought we’d settled on a meeting, but he never gave me a specific location to map to and when I asked for it he simply said “it’s raining, so not today”. More communication lag the next day caused my opportunities to slip away too. Oh well.
I haven’t disassembled my 4C yet beyond just seperating the two halves (put it back together for the picture) and removing the setscrew for the split nut that secures the handle. Right now the vise is laying on its side with that setscrew hole filled with Kroil. I haven’t tried to tap that split nut loose yet, but it almost looks like it’s a left hand thread. Is that correct?

No, it's a regular thread. I've never had one that was stuck bad, just use a bolt and hammer to tap it around carefully.
