Someone must have put out an alert in my area that there is a 28yr old male addicted to GJ and currently outfitting his shop, and if you list ANY antique power tool under $50 he will buy it from you...

I can't help myself. Thanks to you guys on here, I can't stop scanning CL for tools and I've developed a taste for the solid old real metal made shop tools from yester-year.

I picked up an 18" Sears and Roebuck lathe today. Looks pretty old, but seems solid. I didn't know what to look for and this one came up for $45. I think it is designed for metal based on how its set up, I'd prefer one for wood, but considering I never used a lathe before, I figure it's a good starter lathe.

Can someone stop me?? It's like a disease... First it was the vintage metal Black n Decker routers, then it was an older Delta table saw, then a Walker Turner drill press, and working on a trade for an antique Craftsman bandsaw... I'm afraid I'm just getting started, what's next? :scared:

Hi, I'm Nate, and I'm a tool-a-holic....

You need to evaluate your priorites; you are living a very materialistic life.
Think of others before your self; you will be much happier:thumbup:

Coming here for your problems is like a drunk sitting at the bar asking for help in stopping. Get out of here and don't come back, it's your only chance.

Welcome, Nate! We are known as "enablers". We encourage the buying of tools. We will tell you where to get your "tool fix" and help you buy posting great deals and steer you in the direction of the great deals. It's hopeless, you are doomed like the rest of us. :)

I'm lucky. My wife understands.

To my best estimation, I had spent about $1500 on tools at sears, lowes, HF etc before finding GJ. After GJ, I understood flea markets, CL, and estate sales. I think I've picked up in the last year another $3300 worth of tools for about $700, because I don't mind used tools.

And since I'm a DIY guy, my Return on Investment isnt like a Pro. my tools don't make me money, yet they save me money. My best estimate is that DIY has saved me about $3700 in car maintenance/repair over the past 3 years, and $2500 in home repairs/maintenance over the past 4 years. And the longer I have the tools, the more they pay for themselves.

See how i camly rationalize my addiction?

Do not resist. You will be assimilated.

I seen a Craftsman Circular saw still in the original looking carrying box from the 50's I believe. I think it was in your price range as well. Let me know if yo want it.

I already have one of them (metal case and all). My brother found it at a sale. He paid like 75 cents for it. The case is a little rough but the saw is in near mint condition. I gave him $5.

TELL me about it, Countrytech!

But there is no sense worrying about the disease, once you've contracted it. Just enjoy the ride...and start planning now for a bigger garage!

I know how you feel, I currently own 2 dewalt radial arm saws, 2 50's era craftsman table saws, 3 Drill presses (2 of which are vintage), 2 wood lathes, an atlas scroll saw, a 70's era belt sander, a very old home brew bench grinder, And I'm sure that theres something I've forgotten. The worst part about my illness is that I don't even do any wood working but I bought the tools because I appreciate the style and quality of the old iron. And lets not forget that I own more vises than work benches...

You sound exactly like where I'll be in a couple years. New stuff is cool, but some of this old stuff is so solid and just seems to work with even more precision than the newer chinese ****.

How much for the wood lathe and scroll saw? :lol_hitti

Well I got bit again this weekend and I need some help from you guys....

I found a scroll saw and yet another drill press on CL so I called and asked if he'd take $50 for the pair. I wanted the scroll saw, and got a better deal if I took both so I figured I'd just resell the drill press because I don't need another one.... or maybe I do... now that I have it, that little drill is cool. It's no higher than 18" and is a 5 speed, seems to run smooth enough and has decent amount of reach with the spindle, with little or no run-out. I need to oil it and clean up the rust and might want to paint it. But I'm afraid I won't be able to part with it for sure if I fix it up... what should I do??

My wife thinks I am certifiably nuts now. :D

There a couple old school Mastercraft (Cdn Tire store brand), metal housing drills for sale on my local Kijiji. $10 ea, they are on my watchlist, if they don't sell soon I'll probably break down and get at least 1. ;) Btw, I have no real need for them!

I used to buy retail. But, wonder of wonders, my wife  said I had to go to my old high school surplus auction! And that is where my tool savings began. I can't remember when I last bought retail - other than consumables, like cut-off wheels, taps and reamers, lots of green clean and wd40. Everything else is Auction (live and on-line), flea markets and garage sales. Now, she doesn't give me an allowance off my pension , so I have to buy my own toys - I mean tools - so I buy and sell to support my habit. Check out my Diamond tools on Show your Adjustable Wrenches thread.
