Something a little different.....

Well, I didn't know exactly where to put this since it's not exactly a "garage"....I have one of those out back though. But it is a workshop, so hopefully I don't get ostracized for it. :p This is a progression of my "gun room". It started out as merely a corner of my full, unfinished basement.

As you can see in the pics it started with a workbench and slowly progressed. Unfortunately, the only old pics I have are of the corner of the basement where the workbench sits. So you'll just have to make due with pictures from one angle and use your imagination on the rest until I get you some additional pictures. Heres how it all got started and finally got to a point where I decided it needed to be its own room.

Just a workbench, lonely in the corner:

Old fridge lying around + workbench = getting better

And finally, here are where we were before I decided that my man cave wasn't secure enough from the women-folk....so it needs to be its own room:

As of now, the cinderblock is getting filled and painted. I sourced a nice big cabinet that will house ammo, magazines, cleaning supplies, etc. The room is only going to be about 12.5'x15' when the other two sides get framed in. But it should be plenty big enough for what I will be doing in there.

You can see the two windows in the pictures....they are getting replaced....either by some nice security windows or glass blocks. I like the idea of the glass blocks because you cant see through them, yet they let light in...and are more of a challenge to break through than a regular window. Regardless of which route I choose, they will have bars on the windows as an extra security measure.

A safe will be sitting to the left of the small window you see in the pictures. To the right of the workbench and the large window there is a door that leads outside. This door has paned glass and is getting replaced with a metal door with no windows. From this room into the basement there will be a set of metal double-doors on one side and a single metal door on the backside. If you can't tell already, I'm trying to make this room as secure as possible. Though I will have a large safe to house the most valuable things, I don't want anyone to ever make it inside.

Some other future plans for the room include pegboard above the workbench, a computer desk for my design projects, the turtle tank is getting moved to another room most likely, and the floor is getting painted or epoxied.

The painting is almost done and the walls should be going up in the next couple weeks, so I will keep you guys posted.

Hopefully there are some gun guys here that can appreciate this project. I know it's a little different than the norm around here, so hopefully I don't catch any hell for it....but I figure the only difference from some of the other projects around here is that its smaller and not housing a car :p

Thanks...stay tuned.

That's looking good.

Californians are spoiled in a lot of ways -- but we drew the short stick on the basement issue. Almost none of the houses out here have full ones.

Thanks.

I'm going to try and go minimalistic with everything as much as possible. As you can see in the pictures theres a lot of stuff everywhere. Hopefully some different storage options will take care of that for me.

Ya Know Jack maybe if you guys actually had basements it would help lock your houses into the hillside and keep them from sliding off :D.

Thanks, paint is almost done, so I should have some progress pics in the next day or so. Also, I keep thinking about the bench and whether I should stain it, paint it, or leave it be. Any input from you guys?

Nice pup.

Is that pressure treated lumber? Doesn't PT lumber cause all sorts of hell if you get a splinter from it? If so you may want some sort of paint on it.

When i build my bench i intend to stain it. I think you should put something on it to prevent spill from becoming permanent.

Thanks, the one in my avatar is his new little sister. By the looks of your avatar, you have a good looking pup too.

Only the legs are pressure-treated. The rest is just good ol' untreated pine. I'm thinking either some polyurethane or fill the cracks on the top of the bench with wood filler and then paint it all a battleship gray type color.

It's not really important right now, since getting the room framed in and wired and everything is on the top of my list. Just thinking out loud.

What sort of stuff are you doing on the bench? Gun repair? Reloads? Going with a color to insure what you're working on you can see and/or find.

My vote is puttin' down some sort of stain, just b/c I like a more natural look of wood grain when if at all possible, but if you have any spills the el-natur-al look is forever gone.

Or maybe layin' down some vct tile or something similar might look cool as well.

My plan is to have a lower desk-height table for the reloading. I'll also have a computer desk (the one with the tank on it in the pictures) in the room. Additionally, I plan on building (or buying) another table with a butcher-block top for use as an assembly table. It needs to be smooth and easy to see small parts as you mentioned. The large bench I have now is going to be for doing the large, messy work. So it would probably lend itself nicely to being polyurethaned. In fact, I might end up putting a butcher block top on this large bench so all the tables match.

Like the post. Plan on doing something similar in our basement for my hunting and camping stuff.
Thought for the bench...put 3/8" furniture grade plywood on the top. Stain or poly it. Will give you a nice surface for working on.
