I still have some more of the radio equipment to break down. I have also thought of a really cool repurpose for some of the parts, but it is a secret for now.

I will post pictures when there is some more progress. I also sold some cabinets and a few other odds and ends the other day, they will be leaving this week. I need to spend some time listing things this weekend. Selling is definitely my achilles heel. At least I can recognize that fact. Now to power through it.

If you ever want to get rid of a Lista, or want to use your skills to benefit other people, I'm going to be building up my basement as an electronics testbed, and could use some cabinets. I'm a packrat (not as much as you), but I've focused my "collecting" on helping other people. I'm at the dump and peruse the good shed, and find a Kennedy cantilever toolbox, a little rust on one corner. What do I do? Bring it home, and trip over it for 3 months, then give it to an intern at work to keep tools in his POS Jeep. I feel good, he gets a useful toolbox, and I don't trip over it anymore.

I would not want to "enable" you by giving you some of my cabinets, that would be bad form. When you start your build, you should start a thread so we can see your mess too.

I tend to buy people birthday presents or christmas presents all year long, but when it comes time to give them, I can never remember where I put the gifts.

Just finished cleaning part of the mess up, now I need to load the truck with all the scrap. I also have to wire up my trailer for the lights so I can use it if needed. Maybe I will get all that done tomorrow.

I have a plan for these, they are kind of like server racks, except they were for radio equipment. I want to make a rack that will hold a bunch of the fishing tackle boxes like some of the other members have done. These actually have a bunch of heavy duty full extension ball bearing slides as well. I will see what I can come up with and update when I start.

I am looking forward to today, going to take it much easier on myself. I also plan on listing things on ebay and craigslist.

Are you finally staying in one place? Those damn sales always get me. My GF does the same thing, except she will talk herself out of way more things than I can.

Yes, we have decided to quit chasing and try to budget with what I make at the day job here. Our two oldest have graduated HS and are on to college. The other two are in Grade school and hs. The hs will graduate in another two years and the plan is to stay here until the youngest graduates hs. This is the school I went to so I have made a circle.

We have a garage around back filled to the ceiling. And my 28' car hauler filled the same so we are constantly digging/looking for things we know we have but don't know where they are. When we moved I was working so most of the actual loading and unloading was done by the kids and their friends so when it got unloaded It got stacked up and I have no idea where a lot of stuff went. Slowly organizing and finding things. I spent at least two hours last w/e looking for a roll of fence wire I know we have but wasn't sure where. Upside we run across a lot of other stuff and it gets "organized" or at least we kind of know where that is.

Now that summer is upon us and the kids have moved on I don't have the help I used to. Just takes a bit longer.

We just try to keep moving forward.

It is nice to have some stability, I only moved about 4 times growing up, it was definitely harder as I got older to have to change schools.

As for the trailer, at some point you may have to bite the bullet and go for a complete empty. It is hard to swallow, but it may also be the only way to actual know what is in there. I did this a couple weeks ago with the office trailer, I am still figuring out where stuff is going, but I got rid of at least a third of it. I am selling some, my GF donated a bunch to the local charity.

It feels good to be able to move around the shop, it keeps getting bigger as I clean. It is absolutely a back and forth battle, but I know it is getting better.

I should thank you. After seeing your outside piles everywhere, I took stock and realized I never want to have things get that bad. I emptied out the junk pickup, stripped what I wanted off it, and scrapped it. More to do, but a start.

I wasn't kidding about this. I stopped doing "work around the mess" projects and have concentrated on junk first outside and then inside. 900 more lbs of scrap went in last week and 500 lbs is ready in the trailer already. Cleaning up the mess inside by putting it outside is over with me.

Your Suburban full of cardboard is leftover osb and other wood scraps with me. I cleaned out that corner and will use the wood to construct storage shelves. Another problem solves itself and I gain space.

I didn't think you were kidding, but I am glad this thread can help. Sometimes all it takes is for "something to click" and then you get motivated.

Today was a lot less productive in the physical aspect, I had to do some ebay listings, but I am glad I got things listed. The radio equipment is all broken down, except the big transformers. They will not break apart, even with a 12 pound sledge. I tried cutting the copper with my portable bandsaw, but it was a pain. Now I have to rebuild my bigger horizontal bandsaw.

I figure it was one of my projects anyways, so I will make an attempt at working on it this week. I did not get my scrap all loaded, but I have about 300 pounds of aluminum and 50 pounds of copper, as well as 1000 pounds of regular steel.

So I've got to ask....
Did you buy this stuff to resell? ...and are there ebay/cl listings already out there?

Strouty,

Stop going to the salvage yard!

I all ready have a bid that almost pays for the entire trip to the salvage yard, I expect to make a lot more than that too.

I am looking at a lathe, hopefully I will be able to strike a deal tomorrow. If I sell all the items from the salvage yard, I should end up with my lathe for either cheap or free plus cash.

Here is one of the VFD units I got. I paid about $6 for it.

Please don't get me wrong. If you are buying things that you need or make your living selling on ebay or CL then you are doing good. However you need to liquidate all of the things that you are bringing in (unless you plan to use them).

If part of the lathe deal involves getting rid of other stuff in the garage/shop (like another lathe that doesn't work) then I'm real happy for you.

The new lathe is the twin to the one that did a face plant. I will be saving the best parts of the two and scrapping the rest.

Good news, the barcode scanners I bought for 50 cents a pound sold on ebay for $2500 last night. So now my lathe cost me about $20 with money left over. I am going to get the lathe today, unless of course it is not as the seller described, but he seems like a good guy. I will report back when I actually get it or not.

I will probably add some pictures. I think I will continue the original lathe thread so there is some closure.

I ended up with $311 in scrap this morning.

Today turned out to be a pretty good day. I went to pick up the lathe and it was better than expected, then I called another seller about a lista cabinet. When I got there he had a monster vidmar cabinet too. He wanted $1200 for the vidmar and $650 for the lista, I ended up with both of them for $1,100. I think this is a great price, not as good as some of the other GJ members have been getting, but respectable.

I ended up with one more stop, I was looking at an enerpac hand pump and some cylinders. He ended up having a bunch of hein werner rams and parts too. I bought everything he had, including the box (home made, but nice) for $550.

I even got everything unloaded tonight, so now the shop is a mess again, but at least I have a vision of the future. I will post some pictures of everything tomorrow, I was too tired tonight to get pictures.

Here is the truck all loaded with my finds.

This is the home made box that I bought with all the porta power stuff. Now I have to sift through all my other misc port power pieces and see what matches up. The orange pump is set up as a pull back ram, it has two hose, I have not seen this before.

so... you clear out a bunch of stuff only to fill it back up again? no offense i'm just questioning if I missed something because purging to refill isn't exactly clearing out.

I have been so busy that I had not been able to fully explain what has been going on. I sold a bunch of cabinets, shelves, and my old toolbox this week as well. It is really more of a transitional mess rather than a permanent one. I will update more about what is going on tomorrow.

Of course I came home with another truckload today. I will post info on that stuff later tonight.

So I seem to remember that the "goal" was to set your shop up and be able to use it. With all of this stuff going in and out have you had time to set anything up?

I see some the bins for storage in this last load. That will forward the "organization" goal that you laid out. I think I also see some 8020. That will come in useful but I'm not sure how that helps your goal.

Baby steps.

Overall there is less stuff in the shop now than there was three weeks ago. I have two more shelves to move out in order to get the new cabinets in place. I promise this is moving towards my goal, it is kind of like two steps forward one step back.

I wasn't even interested in the 8020 but when he said $100 for all of it I figured why not. The plymovent is going to replace a big bulky fume extractor. The air compressor I actually bought just for the motor and starter. I should be able to sell the compressor and get some money back. And who could pass up a 21 inch troyke rotary table for $175?

So most of that load is just to flip? The casters might be useful to move some of the larger stuff around without the forklift.

I think that there are several of us trying to help you keep your eye on the "organization" ball. We can't do anything about what you do but can remind you of the goal.

This is why your shop is overcrowded, not because you don't have enough space, or the right kind of shelving.

That may be blunt and rude, but it is the truth. I've read about 4 pages of this thread, but that is the root cause right there in your own words.

I suffer from it too, and it takes effort to overcome the instinct to buy something because "it's a good deal" or "I may need it someday".

Stop buying stuff, period.

Identify what you don't need, like really NEED. A project that you're "hoping to" ... "get around to" ... "soon" -- is not a need. Sell it, even if it initially goes against your sensibilities.

Organize the rest.

Don't buy anything else if you don't have a spot ready for it.

I agree, it is very difficult for me to not buy a good deal. A lot of times those good deals end up making me money. Luckily I do not need my shop to make money or I would absolutely be broke.

I do think having a place for a new item is the best policy, but I have not been able to get myself to stop completely. I actually have a "list" and anytime I find one of my "list" items for a "deal" I tend to jump on it.

I have been working on trying to understand the actual purpose of my shop. I have had health issues, (now they seem resolved) and things have been changing for me. It is hard to give up on my projects because I feel like I am failing. I have sold, trashed , and scrapped a lot of stuff in the last two weeks. I hope to get a better update this weekend.

I hope none of you guys reading this are giving up on me, I am improving and your comments are helping. Sometimes it just takes me a little longer than others.

I think that a lot of this stuff is acquired out of fear, I can't pinpoint what the fear is, but it just has that feeling. It is hard to let go, could be as simple as feeling like I will never get another one, but I can't figure it out.

That is why I like posting, I can look back and see what I was thinking. Plus I get a record of what things were like compared to what the are like now.

I get stuck on stupid tasks and sometimes I can't power through them. I can also see that I will sometimes trip over a dollar to pick up a penny.

When I was just starting out I had to have everything. ...and I ended up with half my garage full of junk. When my wife and I finally purchased a home we moved all of that junk with us. Now my son is in college and I'm getting time to really do some of the stuff that I WANT to do. So I started organizing the garage/shop. I found that there were many projects that I would probably not finish. Some I gave away, some I threw away, and some I still have. However as I am progressing I am enjoying the ability to finish projects. Some were started years ago. I just finished my panel saw project that has been sitting for about three years. It's nothing special but I had a co-worker that needed a bookcase real bad. That gave me a reason to clean up the woodworking shop and finish the panel saw.

A good deal that you have to fix up and might never get the time to complete is just a pile of scrap. Think before you buy. If you are not going to take it home, put it in it's place, make some minor changes, and use it right away then you will probably NEVER get it functional. If you are going to flip it then spend as little time on it as possible. Let someone else spend their time. Take the few pieces that you need off of the non-functional stuff, get it posted and sold. You will be much happier in the end.

Note that there IS a price for storage of all of the stuff that you have sitting around. You can put a dollar amount on it. If you were to take all of the lathe parts that you have sitting there and sold them could you buy a decent working machine? If you can then why don't you do it? All of the broken machines would than have given you what you really wanted. A working lathe.

Those vidmar cabinets you bought are really great, and they shine for storing small parts, especially hardware.....but you dont show you have a lot of that. Most of the stuff you've shown us would fit best in a 20 bushel box. I agree with some of the others, stop buying, period. There will always be "good deals", because there are plenty of other saps like us who finally figured out they have stuff they dont really need. You really need to identify exactly what you are working toward and focus on that....unless being the modern day Fred Sanford is where you want to be.
If you cant stop buying, as least buy stuff that will stack, or fit in your cabinets.
STOP buying stuff that takes up floor space! As has been mentioned, start going up.
I can feel your pain, but its a lot easier to point out your flaws that it is to fix my own.:)

The lathe that I just brought home is fully functional, the plan is to pull some parts of the twin that took a face plant and then get rid of the leftovers. I was actually hoping to try and start that this weekend, but since I unloaded my latest haul there is not a lot of room.

Finishing has always been an issue for me. When I ran my company I used to hire people that were "finishers". I did this because I knew it was one of my biggest flaws, now that my help is no longer around, it is visibly causing me problems. That is all in the past, now I need to learn to finish the projects myself.

As a borderline (or maybe full fledged hoarder), some of the issues are cyclical and some just compound really quickly, but they are all tough. Rational decision making goes out the door when I get into the "zone" of finding a deal. I am sure it is similar to a drug addict, it is definitely easier to say I won't bring home anything else than it is to do it. My GF can talk herself out of any deal, but I am just the opposite, I can see all the good uses and I will even make them up. I see the end result, even if realistically it would be ten years down the road.

Believe me, I have plenty of smalls as well as bigs. There is so much stuff that it would take me days to get pictures of all of it.

I am going to challenge myself to not bring anything else home for the next week, no buying, no freebies, no good deals. I need to start somewhere and I feel that is a realistic goal for right now.

I am also going to try and pickup one of my unfinished projects and complete it. Of course that being said, I guess if I need a part to finish the project, I will have to buy something.

So I will commit to completing one project next week, if I need to order any parts, I will, but nothing else will be bought, traded, dumpster dived, unless it has to do with that project. I will have to think about what project I want to tackle. I could work on the air compressor, or the lathes, I also have a drill press that needs attention, my rotary phase converter needs to be set up as well and I have a horizontal bandsaw that need to be fixed. I can think of a dozen more, but those seem like good candidates. The lathe and the compressor will gain me the most room when completed, so I think It will be one of those.

This sounds like progress to your original goal.

I sometimes find it useful to sit down and make a list. Usually I do that in Excel on the computer and categorize it (then I can sort it). Then I can decide what order the projects need to be done in. Do you need the rotary phase converter to run the horizontal bandsaw, drill press, lathe or compressor? If so either pick a different project or work it in as one of the steps to completion. Also do you need a small project to build up your confidence? You can always take a big project and break it into smaller steps. That will help you see that you are getting somewhere. You say that you will get lots of room back with working the lathe and cabinets. That might be a good place to start. However you started the storage room (I forget what you called it). You might want to finish moving the cabinets in there first. ....it's your shop so you need to decide what you want to do.

Another thing that will probably help... stay away from Craigslist, eBay and other sales sites. It will give you more time on your project but it will also keep you from buying more stuff.

I don't see a run to a store for a specific part as cheating as long as you are JUST buying that one thing (and maybe some minor stuff to finish more projects). However stay away from buying anything that isn't "on the list".

Is it bad that I don't have any real goals? Every time I hear people say make a list of goals all I can ever think of is to lose weight. When I think of a goal, it seems silly to set small ones, but I guess I need to start. Not setting any goals definitely hasn't work well for me.

The rotary phase converter is needed to run the bridgeport, the lathe, and one of my drill presses. Everything else is single phase. Except of course the new blower that goes with the plymovent, that is three phase as well. I may have a motor that I can swap in to make it run single phase, but long term I would like to have it on a VFD, it is only a 1.5 HP motor so it should be inexpensive.

The stock room and cabinets are always on the list, I am working towards that (as a goal I guess) all the time. Maybe I will start there, I know that I will not need to buy anything to get that done.

Another thing that I could do is set up the compressor that I just bought, that would allow me to sell my ingersoll rand compressor, then I will have the money to buy the other motor and starter for the big quincy compressor. I think regardless of what I do, I will list the ingersoll for sale on C-list. Would it be smart to list it on ebay as well, but local pickup only?

I did also forget about another ongoing project, wiring up my "wood shop on wheels". I may have to order parts for that one too. I am pretty sure that I know exactly what I need for that, so at least I won't be perusing any stores looking for fun stuff.

I don't usually have a lot of luck on eBay for pick up only items, I would give a week or so on CL, then maybe try eBay as a last resort.

Then again, I'm literally in the middle of no where, so CL is always tough for items that are not in high demand.

I don't really want to ship a big air compressor, but I guess I could look into what it would cost. Would you list the highest price or would you just say freight and it varies?

I would go with the contact "seller for costs" option, you at least have a fork lift so you will save at least $100 because you can load it on the truck, make sure you make it charge for the cost of the pallet and your time making a crate or strapping it down.

Some UPS locations will pack and ship freight items for you, but UPS freight is one of the highest. I have had good luck with pitt-ohio, very friendly staff, and the drivers are decent. I have found that the freight prices can vary, depending on destination, and if it is a residential, etc, so you may want to give shipping quotes on a case by case bases.
