We take it apart and he either stores it or sells it to another HAM buddy. It is a real PITA to get them apart and store them, I get paid to do it, so I don't argue.

I don't see how you do it, I am terrified in tall buildings with balcony's or see through floors...I can climb on the roof of my house and run around no problem but you get me 50-100' off the ground and my knees start shaking... I'm WAY more comfortable 50-100' deep in the ocean. :)

I couldn't fathom being that deep. It would bother me just as much as being 50' in the air.

I think I am going to start reconfiguring the shop so the stockroom is on the opposite end, this is the way I planned it in the future redesign anyways, but I think it will be easier to just start out that way. Have to do some figuring and drawing for sure. Will be looking at lista storage wall system for the entire stockroom. I think I can consolidate what I currently have into less space by using a combination of drawers, shelves, and pull out trays. The best part is that it will allow me to grow as needed. The initial cost will probably be a bit hard to swallow, but longterm it will be worth it. I am done trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

Just make sure you are not trying to put a really expensive square peg into an already crowded round hole. :)

In this instance I have to gauge it the other way. I don't want a really expensive place to put cheap junk. Once I figure out exactly what I want, it takes 30 days for the order to be ready. I guess between this stuff and the snap on box, I am relearning patience.

I need to get some more pricing, but it seems doable, especially if I sell almost all my other cabinets and shelving. The pain in the *** part is that I really need to wait until after the new stuff is delivered before selling the old stuff, otherwise I will really make a crazy mess. This is going to be an expensive year for sure. I will say that this winter, there will be no boats or other junk stuffing up the shop. It is going to be usable, that is my story and I am sticking with it.

There is no greater pleasure, in my book, than usable shop space.

I recently had that good fortune. It is so sublime, to be able to go in there and do something.

I took a small load to the scrap yard today, I used it as an excuse to find out how much my truck weighed empty as well. It was great, I took two five gallon buckets of miscellaneous hardware. When I dumped them out, I just closed my eyes, hardest thing I had to do all week. :eyecrazy:

It is supposed to rain tomorrow, so I had to get the suburban inside so I can try and fix the oil leak. I had to move a bunch of things and I found more stuff that I wish I had brought to the scrap yard. I guess that is progress. I need to take a long hard look at my hardware, I really think I will toss a ton of it (probably literally), I have a few bins that are sorted by car brand that I will keep just because they come in handy. The majority of the unsorted hardware is just taking up space and robbing me of time when I need to find something.

I know this is going to take a while to do, but starting on a plan is a step in the right direction. My Dad is supposed to come over to my shop tomorrow to see what cabinets he would like, then whatever he doesn't want I will advertise on craigslist, if they don't sell there, they will go to the auction.

I guess I can also list them for sale in the classifieds too. There is only one cabinet that I really want to keep, my older rotabin, it just has the cool factor. Depending on how I do the build, I may keep my two lista cabinets, that way I can use the drawers. I know that it will be way too expensive to buy everything I need at once, so using the drawers from those two cabinets will at least get me started (colors won't match at all). I figure when I can afford to buy the matching ones, then I can put the old cabinets back together and sell them as well. I need to find out how expensive the drawers are, I checked on the fixed shelves and the slide out trays, I guess I forgot to ask about the drawers. I also need to find out if they come with the tracks and rollers or if that has to be purchased separately.

Strouty,
Even though much of the shop is usable, I continue to simplify and remove things and organize and put things away.

Each item I come across, I ask: "Does this belong here?" "Can I do without this?" Or, "What the heck is it?"

Slowly and painfully it is becoming a place I want to be.

Agreed. The biggest problem I have right now is the fact that in another month (ish) I am taking delivery of a new toolbox. My tools a a real mess and I don't want to take the time to "organize" them in the old box. I am currently using several shelves in the stockroom and a couple of drawers in the big vidmar cabinet to keep them under control. I am still in the process of pairing things down. I was at an auction a few weeks ago and think I found a buyer for the remaining lockers (I really despise the lockers, no clue why), hopefully I can get some decent money. I figure while they are at my shop, I will show them a few other things as well. I have tons of unique stuff and they make fancy one off furniture for the hoity toity of the world.

I almost forgot, I scrapped an old electrical cabinet that I kept saying I was going to fix up and make into a wall cabinet. It is pretty nice not to be tripping over it again, plus I only had to move it one more time.

I hope so. Part of me says to stop thinking about organizing things totally. I know I will be much happier when I can find what I need without much effort. If I consistently did the same things it would be easier, but the fact that I will always be doing many different things makes me think this is the only way to shut my brain off. Then I can get back on target and move forward.

What's the old saying? "give me the strength to accept the things I can not change"

A lot easier said than done. But worth turning it into a mantra. :dunno:

As long as I don't go insane trying to make it the way I want.

I had the same worry...........until I realized I already WAS insane, and was just trying to work my way back to a sane and organized life!

One thing I notice is this. To begin with, everything was overwhelming. But as I have been attacking things, and getting areas more to my liking, the feeling of hopelessness has subsided.

And I have developed habits that keep areas maintained better.

When I go in a room, I see the things that are still out of order, and automatically pick up and rearrange or move some things. It's a habit now, and so things just keep getting gradually better and better.

Just remember that it's all in your head. You will reach nirvana when you rearrange your thinking and your habits, more than your stuff.

That was my point, my brain doesn't seem to be able to let things calm down. I live this 24/7 feeling like I "need" to be organizing the mess. Even when I am not there, a little voice keeps whispering to me "shouldn't you be organizing?" Kind of driving me insane and I am a little worried that if I get the place organized the damn voice is just going to start whispering something else.

We all hear the voices.

It's getting them to say what you want them to.......that's the trick!

I wake up each day with a million things that could "HAVE" to be done.

I quiet the voices by reminding myself that I lived through yesterday without doing them.

Then I can pick and choose what to focus on.

And if my internal voices are silent, I can always count on Julie to wake up from a dead sleep, counting out all the things I need to do...

Yesterday I was looking at some of the stuff I was moving, there was a milk crate full of commercial door stops all brand new in plastic bags. Then there was a huge tote of miscellaneous stuff left from the pallet of hardware I bought at the auction this summer.

I know I have too many of lots of things, so I think it would be best if I just started looking at the things that are triples and quadruples. Sometimes I like having doubles, so unless it is something that I never use, doubles is as low as I go.

That is pretty, but instead of listing useful specs on capacities and weight this is what they tell you.

"To put that into perspective, the locker can hold 40 cubic feet of storage. That’s enough space to fit 10 golf bags. With hardware that works as hard as you do, these cabinets were designed to take a beating. At just over 20 gauge steel thickness, the cabinet drawers & shelves are exceptionally strong and rated to hold more than you can possibly fit on them."

I would rather spend the extra money and have drawers that can handle hundreds of pounds for my eternity. The lista wall system is also easy to expand, so my initial purchase doesn't have to be a huge one.

Strouty: don't feel like the Lone Ranger in this organizing situation you are going through now. i'm in the process myself and i need to get my wife's car back into her part of the garage tonight or i'll be sleeping on the deck tonight. She knows i have 3 10 x 20 storage units and a 25 x 25 shop i lease so not too much sympathy from her side of the room.

just curious what price you got for your scrap when you drop it off? are you able to go through the scrapper's stuff to see if you can find an old gem?

take care and how's the leg?

Drives,

The leg is much better, just a bit stiff when I flex too far. Thanks for asking.

Scrap prices around here are terrible for light iron, $120 a gross ton (more than 2000 pounds).

I have a couple things to share, but it will have to be later when I get home.

Yesterday my Father came over for a bit, he essentially questioned everything that I was doing and why I was doing it. It turned into a good discussion about my shop and where I want to take things. I think I am ready to commit to moving forward at least in one direction, but it is not the direction I thought. We actually measured and laid out where I wanted things to go, he did not understand my overall concept, but now he does. He even thinks it is a good plan. So now my goal is to get the truss modifications figured out, then fix the roof. At this point I am still not sure if I will be installing a large dormer on the backside or not, so the plan is to buy metal roofing as a temporary fix. I wanted to use the corrugated metal roofing for my siding, so I will order it to fit my exterior sides, then once I figure out the whole dormer thing I can reuse the roofing as my siding. This enables me to fix the roof, but if I decide to dormer it later, I don't lose all the shingles and tar paper.

This all may sound crazy, but I am a bit of a loon anyways. The next step will be to move the stockroom, then modify the first 20' of trusses and install the big new overhead door in the end wall where the stockroom is. When I get some time I will draw this up and post it for you guys. It has been in my head for well over a year now and I think I just needed a push, well Dad gave me one.

Glad to hear you have a plan and direction to go. I'm sure it will work out for you Strouty.
Why not re-use material if you can. It's too expensive to just use for a temporary solution. I got a lot of **** from Rick while doing the "ceiling job" but I couldn't bring myself to just throwing away good material that could be re-used. I like to think of it as being smart and not cheap.:dunno:

Some how I missed several pages of this and had to go back and read them. I think your new plan is the right way to go.

My clean up is going slowly but it is getting better each time I visit the shop, Since the wife has gone to stay with her mother to the end I think I will be heading back to the shop tomorrow and unless I need to pack up the kids and go to a funeral I should make some more good progress. I "Need" to get more of the wood working side of the shop cleaned up so I can make a few things that are needed for the three season porch rebuild that we started last weekend. A tree had come down damaging the roof a few years back, then 2 winters ago the snow load took down part of the roof so it was a total tear down and now I have a nice clear deck to start over on.

It will be nice to have it back in shape and in a three season configuration instead of the screen porch it was before. My hording tendencies are helping out in this case though, I had picked up some windows for free and they have been sitting and waiting for this project for about 8 years.

As far as the voices in your head, mine never completely go away they just keep changing what they are saying depending on what I need to get done.

I won't be tossing anything, if you are talking about the temporary metal roofing it will later be my siding. If that wasn't what you meant, then I am not sure what you were talking about?

Thumper, the time is the hardest part. Half the time I have the money, the other half I have the time. For some reason they never seem to coincide, but I am going to work on that as well.

Drives and Nine, the only stuff I scrap is really junk. Between my auction selling, ebay, and craigslist it has to be pretty bad to end up at the scrap yard. This last round was an old microwave, rusty short cutoffs, the remnants of a john deere mower, and then some misc junk. I did get rid of the electrical box, but it needed to go to help my sanity. It must have had 15 holes cut in it from the previous application.

I was agreeing with your plan to reuse the siding. I think it makes sense to save when you can. I was just saying that I would, and do the same.

Got it, I was reading it wrong. You get your lift moved?

Not yet. I'm think I'll wait until the alignment lift gets here and then make the move.:dunno: At least all the work is done and we are ready to do it when the mood strikes. That turned out to be a lot bigger project than I expected.

The best part of that is when you get it done. It's a good feeling to know that it's behind you. I'm going to be in Portland Monday the 6th.(Drs. app.) and the wife will be with me, so if I can convince her to tag along, I'll see if you're going to be around. It would be a real short visit if it works out at all.
