Strouty, running that AC unit will mean a whole lot less rust in your shop.

I don't run the AC in my garage every day but often enough to keep it dry (and cool when I'm working out there). I started prepping the frame on my Corvette for paint in 2011 and it has been bare steel all this time. There isn't even surface rust after four years. I'm not in the "Rust Belt" but we're 1.5 miles inland from the Atlantic with almost constant ocean breezes.

My Dad keeps telling me that I should never turn it off and I think he is right, even in the spring and fall I had moisture issues. One point he made was that everything in the shop either keeps the heat (in the winter) or keeps the cool (now with AC) and acts like a radiator. I know it is a lot harder to get the temp back to comfortable in the winter if I have been gone for a while (I set it at 45 when gone), I am going to try and leave it on econ mode for a few days while I am not around and see what happens. I think 74 is a good temp overall. If I am really working, I can crank it up a bit and get some extra relief.

As far as not being in the "rust belt", I think of your area as the "rust hat", everything rusts from the top down, I think I would be in the "rust pants" area, as everything from the waist down rusts.

Funny you mention that. We lived in upstate NY when I bought a brand new 1968 GTO. I ran hot and cold water into the garage and washed the salt and slush off the bottom of the car every time it snowed. It still got some rocker panel rust but not as bad as most. We moved to Florida in 1975 and the roof of the car had rust breaking through the paint shortly afterward. Sold it in 1977 for $300 -- nobody in the US wanted a gas guzzler when gas hit $1.00 a gallon and nobody in Florida wanted a car with no AC.:shocking:

Just think if you still had that car, it would be worth at least $300.

I was beginning to think my buddy wasn't going to use me, but he just called and now I am going to go and service a generator with him. Not even sure if I am coming back to the shop, but my guess is I will be.

My goals changed when the temps and humidity started rising (adjusting priorities is allowed, right?), so the only thing I am avoiding is the heat, or at least trying to make it so I can avoid it.

Compressor is still high up there on the list, but tomorrow and Thursday I am out most of the day to make some money. My real goal should have been "to become more productive" and I am achieving that for sure. I also totally agree that once the compressor is done, a lot of other things will become easier for sure (like being able to use the plasma cutter again!). Adding exterior air would be a good idea, right now I am going to have to use the current setup (can go about 40' out the front doors), as the shop gets revamped and I put the compressor in the final location, then I will plumb exterior air. I have big plans, but I really do not know what my timeframe is because my work schedule is erratic and I really don't know how long it will take to do certain upgrades. Once I get the building drawn up and have the engineer design things, then I think I may be able to figure better timelines and placement of things. I should just draw up a rough design to show you guys what my plan is.

...Just for mdbeck1 I am going to try and finish up the pressure washer setup today. Of course I added to the list when I bought a 50' hose reel for it. That part can wait for a bit, I just need to be able to use it for the time being. ...

Temperature extremes can cause all kinds of changes in priority. I deal with them myself. This time of year we usually have 100F weather and unless you have AC in the shop it's just too danged hot to do much. ...and of course winter is coming and then it will be too danged cold...

As far as me poking at you I wanted you to realize that you can use these emerging priorities to justify spinning your wheels. I find myself doing it. Once I realize that's what I'm doing I sit down with my list and figure out what I REALLY need to get done. Usually it means getting back on an unpopular task and then I can go do something more fun.

You are absolutely right, and I wasn't trying to be mean about it, this time I would have rather been messing with the pressure washer more than those other projects. I figured sticking with them, as nasty as they were is going to be worth it in the long run. Looks like Friday is the day for the pressure washer.

How right you are, I helped my buddy do a generator service this afternoon, nothing special, but he wants me to be able to pick up his slack. I like the idea of learning a new trade anyways, now he would like me to do some more services with him on Friday and Saturday. Once again, plans foiled!

Today I have to go oversee an installation at one of our towers, not sure if it will be an all day thing or not. One of my "auction friends" may come down tonight to deliver some steel and pick up some I-beams. I am going to stop in and check on the air conditioner, but that is about it.

Sounds like a busy day. When you say our towers are they yours and your dad's or do you have other partners? Cell or tv or radio?

Since you still need a good compressor you might ask the guys you meet if they have or know of one since Craigslist doesn't seem to have many listings in your area. Before craigs that is how I bought a lot if my stuff that wasn't brand new.

Do you have a little playmate cooler to carry some healthy snacks or lunch?

Have a great day

Technically they are "His" towers, but he has had me essentially deal with everything from leases to construction for a while. I treat them the same way I would if I owned them and most of the time he never even talks with the customers, I handle everything. So in their eyes I am an owner, and my Father likes it that way. I own one tower personally, then I am a partner in one completed tower and another that is in planning stages. I manage the other six towers, we sold one last year and have a a couple others that are redundant at one of the other sites. All in all now I handle 9 towers and I am in the process of getting all of the leases and contracts in order. My Dad has neglected that aspect of it and we are finding lots of customers have not been following the leases, basically he is losing money because of non enforcement of the terms. It is probably going to take me until next summer before I have everything cataloged and organized, but it has been very embarrassing when a customer wants to come to one of the towers and I can't tell them where they can go without doing a lot of leg work. I should be able to look at one or two sheets and say, yes we have the 200' level available. I have to climb one of the towers next week to visually confirm a few things before the engineer can pass judgement on new loading.

I have been involved in the permitting process of the towers for years, a couple of our towers took about 10 years to get through al the permits and actually become reality. One of those was on an island where there are plenty of wealthy summer people that did not want a tower, but the year round community did, it was an interesting fight. Another one we had to get a seaside community to change the ordinance for towers to allow a 300' tower (current ordinance was for 100' tower). We had to go to many public hearings, one of them was at the school auditorium and there were a lot of people there.

Sometimes I wish I had become a lawyer, I enjoy the legal aspect of it and I have saved us thousands and thousands of dollars by doing all the legwork for our lawyer. I am always learning new things, sometimes I learn the hard way, but I do not forget and the next time I know what to expect.

Today the installation crew was trying to convince me that it was too hard to run the cable where I wanted it, I just looked at them and said "you see those other four cables? I ran those, so I know it can be done." That made them quiet down and in the end they said it was not as bad as they thought. There are very few tower managers that understand towers the way I do, this makes me a force to be reckoned with and my Dad respects that and trusts my judgement. I keep telling him that someone needs to understand all the aspects of the towers, because if something should happen to him, things would essentially turn to ****. My stepmother would look to me, but until recently I also had very little knowledge of all the happenings. There is so much info to keep track of, that my Dad has lost track of a lot. When we were doing a recent lease amendment, he could not even find the original lease or all of the previous 5 amendments. I had to get them from the lawyer that was handling things for the customer, luckily they provided copies to us. I now have a dedicated folder with all of the info on them, but this is only one of maybe 20 tenants on this one particular tower.

I's great you are able to take this on for your father and the rest of your family, I guess I am lucky that my father and mother are both very **** about paperwork, the few times I have had to get stuff for them I have been able to go to one of the file cabinets and find things quickly.

I am the same way on a much smaller scale thanks to computers and scanners, I only have 2 file cabinets totaling 6 drawers compared to my parents 15 drawers.

He has lots of paperwork, just not very organized. Each tower need to have at least one full drawer. One thing that has turned out to be very profitable is the blueprint collection he has. He has almost every print for the towers that the company has built. We have had more than one time sold copies of these prints to someone looking for them, usually the second or third owner of the structure. I have sold a few of them for $1000, some manufacturers charge double that and for a climber to recreate a blueprint is not usually 100% accurate and is very costly. I am going to have to create a digital copy of tons of paper, he wants the materials to stay at his office and I don't want to house all of it at my office as well. I figure I can keep the most important parts in paper form, then the digital will be searchable so I can dig deeper without going to his office.

This is what I do, every doc that I have gets scanned and put in the data base the only things I keep in paper form (they are digital as well) are doc's that have signatures, engineers stamps, notary stamps. In other words things that a digital copy is not considered a legal doc.

He has a pretty big office, so I may eventually set up a space there just for his stuff. His office is only 10 minutes from my house, mine is 35 minutes. I figure I can do most things with my laptop, just need a good wireless multifunction printer and I could do 75% of the stuff right there. I am sure I would need to buy some office supplies that he lacks, maybe another big two hole punch so I can use the fastener file folders, those are great for keeping things in order so the extra work of punching the holes is worth it for sure. Ultimately I think I can make everything digital, so I can handle things on the road as well, that would make my life easier as a lot of times I do not even know where I am going to be.

Looks like rain has changed my plans. I guess it is OK, I have plenty to do inside and of course there is the dreaded office work as well. I am going to try and do some one hour shifts, switching between office paperwork and shop work. Right now it appears that we may have rain for a few days, we need it, so I can't really complain.

I have a few errands to run before going to the shop, so I won't be there for a while. Probably should do a bunch of office work today, I had not realized how far behind I was until I started sorting through my emails. For me I need to learn to balance things, my whiteboard has a bunch of to do items on it as well. Now that I have the fans and the AC in, I feel I should be more constructive. When I was there for a few minutes yesterday it was really nice walking in and not having to worry about the humidity and not having to hear the old floor fan roaring.

Strouty: Thanks for 411 on the towers. If you do scan files to put on your laptop or iPad make sure to keep hard copies. You might also want to save to a stick or a total backup in case your laptop goes Mia like mine is doing this week. Do you have music in your shop or a DVD player and flat screen. I have a little tv with a VHS player to play movies I can listen
to or watch if I'm resting.

Have a great day

Drives, no TV, but the computer can play movies. I have a portable speaker, but I need to setup my stereo and the big speakers. I would like to be able to come in and turn it on, rather than have to worry about if it is charged enough to get me through the day.

I have always wanted to pull the sound from some of my favorite movies, so I could just listen too them without getting distracted by the video. I should look into that, it should not be that hard at all, I have well over a thousand movies in digital format all ready. I only buy my favorites on Blu ray, usually only collectors editions, I do have some TV series on DVD but only because they were not offered on Blu ray.

I always back up to multiple sources and most all of my important files are in the cloud as well as paper. Sorry to hear you are having a failure, those are never fun, even a little glitch can make a big mess of things.

If you have a stereo receiver, hook up a dvd player to it and you can listen to your favorite movies without having to watch them. I have a receiver in my shop but I use it for pandora radio on my phone.

What's a VCR?

Were you a betamax holdout?

I am going to put the recycling in the car to drop off on the way home.

My replacement knaack box is supposed to show up sometime after 4, I am going to unwrap it and make sure everything works before unloading this one.

I guess I will go mess with my tools, they are a bit scattered right now, all those projects I got done did not leave me a lot of time to organize things.

Let's see if this makes sense, today I had a plan, got almost nothing done. The days I was most productive I had no real plan, should I try tomorrow with no plan and see what happens? I am sure it is some form of procrastination on my part. I just find it odd and annoying.

Knaack box was delivered in 97.5% perfect condition. There were a couple scuffs and some paint was scratched, but all of that is going to happen the second I use it, so I just accepted it as it was. The driver said I didn't have to, but I really wanted the entire ordeal to be over. This gets it done and I don't have to worry about anymore freight shipments for a little bit.

I just finished going through this thread top to bottom in the last few days; the progress you've made on such a huge volume of stuff is really remarkable. There were times early on (like when you bought the machine surface grinder) that I wondered if you could beat the hoarding affliction. But, when you started taking whole truckloads to scrap last fall I knew you were going to make it; obviously you buy lots of stuff for flipping purposes, but scrap is scrap, and it seemed like you really got moving once you embraced that. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Mod, as the title says something really did click, more like a progression of them. I am still working on it and I probably always will. It is a balancing act and it definitely has ups and downs. I appreciate you taking the time to read the thread, when I go back through it I think who is that crazy guy, then I realize it is just me. I am honored to have 50% of your posts after two years of lurking! (seriously that is cool)

Nines, you have hit the nail on the head, I have been practicing anti-perfectionism. I may even go as far as saying I am a recovering perfectionist. I just take it one day at a time and if I fall off the wagon, I get back up.

Strouty: I've seen a few great posts by you on the LURKING thread and wondering what's been going on at the shop? or are you posting from on top of a pole again?

I have got nothing to report. I spent the weekend helping around the house and the last two days doing paperwork at the house. I am headed over there tomorrow.

I have been neglecting the shop, today is the second time that I have been here since last weekend. I have a bit of a mess to clean up as well as dealing with too much paperwork. I spent yesterday on a tower and now I have found even more work that needs to be done.

I have been on a consolidation kick at the house, so I may end up doing a bit at the shop as well. I think overall I was trying to concentrate on too many things and everything was suffering. I am going to focus on less and deal with quality versus quantity. With all the work that needs to be done, I am not sure how I will accomplish it all, trying not to stress myself out too much.

I made a list of things that need to be sold, need to get trashed, need to go in the scrap pile, need to get moved. The tower I climbed yesterday was about 460 feet and I have not climbed that high in several years. My arms are still sore and I think today is about over for me, tomorrow I will be back at the shop and ready to list some ebay items as well as craigslist stuff. I really want to have things cleaned up for Monday, so I can try and get a few things done in the office and the shop. I really feel like I did nothing last week, but after looking over all the things I got done, I guess I did much more than I thought.

I may get some string beans in honor of the ones DLC murdered, but I will make sure not to get the assassin beans.
