Wanna, funny part is the various colors did not bother me that much, but other things would drive me insane.

Thanks Richard, they are very nice and versatile as well. I wish I had done this sooner.

It is a sickness, I am figuring that I will slowly be switching all of my 12" shelving over to the 22" lista storage wall. Maybe do a section a year and then I can have pullout shelves and drawers as well as the fixed shelves. We will see, some of the stuff I keep does not deserve that treatment, but it will make it easier to get to and that is my main goal.

Strouty: while i like the old cabinets you like a lot i agree having new walls of Lista in your shop would be AWESOME.

hope the snow, rain and cold weather hold off a little longer so you can get some of your jobs finished.

cheers

Thanks guys, I really think the Lista wall is the best of everything in my situation. Of course when I need to move it, I may be cursing up a storm. That is a long while from now, so I am just going to enjoy it for now.

Yesterday I took the day off, my elbow was killing me and everything seemed to make it worse. Today I have to finish prepping everything for the tower extension tomorrow, hopefully I can get it all done in one day, but I may have to finish up things on Friday, the weather is supposed to be showers in the morning with a better and drier afternoon. We will see what today brings, I bet the forecast will change this afternoon.

I just got to find out that it really hurts if you put a couple fingers in a jawhorse vise. "Just the tip" has never been so unpleasant.

Now I am at half speed, if that, of course I am in the middle of some fab work for tomorrow's job, so no big deal. :willy_nil

Can't count the number of times I have worked through pain, dripping blood etc.. When dead lines are hovering.
My wife once made the comment " why do you only hurt yourself when working on other people's stuff"

I don't know if it was the almost instant Ice I put on it or the 800 MG of advil, but it is not swollen, definitely black and blue under the nail and sore to the touch. I must have caught two finders, because the knuckles hurt from where I twisted quick to get them out. Oh well, got what I needed to done, going to go out for dinner, not sure where, but I am going to sleep early tonight.

I will be on the job all day tomorrow, so I may not post again until Friday. I will try and take some pictures, if it is raining I will probably only take a few. Have a good night guys.

Been there, done that, don't want to do it again, the guardrail won.

Now it looks like the wind may cause more grief than the rain, I have the crane coming later in the morning, so hopefully as the rain passes so will most of the wind. Hope everyone has a good day.

Finger is as good as I could expect it to be. I really did not get the nail as much as the finger itself. It never really swelled up, but it was pretty sore today, feels tender, but I am able to use it to type.

The job turned to absolute ****, the "antenna guy" handles all the antennas, well he shows up with this antenna that I had said NFW I would ever install it on the top of the tower. Then the antenna guy tells me that I agreed to it, once again we have a serious issue. I told them I would install the tower extension and deduct the antenna work, but they would not agree. So I suggested side mounting the antenna instead of top mounting it, I also said we would need to only extend the tower 30' instead of 40' and I would have to move the guy wires closer to the huge antenna. In the end they agreed and we got the tower up, I had to make some custom mounts to hold the antenna, so we did not get everything done, now I have to go back tomorrow and finish a bunch of stuff that should have been done while the crane was there. I am not happy about this at all, no way to charge more, or at least I won't get paid for more if I try and charge more. I hate jobs like this, thrifty municipalities with unrealistic budgets yet they expect to get twice what they pay for.

Sorry for the rant.

One thing I noticed in my garage is there is not enough wall space. You have your overhead door, a side door, a couple of windows, maybe an air compressor and a car shoved back in a corner, the first thing you know you have no wall space for shelving. My work garage is 32 x 40 and still no open wall space.

For anyone building for car work make it at least 44 feet deep. Two full size cars barely fit.

Wow. That's about all I can say right now. Just read the whole thread and am very impressed, both with where you've started and where you are now. The change in mindset is very apparent based on your more recent posts. I'm definitely following along. Thanks for sharing everything with the group. Your thread is literally a garage journal. Keep up the good work and excellent documentation.

Thanks,
Bob

Padroo, I could not agree more. My Father has a shop that has an addition on it, so there is a wall up the middle of the two bays, it gives him twice as much wall space. With my current shop I am thinking modular and mobile, so everything (except the stockroom) will be on wheels or raised up so a pallet jack can grab it. I will be able to reconfigure things and clean things very easily. I wish my shop was deeper as well, if I ever get (wait, when I get to) the modifications, it will make a 45' deep bay. I think that will be much more versatile than the current setup.

Bob, Thanks for taking the time to read the thread, it certainly has been a journey. I am really looking forward to this winter, there should be much more progress. When I started this thread, I had no idea how intertwined my emotional, mental and physical states would be, I just thought I was going to change my "warehouse" back into a shop. I am glad I posted, even the mundane tasks, it has kept me motivated when I wanted to give up or give in and now I am starting to see things come together.

I have to make a quick stop at the shop to pick up some supplies and tools so I can finish up yesterday's fiasco. Hopefully I will be able to get it completed so I can bill out the job and move on. Next week I start another job, at least the new job has no middleman so I know what to expect. Hope everyone has a good day.

Too bad that happened to you Strouty. It ***** to have to work for nothing. And don't you love it when people don't listen. That drives me crazy when I've talked to someone and later they claim ignorance. When that happens, I also claim IGNORANT.

It pays to stop sometimes, and look back at where you started. You will be surprised at how far you have come. It does help to post your progress, each and every little step. It mostly helps to plan, focus and note your work as it progresses. It really doesn't matter if others comment, but if they do, their helpful suggestions can aid the progress.

Strouty: i'm not sure what the situation or communication was prior to the install yesterday, but as painful as it was or still is learn from those situations so next time it will be different. maybe you or they assumed something and better communication might have helped or know when you deal with this client that everything needs to be in writing on a contract or email.

one thing you said a last year that stuck with me is being able to move some of my heavy cabinets or benches around the shop with a pallet jack and it's a great idea.

have a great day and hope the weather cooperates. rainy and windy here in Seattle today and your weather sounds about the same. good luck

I got the tower all done, but still have a couple antennas to install. I should be able to finish that on Monday. It was chilly and windy today, luckily no rain. What I did today would have taken about two hours in the man basket with the crane, but because of the antenna issue, we ran out of daylight. Anyways, the tower is plumbed and the wires are tensioned, so I know it is now as safe as it can be. The rest of the work should only take half a day, but who knows, I will find out on Monday for sure.

Tomorrow I need to go and pick up a trailer that has some hydraulic issues, hopefully that goes smoother than this project. Then maybe I can get some stuff done around the shop. Not sure what is going to happen, my GF is a bit distraught because she had to put one of the cats down today, so I have to be a little gentle and help out with anything she needs.

Thanks Lane, any chance I can see that cart you were talking about? Not that I need another project but I always love ideas. We will have to get together at some point soon. Hopefully before the white stuff sets in.

Speaking of white stuff I have to get the snow plow going. I bought some parts the other day and need to rewire the starter and dump body pump.

Seeing it before the white stuff flies would be good - at the moment I don't keep that place plowed in the winter . . .

An afternoon during the week would probably work well for me. Let me know when things lighten up for you.

So Saturday turned into a cluster of nothingness that took all day to complete. I gave up on Sunday and just stayed home. Today I have to get things prepped for the (hopefully) final work on the tower extension, just need to install the remaining antennas. I am also trying to load a shed onto a trailer and get the excavator to the next job. Then I have to order rebar, make forms and just all around do more work than one person can handle. Nothing big, typical mess for me. There are also another hundred things to do, but they do not matter as much right now.

I got some very important paperwork off to the engineer for one of the towers, I got Bev unloaded and then loaded the suburban for tomorrow. I have not yet put away all the tools, but I am planning on it after lunch. I may try and get one of the compressor pumps installed, would be nice to get moving on that, but it has not been a priority even though in the big picture it is pretty important. I know I will need it when I start reworking Bev's body, because I will need the plasma cutter and air tools. Seems like overtime I set a goal for the compressor it gets lost in the shuffle, kind of like I am avoiding it so no deadline or goal, just a acknowledgement that it needs to be done. Probably reverse psychology doesn't work on yourself, but who knows maybe my multiple personalities don't talk to each other?

The plan now is to have the tower foundations in before Thanksgiving and then pick up the towers the first week of December. This will allow me to get working on the top of the tower and modify it as needed for the rotator and mast mounts, then get it galvanized and Hopefully installed before Christmas.

I also have three other jobs going, but some of that is being subbed out, not that I don't still need to be involved, but it takes some of the burden off me. Then there is the regular stuff at the shop, the holiday stuff, and the unforeseen stuff. I rewrote most of the items on my white board and I have entered important milestones into the calendar, so assuming things continue on at a good pace, I should be able to meet these goals. I know I can adjust as needed, but I would much rather have it go according to plan, then I don't have to scramble too much. I am sure there will be some extra stuff thrown into the mix, I am figuring that snow is going to be one of them, hopefully it will be after Thanksgiving and the foundations will be all backfilled. That would be awesome.

I also wanted to post a few pictures of the tower extension, I know people were asking questions about it, if you still have questions ask and I will try and answer them this time. This is a rinky dink tower, 12.5" width and it is now 110 feet tall. They wanted it 120 feet tall and then wanted that massive antenna to be mounted on top so it would have been 140' tall, I told them NFW and this is what we compromised on.

Before the guy wires were added.

With the wires installed. This raises the wires up so they can push snow through the area without getting hung up on them.

Overall view of the tower from the back anchor.

Safety rope (red) and load line (white).

New anchor.

Rooftop anchor.

Original anchor setup.

Before reinforcement.

After we added extra bracing and some 3" aluminum angle irons.

Strouty,
I'm curious.

Who takes responsibility for the tower design.

I know that the size of antenna(s) affects what wind force the tower will withstand.

Who signs off on a tower extension like the one you showed above? Is it sometimes on the owner? Is there ever a warranty provided by an engineer or other party?

Strouty, thanks for sharing pics of your tower extension. Interesting for sure.

Our comms network has a number of guyed towers similar to yours that our team maintains. In all we have in the order of sixty communications nodes with single 100 foot pole type masts and some 12 or so primary comms towers that host a variety of gear, such as microwave links, primary and secondary 900 and 450 MHz radio links, spread spectrum stuff, voice comms stuff.

Good work.

How many have you replaced, from being taken down?

A customer of mine, i replaced his boiler, backed down the driveway in the dark.

I herd a noise, like pushing a grocery cart with rusted wheels lol.
I got out of the truck 3 times, couldnt see anything. Finally the tower came crashing down....I felt horrible, the owner came out and was like "not again"..iwas like "what the fu$$ not again".
The tower has been ripped down 5 times in 20 years. One guy wire ran across the driveway, were anything taller than 8ft tall would hit it.

I have a box truck, so pulling in. It didnt catch, but backing out, the roof rack caught the cable.

I felt horrible, and the guy had a 68 camaro ss sitting rite were the tower landed, luckily he moved the car before i hit the tower. No that i say that...he may have wanted a new tower covered under my insurance....he never said anything to me about the wire...and he said the tower lands there everytime..

Bill, This one is all on me, they did not want to pay for engineering so I did all of this from experience. With the Rohn 25 towers there are several basic designs for the foundations based on heights. I know what needs to be done and that is why I took issue with the antenna that was dumped on me at the last second. The tower itself has no rating for ice, just for wind load. So if we get a bad ice storm the tower could have an issue and I told them that in advance, I am not that worried about this, I have been doing this for a long time and I probably have double the safety factor that an engineer would have. In these situations overbuilding is cheap insurance.

1/2 cup, no problem, I will try and post some more when doing the other towers, they are much more rugged than this one.

Nines, thanks, Bev is going to get hacked soon. I am making her into a fifth wheel style hauler. The box you see will be removed, but I will make it so that I can easily set it on the back or on a trailer so I can have a nice walk in job site box. The truck used to be a 16' beverage truck and I cut it down and reworked it to make what you see. I will detail the progress on that in here a bit, but I started a thread just for the transformation a while back, just haven't done anything much yet.

Truckman, they are still worried about the plow guys hitting it, but I did the best that I could. It is about 10' to the wires when you are right at the pole, I guess they could always hit the pole, but at least I tried.

Craptain, it will start looking different soon, I am taking it to Kentucky to get the towers for the next job.
