Strouty: probably one of the reasons i haven't started welding yet. i know practically zero about all the safety issues. i'm almost afraid of an automatic helmet in case it fails so wondering how safe they are or do you and others just change the glass like the old timers did (do)?

hope you feel better as the day progresses.

I have never had an issue with the auto darkening helmets, this was operator error, luckily it was only about 20" of weed and not a huge job. Although I would have probably figured it out sooner if I had welded any longer. I have only had it happen one time before and I was 17 and had never welded before, but I had seen it done. I just remembered that I was not supposed to look at the flash. When I started trying to weld, it kept getting stuck (stick welder) and I finally took the helmet off, but I made sure to close my eyes when I started to see the flash. It burned my face and my eyes. Not fun at all, this is no where near as bad, but it still hurts.

Yup, I would not wish it on anyone. I am having trouble now keeping my eyes open without pain. GF is coming to get me and I will take a nap, if it ends up getting worse then I may have to get some drops, hoping the advil will help with the swelling. This weekend is officially over. :(

Does your company build transmission towers?
I worked as an electrician for Bonneville Power in the northwest. Put a few towers together for line drops into a substation. Most or the tower work was the responsibility of the linemen.

Hope you have a nice weekend resting. Don't forget to hydrate.

Sorry DFA, Rich is correct. I do more communications towers, the lineman unions would never allow us to touch those towers.

Things are much better now and I hope to be almost back to normal tomorrow.

Stouty, the old timers who taught me to weld always cut a potatoe in half and put one over each eye cut side towards your eye obviously! Don't ask me why, but for some reason it had a soothing effect for flash burns!

I got it several times from welding inside covered conveyors from the reflection bouncing around! Finally figured to put a drape on the back of my helmet!

Dodge, it is a good trick, it cools things down and takes away the pain. Luckily it is not that bad. I think if I get a good nights sleep it will be bearable tomorrow. I am wearing sunglasses right now while in the dark with the screen dimmed.

Rich, I was never going to test you guys, but you were definitely paying attention.

Nines, really sorry to hear about your condition.

The eyes feel much better so far, no feeling of sand in them anymore. Of course the sun is not up yet so that may make a difference, but I am going to try and get some stuff done this morning at the least.

Good morning Strouty.

This time of morning, the day is full of promise, isn't it?

What's the plan today?

I'm working to wrap up the yard work.

Bill, I need to unload the forklift and move the volvos to the back forty for their winter slumber. I think most depends on how my eyes do outside in the sun. I need to change the battery in the dump truck, then get it inside so I can replace the alternator (probably a full day job on its own). If I can get those things done today, I will be more than happy.

Hope you get a bunch done.

I tend to be too ambitious in thinking what I can get done, and am then disappointed that it all didn't get completed.

So now I try to be happy with what I do get finished, while also striving to do more and better.

Bill make smaller goals, then have a stretch goal. I have found that works for me. I then go out and figure out my next day goal and a stretch goal. You will be surprised how well it works.

So I took a couple of days off and am trying to catch up. Nice to see you got the building moved and the extension forks are interesting. In a former life I drove a forklift at a lumber yard. I learned that the first time you lift something just slide the forks under it and tilt it back a little bit. If the rear end comes up it's too heavy to lift. Above all BE CAREFUL.

As far as the yard. I hear you about needing a survey. I would make an intermediate plan. There's a couple of ways to handle that. 1. Put the stuff in a smaller area that makes it easier to find what you need so that you can move it later. OR 2. Place the stuff somewhat near where it will eventually go then move it when you get your final location defined. It's sounding more like you need to do number 1 and keep your eye on the idea of 2.

Whichever way you go on the yard make sure that you set up the material to be picked up with the forklift. It will make your life SO much easier.

It looks like things are slowly going your way so don't get in a hurry. ...and keep part of that shop open so that when the white stuff comes you can get some "inside" stuff done.

The eyes did not cooperate today, but right now they feel almost normal.

MB, the fork extensions worked well, good tip about tilting back to see if it gets light in the rear. As far as the yard, I am planning on making everything easily movable by the forklift. I should not need much of anything until next year, after the snow melts.

Strouty looks like things are clicking along, stuff is getting done.

I had a light bulb go off over my head this weekend "Sometimes you need to make a mess to clean up a mess" (More on that in my thread)

After seeing all that you have gotten done with the new fork truck I am looking for one now too. What is the make and model of yours?

I have nothing to report, the eyes really got me down, now I have to get myself back up and going again. It is amazing how easy it is to knock me down 10 pegs.

Sorry to hear about the welding flash, haven't had a bad case of it myself in many years.

The last one was when I was building a boat lift for my buddy in his shop that was lined with white tin, walls and ceiling, I got it from the reflection of the arc off the ******** walls.

In the past I always made sure to have at least one paying job each week, that made me get to work. Once I was back at it for the other guy it gave me energy and motivation for my own stuff.

Now for the rest of the story,
When Yakima went from Jail to Dept. of Corrections they put these out as surplus, so at the auction I purchased a Refer box full of these jump suits for 50.00 We sold a bunch of them for 10.00 each for Halloween. I still have a few left over.

We had someone here wear one on Halloween. They were arrested and spent the night in jail. Turns out that the jumpsuits were stolen from the county jail.

Strouty,
I know how you feel. If we were on the hoarders group I am on, which is all women, I'd give you a hug, but we're on GJ!

I've had a few instances where I was physically set back by an injury or illness or physical problem. It knocks the psychic wind out of you to realize you are so fragile. Kind of turns your world upside down. You thought you were so tough and strong and able to do anything. It does make you appreciate what abilities you do have.

Right now my eyesight is getting much worse. For someone who draws, this is the worst horror. I just looked through some good Jap binoculars, and realize how bad it is. But I can still get up in the morning and do the things that need doing.

This too shall pass.

Give yourself a minute or two, to get over the shock and dismay.

You'll soon get back in the saddle.

Sometimes I get down for the better part of a week, due to some disappointment or other. So I let myself stew until I just get disgusted with myself for wasting time.

Then it's back to it!

I hope that I am sufficiently disgusted with myself, because this week has been a flop. The only saving grace is it looks like next week will be decent as well. Thanks for the "push" and motivation.

That requires getting on the computer, changing the size of the pic, then uploading to the site which may not sound like a lot but I haven't spent. 5 minutes on the computer in weeks. That said, I do need to get on there this weekend if I get time to do some other photo editing so when that happens I'll do the avatar too. Trust me , I've wanted to change the avatar for a year now. Priorities....
