Capability can be a curse. For example:

Strouty wants longer forks. They are available to purchase but...

Strouty has welding skills and scrap metal so he is capable of making his own but..

The welder is blocked and out of service but...

Strouty's dad lets him borrow his welder so he's still capable of making his own but the unfamiliar mask results in burned eyes.

This isn't criticism at all, only an attempt to look at the potential "cost" of capability. Less capable men would have been stymied by those hurdles.

In fact, here is my own example of being cursed by capability. I just moved to a new place. I had to move from two locations into one and have years of accumulated 'valuables'. A great friend flew out to help me move everything and the new property came with a nice building so I was then capable of taking all my **** with me.

Had I not had the help and available space, I would have been forced to purge. Instead, here is me two weeks ago...:)

Don't worry, it's a temporary way station and will be cleared out very soon.

Realizing I have collected things as if I had a 40x100 pole barn instead of a 40x100 lot.

Anyway, I'm cluttering up Strouty's thread, just like my yard, so back to it.

If you were English it wouldn't be a yard or a lot, it would be a "Garden" an outside space to relax enjoy good weather and perhaps cultivate some flora.
Maybe a rose isn't a rose by any other name :headscrat

You guys are all encouraging me, thank you for all the posts. Since I have had terrible motivation in the last week it is really helpful. My GF is going with me this afternoon to unload some stuff and get the tractor trailer back home. That will be step one. The weather is not so good for the next couple days so I need to do half a day of paperwork and at least another half day cleaning the shop from the whirlwind of activity. I will update tonight and respond to individual posts. Have a great day guys.

And I need to get started on cleaning my garage again. After I got it clean enough to put the car in I kind of quit working on it. Now I need to start on the other side. Rich

I guess we're all in kind of the same boat, more or less. My back 24' x 24' garage is filled with all the shop stuff and the on-going Impala project, shed is full, front attached garage has my wife's car and car parts that won't fit in the back garage which are destined for the Impala, the basement workshop, yep, more Impala parts.
Reminds me of a joke I heard, probably here on Garage Journal, maybe even from one you guys:

You might be a gearhead if your wife says to you, "I want to take a bath, will you please move this transmission!".

We would also know that she is a keeper if she knows it is a transmission!

Spent the afternoon loading up all the miscellaneous antenna mounts that were floating around, they are spending the winter on the trailer my Dad wants to store at my shop. I ended up taking out some stumps and clearing an area specifically for the trailer, now it is out of the way for the winter and I have all the mounts in one spot. They are a royal PITA to move around, once I get some galvanized banding then I will band like ones together on pallets, but the regular steel rusts and bleeds onto the galvanizing and then they look like they are old and damaged. I am going to try and get a few things done on the forklift, like the lights, so I can see after dark.

Here I will post a few pics of the progress I/we made on the last trip to the shop.

Well I guess I only took one of the completely cleaned up table saw. Thought I took a few more of the other areas where we made progress.

We also cleaned up the area around the wood lathe and the miter saw bench so that the boy could work on some x-mas gifts.

That included several boxes and bags of burnables out to the burn pile and 2 bags of either real trash or stuff that we no longer wanted and are not worth selling/trading.

Thumper, It looks like you have made real head way...

Thanks we have! Quite proud of my oldest who has been helping me more and more.

I really think that after we get a few more projects out of the way like the truck that is taking up the service bay for 2 months we should be able to finish up and have a clean working shop again.

Most of it came down to finding better ways to store what we need and getting rid of **** that was doing no good.

The new tool box bench and more shelving and cabinets have made huge difference. Along with that last weekend I gave him the Kennedy box that I picked up last summer which he removed the wheels from and was able to tuck under one of the benches for his tools.

Another thing that has made a huge change is being able to get to all the shelves and storage areas to put stuff away where it belongs, I/we are not so temped to just set something down now.

Strouty: you ok? You seemed to have gone MIA from both your threads? Hope its because you are just busy and not upset from some other member's comments.

Things at the shop have been moving forward nicely.

Thanks for the concern guys, have been dealing with some personal issues unrelated to the garage.

I did spend the afternoon with my Dad today and we got the two volvos planted, I also moved one suburban. Then we tackled the conex, it is not in a permanent location, but it is in much better place for the winter. I won't be doing much for a while, so I may be absent. I will try and update with some pictures this weekend.

To confirm, no one said anything that made me disappear, so no worries that way.

or work in a high security medical lab.
You know how life seams to go in circles. A few years ago, We took the company logo's off all our rigs. They told us to get a clip board and a tape measure for each rig and put in the passenger window so our white vans looks like what most contractor use, They were afraid that some one might hi jack one of our rigs for the meds we carry.
Now they have just had all of our rigs painted and new decals. Go figure.

Strouty,
I haven't commented for quite awhile now but I regularly follow your thread. You may not think so at times but, as others have said, you have really made a lot of progress from when you first started. Keep up the great work.

And since it seems there are many of us that have similar issues with getting things organized (and then staying organized when/if we get there) I saw this book:

http://www.powells.com/book/the-lif...ampaign=pbnews_20151209&utm_content=TidyingUp

I realize the author is referring to tidying up the house but I wonder if this concept would be useful in the garage and shop. I haven't read the book, only looked at this web page, but the one thing she said that really struck me: "get rid of things that don't bring you joy". I don't know, I may have to read it. I'd be interested in what others think.

I read your post and decided to get it for my kindle. It is actually very intertesting if a bit weird at times. It has got me all enthused again anyway....

I hope Strouty is doing alright. I really don't like it when a member goes into hiding.
Last time that happened it was Bull when his wife left him. Not good guys. We need to find Strouty.... We need our anchor. We are drifting in this sea of internet and not even the Captain can help....Help us Strouty

This is so weird we have been on the same page for 3 days, usually I have to go back at least 1 to get caught up.

Times 2 on the need to have Strouty around.

Still alive, the personal issues are going to be here for the foreseeable future, so my posting and garage work may be limited. Here are a couple pictures from last weeks effort, I did not get much in the form of progress shots, with my Dad helping me I did not have much time to think about pictures.

Today I spent another afternoon with Dad's help and got some more stuff moved, he spent most of the time leveling areas up with the excavator, but it is all moving things in the right direction. I spent a ton of time with the forklift moving steel and getting things put out of the way of snow plowing. Of course it didn't help when a joint decided to implode, now I have only front wheel drive until I fix it, hopefully it uses common truck parts instead of one off forklift parts. Anyways, I got the box trailer lined up next to the conex, I figure it is the best place for the winter. These pictures were the morning starting point, I ran out of daylight to get the final pictures.
