I definitely feel like things are getting better, I still have a long way to go and my personal baggage is going to get in the way. I am glad I have this thread to share with you guys and for myself, so I can look back and see what I have accomplished. It is far too easy to forget where you started when tackling something like this. I am headed home, my procedure is at 8:30 AM, so I have to get up early. Talk to you guys tomorrow, hopefully without too much pain.

Well that's a twin needle, nice! I can't tell models but there should be a number plate on the front of them. That looks like a nice heavy walking foot industrial machine, what are your plans for them?

I would like to sew with them.

Sorry, I could not resist. I want to be able to make some bags and maybe other things. Not sure if they will sew leather, but that would be cool too. I will try and get more info at some point, they are much easier to access now that I don't have **** everywhere.

They should both sew leather no problem, that one has dual needles though so it has limited feet options. You can sew with single or double needle with it, but with the wide foot it makes it hard to sew some things. If you have any questions on them, I'd be happy to help.

Nines, once I get them completely cleared off, I will get better pictures.

Thanks Kay, it was another one of my whirlwind sessions, now we are back to ho hum while I wait and see how long the elbow is going to take to heal.

Maybe when you get them set up, we can try to sew up my seat cover for the Delta. I can't hire nines to do it, I guess he doesn't need any extra money.:lol_hitti

The shop is looking ever better and organized. You are making great progress so I hope those finished tasks do help you fell better about it.
Very cool to see the compressor running and in a good spot under that rack. I do have to ask about the 4 gang drill press though. Are you really going to need something that big? What are the plans for that?

RM, The 4 gang only takes up a small area, it is about the dimensions of two drill presses sitting next to each other, because if its height it seems much larger. I am going to set it up and get it running, then decide what to do. I will probably toss it on ebay with a high price and if someone pays it they can take it.

Maybe Nines can teach us how to do upholstery.

Dan, thought we discussed the seat? You would need to carefully remove the old cover and ship it to me, then pray I can make a pattern from the old stretched/shrunken pieces. I can make a cover that will fit but without the seat it may not fit like a glove.

Strouty, I'd rather one good drill press than that quad DP. You are very limited to what will fit under them. If you made production runs on small parts that needs multiple drilling it would be handy, now it's just large IMO.

Nines, I will have to take some better pics of the quad drill press, it has a lot of adjustability. The table goes up and down, the drill heads go up and down, it definitely is not as versatile as as a single, but it will fit about anything that I have ever drilled. Plus I have the small powermatic and the bridgeport! The thing that I like about the gang press is that it has the big table and one head is set up for tapping, so it is geared down and spins slower. The other three heads have power feed and the speed is decent, I think it is 400 to 2800 RPM for those. The powermatic spins 4400 so it is a very nice setup, (that I have never used).

That was the update, I just found out that I am still a few more weeks out. Doc says four to six more weeks. I am sure I will be able to do something before that, but he cautioned me that if I don't give it time to heal, it will be as bad as having done nothing. I am going to listen to him, I don't want to be plagued with issues forever. I will update when I have something useful to post.

Good plan on following the Doc's orders. My grandfather ignored some advice the doctor gave him for an ankle issues when he was in his 30s or early 40s, and that ankle has been giving him hell for 50-60 years now (he is 97). 60 years of pain because he couldn't take a few weeks off. Not a good rate of return on that one!!

I will be in the shop, but I will not be doing the work. I am going to have to hire someone to help me get stuff over to the auction in a few weeks. I kind of wish I had done the surgery back around Christmas, but I was not sure how much snow we would get, in the end I could have easily done it since we got very little snow. And that is why we say hindsight is 20/20.

Sounds like a good plan, rest now so that you will be a good shape to do more later.

Are you doing any physical therapy?

They gave me some very basic exercises, they are more designed at stretching things so the tissue doesn't scar up. That is about it, he said see you in four weeks.

Hey Strouty what was your out-the-door price on that green workstation cart? I am thinking of getting one in red.

I am watching one of those hoarding shows, I think I see my future and I am a bit nervous. I want out, sooner rather than later. If it gets too bad I don't know how I can ever get out of the mess! I hate getting rid of tools, but I think I need to start, then I have to get rid of hardware. I hope next week I have more use of my arm, I NEED to get moving.

Spending so much time organizing things that really don't matter has been the story of my life, I know I am using it to cover up other things. It is easy to say this, but difficult to actually do something about it. My grandfather was the same way, my Father is probably worse than my Grandfather, so I know where I got my habits from.

Things that were important to me a few years ago seem stupid and very unimportant now. I know I need to concentrate on my health, both mental and physical. I look at all the stuff and I can tell you all the plans I had for it, now it is like I wasted all my efforts on storing things, like getting rid of it is giving up.

I hate having too much time to think, now I have four more weeks of it.

Stop and breath. You are your own worst enemy. You really need to stop beating yourself up. You are "smarter than the average bear" there booboo.

Strouty,
Getting rid of the things that you stored and come to realize you don't need, is not giving up. At least you reconize this and are planning on moving forward when you are able. I kind of resemble in some ways, I'm to the point where I'm getting rid of more and more, still storing some stuff that is worthwhile. I Can pretty easily make a decision to load up for the auction, sometimes it's giving away, sometimes it suprises me what it sold for. The best part is I don't miss it and use the space for something current.

One thing I've learned to do in the past few years is to get rid of stuff and focus on other stuff that I'm going to enjoy and be useful.

CB, it is tough not to feel that way. Seems like I invested years of effort, physically, mentally, and financially. It is absolutely a life altering experience, I think when I am busy it is just easier to deal with it. As DLC says, I am my worst enemy, not sure how to combat an enemy that knows me so well. I am not really sure what Nines said.

I am not really sure what Nines said.

Ah, the blissfulness of it all.:lol_hitti
Just go out in the shop and get lost.

I hear you on the years of building up and the planning, mainley in your ( mine too)head. Time changes a lot, that's for sure.
I think I can safely speak for a lot of us here, nothing to feel bad about, just adapt for what makes you happy and go on. Can't let the money control everything, I know I get stuck on that quite often, I realize its diffrent for your as you have your business factored in all this where I dont.
But you nailed it earlier, we all got to take care of our health or we have nothing, then we are just going to end up another building at a estate sale.

The worst part of all these feelings is that the shop and the exterior areas are probably the cleanest they have been in years. It is still overwhelming.

Since I layed off all my employees at the first of the year my son and I are cleaning up the shop and yard. It is amazing what we have found stashed away. Sent 23K pounds to the scrap yard yesterday and started filling another bin. I have a pile of scrap wood and pallets that would keep three families warm for a winter. I like that we are getting it under control and making more room for our shed sales but it makes me angry that it got that way. Then I remember why I got rid of the employees.

I think it is good that you are still feeling like you have too much stuff two years into this process. You do. Sounds pretty mean, eh? Naw, I just want you to continue to purge weird things like crash test dummies or whatever the hell that thing is. Sell it.

Want a kick in the ***? Get off your **** and go to the shop and sort hardware into your thousands of dollars of storage you bought. You don't need two arms to sit on a stool, relax and sort.

Every emotion that you are having, in the above post, is common to people who are dealing with hoarding tendencies.

Your feelings of loss are standard.

Your confusion about how much stuff, is the right amount to have, is also classic.

We just have to deal with these things. I have had to go through the same difficulties.

I have felt loss at almost everything I have had to toss because it was ruined or I didn't have a place for it or a use for it or even if I didn't like it in the first place. I felt a loss because I spent money on it. Or because I had to move it so many times before discarding it. Or because I didn't have the time to recoup money by selling it. I gave away my CB1000 motorcycle in exchange for $200 worth of labor and the guy disappeared. I feel the loss from that all the time. I carry all those losses around with me every day.

How much stuff to have?

I've had people on this forum tell me to get rid of everything. EVERYTHING! And that from tool hoarders themselves. Ridiculous. But I do have more than will fit in the available spaces, and the things all be usable. So I must tailor the stuff to the spaces. And they must be work spaces, not storage sheds. My mental gauge, of what is reasonable went haywire long ago, so I have to develop a new one. You will have to develop your own.

Take a pencil and a piece of paper and write down your life goals for the next 5, 10, 20 and 50 years. Then work it backwards. What do you have to do to reach each milestone? What physical, financial and time resources will be required fr each goal? It's like doing a project management timeline.

Certain things won't line up and won't be possible. This gets worse as you get older, and you have to let these things go, in order to focus on the things that CAN be accomplished.

This is a better train of thought than you may think.

Instead of considering these let go of items as being losses, consider them to be clearing the decks of clutter, so you can more easily get at the things you REALLY want to do. While you clear your life of physical clutter, you are clearing your mind of the burden of all these divergent and dead end paths.

You are freeing and focusing yourself. And you give yourself the chance to accomplish things.

Do you want to be a warehouse manager all the rest of your life?

I am in your same exact boat. You wouldn't believe the list of hopes and dreams I've discarded, or how much more particular I am becoming with what I will give myself to.

My goals are becoming clearer, and closer, the more I give up.

I haven't read your whole thread, so I don't know if you have ever stated your ultimate goals.

Doing so, make it real, and easier to slough off the drek, both physical and mental.

The Buddhists talk about living in the moment, but even more importantly, they talk about purposeful living. To me, this is about daily thinking about what is what. I'm not good at it yet. There are long periods of mental wandering, unconscious and as my mother used to say "head up and locked".

It's a way of avoiding facing things.

Our time is finite.

Our money is finite.

Our health is finite.

What will you spend these most valuable resources on?

Facing things means we have to look at the past, but attach no continuing blame to yourself from it. Simply learn from it and carry on, more able and knowledgeable.

Facing things means you have to make choices. Painful, but necessary. What it gives you is power and freedom. Power to take charge of your life. And the freedom from being a slave to the things you no longer value.

I'm at a point, where I am taking many many things out of the garage/shop and house. Useful things. Expensive things. But things that prevent me from doing what I really want to do.

Am I clearing it all out?

NO! But I am going to be getting rid of things I never thought would go. They must, to make room for things I need, to do what I want.

Am I going to be buying more things?

Yes! Particular things, planned for in advance. Things I need in order to make other things work, and so I can do what I want.

Don't give up now. You are doing well.

But keep reevaluating and adjusting, based on your more and more clearly focused goals.

You will get there.

But surprisingly the destination isn't a particularly cleared and cleaned and organized garage.

The destination is a mind, working on a daily basis, to read and adjust to your changing and emerging desires and needs.

The elbow is getting to the point that I will be able to get over to the shop more often, the problem is trying to rain myself in. I want to do too much, I want to do more, I don't want to stop. That is all great, but not right now. The **** that is going on in my personal life is so unknown that right now I can't bring myself to have any goals. I am just trying to keep myself alive. My GF has told me that I have to think of things like an undiagnosed illness of sorts, you don't know what is going on, or how things are going to turn out. I am used to being in control and right now I have had my life turned upside down in almost every way, it is not a comfortable feeling having every aspect of my future out of my control. There are lots more things going on than I care to discuss, no offense to any of you guys, things are just too personal right now.
