Sortimo insert compatibility

Hi all - Long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm looking at revamping my small-parts storage system - or rather, standardizing on a system in the first place! I want to bring order to the current chaotic mix of plastic drawers, bins, boxes, and bags. I plan to move as much of the small-parts inventory as possible to a set of those storage organizers with interchangeable plastic compartments of various sizes.

I've read all the threads and reviews I can find, but I'm still working on choosing which bins to buy. Obviously if I had Mythbuster-level money I'd make like Adam Savage and buy a hundred Sortimo cases, but that's not currently a realistic option!

However, the one thing I really do like about the Sortimo inserts is that they seem to be available in more shapes and sizes than almost any other manufacturer. In particular, they have some long narrow bins (the orange ones) that seem perfect for holding small quantities of fairly long bolts, which as it happens is a requirement for my shop. Most of the other storage case types would require me to use a more squarish insert to accommodate just a handful of long bolts, which would be less space-efficient.

So here's my question: Has anyone got any firsthand knowledge of any non-Sortimo organizer boxes that can accept the Sortimo plastic inserts? What I'm hoping to find is a more affordable Sortimo alternative with which I can use a few of the Sortimo inserts just for specific unusual sizes.

I think the answer is "yes" for the Bosch i-BOXX, since the Bosch inserts are literally made by Sortimo. The Bosch-branded boxes are a little cheaper than the Sortimo equivalent, but still somewhat pricey.

And I think the answer is "no" for the Allit boxes sold by Lee Valley and others, at least according to a thread I found. (can't post a link due to my post count here, but searching for "sortimo inserts allit" will find it on bethepro dot com.

Anyone know of any other combinations that might be compatible? I may end up ordering a handful of inserts and boxes just to do some test-fitting. Given the quantity I hope to wind up with, it might be worth the cost to do the experiment if it means I can find a cheaper non-Sortimo alternative.

Thanks!

You'll be lucky if you find any that fit perfectly, as all the ones I have had seem to be slightly different but I believe the Sortimo sizes are somewhat of a standard, the Sortimo ones are bigger but shallower than the Festool, so those two are not compatible, but the Sortimo ones seem to be the same size (or close to) as the generic metal screw assortment boxes that are common here in the UK, which are the same size as the boxes from the British company Sortacase (http://www.sortacase.com/steel-cases-for-screws---components.html) who have been selling these in the UK for as long as I can remember (my dad had some when I was a kid).
The standard Sortimo insert as used in the L boxx is a 54mm square by 63mm depth module.

Thanks, that's helpful.

Honestly the Sorta-Case products look like they would be ideal for my purposes, being quite Sortimo-like but significantly more affordable. But try as I might, I haven't found a way for someone in the US to purchase them. I even went to the extent of emailing the manufacturer (pleasant folks, by the way) to confirm that they don't currently have a North American distributor.

I recently made a big push to organize my stuff (more electronics-related stuff than anything) and stumbled upon this:

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2836113

Where you can 3d print a variety of useful bins that aren't sold for the HF style organizers.

So I went with HF organizers and bought a 3D printer for $300.

I figure the price of the 3d printer was comparable to my savings with getting cheap organizers vs. expensive ones, and as a bonus I have a 3d printer to play with.

I also found these parts cups that are DIRT CHEAP. Would be useful for something like stacking a toolbox drawer with parts, or use them as they're intended: in large quantum shelf bins.

Not sure what your budget is for the cases but it’s possible to get Sortimo T-boxxes including an assortment of Insetboxxes in the €45 range delivered. At certain points even the Amazon.de pricing has been in the 40s. I realize that’s still significantly higher than the HF cases, but if this sounds remotely reasonable I’d encourage you to reach out to some of the German E-bay folks to see what they’re willing to do.

Thanks - I have toyed with doing the same thing, but it seems like I already have too many hobbies and I shudder to think what kind of mischief I would get up to if I had a 3D printer! :)

Good tip on the open bins, I've filed away that link for future use.

If you know a source for T-Boxxes at that price, I'd love to know it! For the quantities I'm thinking about, the ~$12 savings per box (at today's exchange rates) over their US pricing would save me a bundle, given the quantities I have in mind. Thanks!

Sortimo has some sale on their US web store right now:
http://www.sortimo-shop.us/category-s/110.htm

Maybe check that.

I'm a huge Sortimo fan too and have many T- Boxxes. The good thing about the T- Boxx and the inset boxes is that they lock in place in the lid of the case. Screws and other small parts can't get mixed up, even during transport. If you use the insets in a non-Sortimo case, this will not be the case.

It's definitly worth to buy one to try it!

Thanks - I got excited when I saw that they were having a sale (T-Boxxes marked down from $64 to $52) but it became less of a good deal once I filled up the shopping cart and got a shipping quote. Twenty T-Boxxes with various-colored inserts results in an eye-watering $247 shipping quote, for a total bill of $1286.

By contrast, if I add the same twenty boxes to my Amazon shopping cart at the regular price of $64 each, Amazon shows me a shipping cost of $99 for a total price of $1379. If I use my Amazon credit card I get 5% back, which makes my net cost $1313.

So ordering direct from the US Sortimo distributor is still cheaper while they have their sale in effect, but Amazon must certainly be the better choice if you're paying full price. I have no idea why the shipping rates would be so different between the two websites, considering that Sortimo products ordered from Amazon are drop-shipped from Sortimo anyway.

(Those who have already been through this process will probably recognize that my subconscious has already decided to buy the Sortimo boxes and is just waiting for my rational mind to convince itself it's a good idea. Getting there...)

I've found this person to be a pleasure to deal with. His t-boxxes are not branded, but are made by Sortimo and identical to the branded versions. He may be able to work with you to put together a package that includes Insetboxxes as he sells those as well. While the price is a major selling point for Werkzeugwelten, I also really like the all black t-boxx over the standard colors.

As an aside, Sortimo US has been great to work with in the past as well. I've purchased many of my Insetboxxes, inluding the half-height ones from them. They're located near Atlanta and do local pickup. If you don't see something on the site they can check to see if they can get it and send you a personalized link to purchase.

It's probably a standard web caluculator which calculates according to your location. Might be worth it to call their customer service to let them check the rate...

I know the process... Usually you end up buying it anyway :D

OP, were they pretty quick to ship your order? Just curious, I ordered on Sunday and have not received any communication from them, not even a confirmation of order.

Ordered on the 30th, got the shipping notification email on the 31st, and received my order on the 7th.

I should probably also mention that the way I resolved the discrepancy in shipping cost between Amazon and direct-from-distributor was to call their office in Georgia and harangue them about it. :) They agreed to fix up the shipping cost on my order to match the Amazon price, so I was able to get the more favorable shipping rate while still being able to take advantage of the sale.

Thanks, I just ordered 3 boxes to try them out, so shipping wasn't too bad. Plus, I'm closer to their warehouse than you are.....
